Release list
Snipdeck 0.3.0 (beta)
Beta. This is a beta release. The Linux desktops were tested by hand in virtual machines and the Windows build under Wine, not on a real Windows machine — see Where it was tested below. Please report anything that goes wrong in Issues.
Snipdeck 0.3.0 is the first release built for Linux as much as for Windows: packages for the major distributions, and snips that stay on top on GNOME, KDE Plasma and X11 desktops.

The Linux build needs glibc 2.30 or later: Debian 11, Ubuntu 20.04, RHEL 9 and everything newer.
What's new
Linux
- Packages (.deb, .rpm) alongside the tarball, built on Debian 11 so one binary runs on every current distribution.
- GNOME: a shell extension places snips where they were captured, keeps them above other windows, keeps them out of the overview and the dock, and adds
Super+Alt+drag capture. GNOME Shell 45–51. - KDE Plasma: a KWin script keeps snips on top, places them, puts them on every desktop and keeps them out of the taskbar. No new login needed.
- Snipdeck turns on the extension or the script itself at its first start; if you turn it off, it stays off.
- X11 (Xfce, MATE, Cinnamon, GNOME on Xorg): snips stay on top and out of the taskbar.
- sway, Hyprland: capture, OCR and the tray work. Snips float but open where the compositor puts them. On sway, bind a key to
snipdeck --action snip; on Hyprland, bind the shortcuts it lists (hyprctl globalshortcuts). - Wayland capture goes through the ScreenCast portal and PipeWire.
- Global shortcuts go through the desktop portal. They work when Snipdeck is started from a terminal as well (xdg-desktop-portal 1.19+). The application id is now
com.revisetouch.Snipdeck. - Starts in the tray when launched at login.
Everywhere
- A redesigned, quieter main window: one toolbar row.
- Your own image host: import a ShareX
.sxcuuploader, choose it under Upload to. Every upload asks first, in Snipdeck's own window. - Snips are stored as lossless WebP; existing PNGs are converted.
- The interface in 23 languages, the README in 10.
- Privacy: OCR + Translate asks before sending text to Google; no snips left in the shared
/tmp; no pointer traces or window titles in logs. - About 90 fixes: capture, the gallery, the annotation and collage editors, multi-monitor and DPI handling on Windows, the clipboard, settings that no longer reset.
Where it was tested
Each Linux desktop was tested by hand in a virtual machine from the distribution's own live image: install the package, launch from the menu, global shortcut, region capture, the tray, keep-on-top.
| Desktop | Distribution | Install | Shortcuts | Capture | Kept on top |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GNOME 50, Wayland | Ubuntu 26.04 | .deb ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ (extension, after a new login) |
| GNOME 46, X11 | Ubuntu 24.04 | .deb ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | fixed in this release; the fix was checked on Xfce |
| KDE Plasma 6.6, Wayland | Fedora 44 KDE | .rpm ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ (KWin script) |
| Xfce, X11 | Fedora 44 Xfce | .rpm ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| sway, Wayland | Fedora 44 Sway | .rpm ✅ | via --action |
✅ | floats, not placed |
| Hyprland 0.56, Wayland | Arch | tarball ✅ | via config | ✅ | floats, not placed |
The packages were also installed in containers on Debian 12 and 13, Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, Fedora, Rocky Linux 9, openSUSE Leap 15.6, openSUSE Tumbleweed and Arch: every dependency resolved, and the binary started.
Windows: run under Wine, where the gallery, the global hotkeys, the tray, the snip menu, the collage editor and the upload window were checked. Screen capture (DXGI), OCR (Windows.Media.Ocr), Win+drag, the share sheet and mixed-DPI monitors cannot be tested under Wine and were not tested on a real Windows machine for this release.
Known limits
- On sway and Hyprland a snip opens where the compositor puts it, not over the captured region; on Hyprland it may also open larger than the region.
- On GNOME, an extension installed by a package loads at the next login.
- There is no modifier+drag capture outside GNOME: it would need a system-wide input hook.
v0.2.0
Snipdeck v0.2.0 Highlights since v0.1.0: - Sleeping event pump: the tray-resident process now truly sleeps when idle instead of waking 125x/s, so it stops holding the CPU out of its deep sleep states. - Eyedropper / colour picker with a magnifying loupe. - Collage editor: combine snips into grid, rows or masonry layouts. - Black snips fixed: empty DXGI frames are skipped and HDR displays are handled, on Windows 10 and 11 alike. - Turkish-aware search: the FTS index and the query fold diacritics the same way, so a query typed without them still matches. - Win-key disguise unified on the native hook. - Floating snips no longer leave a stray taskbar button. - Turkish UI translation. - Groundwork for Linux/Wayland: overlay-driven selection and a tesseract OCR backend. NOT yet tested on a real Linux machine - Windows x64 is the only published binary.
