Release list
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha21
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha21
This preview makes ordinary typing calmer while keeping Utterleaf's editing,
terminal, navigation and offline-voice tools available on demand.
What changed
- The ordinary keyboard now uses one compact daily row: Tools, Edit,
three stable suggestion positions and Dictate. Secondary editing actions,
Emoji, Private Draft and specialist controls appear only when requested. - The bottom row is continuous: ?123, comma, Space, period and the field's
dynamic action key. The unused bottom-left gap is gone. - Tools keeps editing, navigation, symbols, Compose, alternate letter layouts,
the optional number row, Extra Keys, modifiers, Fn keys and terminal controls
available without making them permanent keyboard chrome. - Suggestion completion checks the editor's live selection immediately before
replacing text. A delayed Android selection callback can no longer make a
completion overwrite selected text. - Portrait and landscape preserve the single daily row. Split landscape retains
only its intentional center channel; ordinary and one-hand layouts have no
inert bottom-row slot.
The layout was designed independently after clean-room study of familiar Android
keyboard interaction patterns. No FUTO code, assets, labels, constants or theme
values were copied.
No new permission, dependency, network access, telemetry, ambient recording,
clipboard inspection, typing history or model-loading path is introduced.
Install and updates
Use Utterleaf-Android-0.1.0-alpha21.apk, version code 21. The package remains
org.utterleaf.voice with the persistent alpha03-and-later signing identity.
Update a signed alpha20 or earlier preview in place; do not uninstall first.
Alpha01/02 used different debug signers and require a one-time reinstall that
removes their app data. The experimental foundation package is a separate channel.
The release includes SHA-256 checksums, signing-certificate information, and
version metadata. Use the signed APK, not an unsigned or CI debug build.
Verification and limits
Android 8+ ARM64/x86_64 development preview. Exact-candidate Android CI and the
protected signing/install/upgrade checks are required before publication. Emulator
coverage exercises daily/sensitive geometry, editing and selection safety; the
broader alpha20 privacy, lifecycle, terminal, voice and settings behavior remains.
Emulator success does not establish physical-phone comfort. Pixel 8 Pro/GrapheneOS,
broader editor, TalkBack/Switch Access, phone layout/latency, and real Obtainium
acceptance remain explicit follow-up work.
The daily row, continuous bottom row, split channel and Tools disclosure are
covered on the visible API 35 emulator. Physical-phone reach and comfort remain
unverified.
No automatic correction, next-word prediction, swipe typing, streaming partial
dictation, or language expansion is added. Typing needs no model or microphone
permission. Dictation remains explicit and unavailable in password fields.
Screenshot protection remains enabled.
Changing fields still cancels/clears dictation rather than carrying a transcript
to another target. Recoverable stale-result delivery and the replacement Tools
composition remain planned. Standalone voice landscape/large-font reachability,
extreme narrow/large-text Settings header wrapping, and the final accessibility
audit remain open; passing emulator bounds checks is not full usability evidence.
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha20
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha20
- Long Backspace drags now wait for the editor's final selection confirmation,
so releasing at the first character deletes the complete preview even in
slower host editors. - Tapping a word completion adds the expected typing space without doubling an
existing space or inserting one before punctuation. - Dictation now presents one clear action for each state: Stop & transcribe,
Insert text, Fix transcript, Done editing, or Retake. Model and optional
hold-to-insert controls stay collapsed under Voice options. - Setup is now a readiness dashboard: the two steps required for typing are
prominent, privacy guarantees stay visible, and optional offline voice details
expand only when requested.
This preview polishes the daily keyboard, makes editing easier to reach, adds
dark appearance choices, hardens editor/privacy boundaries, and shortens routine
Android CI feedback. It is a bounded development preview, not completion of the
full A–M keyboard redesign.
What changed
- Editor capabilities and the action key now use one metadata policy. Password
fields use a minimal literal-input surface: no suggestions, dictation, draft,
Tools or surrounding-text inspection. Explicit Paste remains a host action;
the keyboard does not inspect clipboard contents. - Field changes and panel detach/reuse clear transient Tools, modifiers,
alternates and pending gestures. Limited/throwing editors fail locally without
replaying ambiguous editing actions. Lifecycle tests cover owned cross-app
transitions and actual IME-process recovery, not every third-party editor. - Model readiness and native loading require checksum verification tied to the
installed file. Import progress and failures survive Activity recreation while
preserving the previous verified model. This does not claim process-death
continuation of an import. - Models use Compact English, Medium English and Large English names
with download sizes and relative resource use. Technical identifiers, filenames
and checksums are available under Show technical model details. Existing
imports keep their identities; names do not promise accuracy or phone speed. - Settings show Customized for values that differ from defaults. Individual
and category resets remain staged until Apply; Cancel discards them without
changing unrelated preferences or deleting installed models. - Email and URL fields suppress prose suggestions. Private-draft navigation and
deletion respect combining characters and joined emoji, including a caret
inside a cluster. - The stable daily strip keeps Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Select, Tools,
Edit, Emoji, Private Draft, Voice, and Extra Keys directly
reachable. It uses two rows in portrait and one in landscape. - Select now follows the documented gesture contract: tap selects the neighboring
word and long-press selects all. Restricted actions remain visibly unavailable
or absent in password, raw, and private fields. - Settings, setup, keyboard, emoji, private draft, and voice surfaces share the
selected palette. Appearance now offers System, Light, Dark, and
true-black OLED modes. - A normal mic tap preserves the review-and-correct flow before Insert.
Hold mic to insert after recognition remains an explicit opt-in shortcut. - Each dictation take permits only one direct insertion attempt. If the editor
reports an uncertain result, Insert stays unavailable even after editing; the
transcript remains selectable for explicit Copy, with a warning to check the
receiving field. This avoids accidentally duplicating text after a host failure. - The mic action now uses an Utterling holding a microphone. The Voice surface
pairs distinct Utterling states with explicit Listening, Processing
locally, Transcript ready, Editing transcript, and Needs attention
labels; controls and text remain authoritative for accessibility. - Protected drafts omit voice, password-manager routes, host settings, keyboard
switching, and preference toggles. Opening Extra keys no longer changes its
saved preference. - Extra Keys is now a single grouped, horizontally scrollable Accessory/F-key
strip. Portrait retains the daily toolbar above it; landscape uses the same
row as a compact specialist header so Space and Enter remain full-sized in
full and one-hand layouts. Held modifier-arrow chords remain supported. - The complete additional-symbol inventory is distributed across balanced rows
instead of squeezing the final set into one line. - Layout & size now offers Split keyboard in landscape. It preserves the
complete typing and symbol inventory around a non-clickable center channel,
divides Space into two equivalent thumb targets, and automatically uses the
standard layout in portrait. Left/Right hand choices turn split off. - Superseded pull-request runs cancel automatically. Pull requests perform the
fast compile, unit-test, lint, and debug-build path; the full emulator,
privacy/inference, release build, and packaging gates still run on the exact
main/manual release candidate.
No new permissions, dependencies, ambient recording, text history, clipboard
automation, or network access are added. Live partial transcription into the
receiving editor is intentionally deferred: rewriting host text while speech is
still changing needs a separate editor-compatibility and privacy design.
Install and updates
Use Utterleaf-Android-0.1.0-alpha20.apk, version code 20. The package remains
org.utterleaf.voice with the persistent alpha03-and-later signing identity.
Update a signed alpha19 or earlier preview in place; do not uninstall first.
Emulator
coverage exercises appearance persistence, OLED black backgrounds, daily layers,
private-mode isolation, editing, terminal controls, voice review, and settings.
Emulator success does not establish physical-phone comfort. Pixel 8 Pro/GrapheneOS,
broader editor, TalkBack/Switch Access, phone layout/latency, and real Obtainium
acceptance remain explicit follow-up work.
Split, responsive symbols, and Extra Keys landscape geometry are covered on the
visible API 35 emulator. Physical-phone reach and comfort remain unverified.
No automatic correction, next-word prediction, swipe typing, streaming partial
dictation, or language expansion is added. Typing needs no model or microphone
permission. Dictation remains explicit and unavailable in password fields.
Screenshot protection remains enabled.
Changing fields still cancels/clears dictation rather than carrying a transcript
to another target. Recoverable stale-result delivery and the replacement Tools
composition remain planned. Standalone voice landscape/large-font reachability,
extreme narrow/large-text Settings header wrapping, and the final accessibility
audit remain open; passing emulator bounds checks is not full usability evidence.
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha19
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha19
This preview fixes Backspace interactions and improves keyboard navigation and Settings discovery.
What changed
-
Hold Emoji to open full Settings directly; tap still opens Emoji. A visible
Tools button opens Compose, accents and quick options, even with Extra keys off. -
Settings search finds controls such as Backspace, vibration, height and theme.
Backspace repeat and repeat guard now live under Holds & gestures. -
Redrawn Cut scissors and corrected the light-theme Dictate button contrast.
-
Holding Backspace keeps deleting after automatic capitalization or ordinary
letter-case Shift. Capitalization no longer turns Backspace into a single
modified delete or changes its backward direction. -
You can start holding Backspace and then slide left to select more text.
Repeat stops before selection begins. Release deletes the highlighted range
once; sliding back shrinks it. Text already removed by the hold stays removed. -
Cancelling, reversing to the origin or an editor refusing the swipe does not
restart repeat or produce an extra Backspace tap. Password/raw fields and
Extra keys retain their restrictions; explicit modifier behavior is preserved.
Held repeat remains controlled by Hold Backspace or Delete to repeat and
Ignore repeated taps on the same key within 250 ms. Swipe selection depends on the editor confirming native
selection movement. It is refused in password/raw fields and with Extra keys open.
Alpha18's typing/suggestion stability fixes and staged Settings remain included.
No new permissions, dependencies, recording, text history or network access.
Install and updates
Use Utterleaf-Android-0.1.0-alpha19.apk, version code 19. The package remains
org.utterleaf.voice with the persistent alpha03-and-later signing identity.
Update a signed alpha18 or earlier preview in place; do not uninstall first.
Alpha01/02 used different debug signers and require a one-time reinstall that
removes their app data. The experimental foundation package is a separate channel.
The release includes SHA-256 checksums, signing-certificate information and version
metadata. Use the signed APK, not an unsigned or CI debug build.
Verification and limits
Android 8+ ARM64/x86_64 development preview. Exact-candidate Android CI and the
protected signing/install/upgrade checks are required before publication. Regression
coverage includes sustained hold, late swipe, cancellation/refusal/reversal,
capitalization, editor-confirmed deletion, modifiers and repeat preferences.
Pixel 8 Pro/GrapheneOS confirmation of the reported gesture remains open, as do
broader editor, TalkBack/Switch Access, phone layout/latency and real Obtainium
acceptance. Emulator success does not establish physical-phone comfort.
No automatic correction, next-word prediction, swipe typing or language expansion
is added. Typing needs no model or microphone permission. Dictation remains explicit
and unavailable in password fields. Screenshot protection remains enabled.
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha18
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha18
This preview focuses on dependable everyday typing and predictable customization.
It includes the alpha17 typing/suggestion stabilization and a settings usability
pass. Alpha17's layouts, local emoji, Compose, private drafts, extra keys and
password-field-only password-manager shortcut remain available.
What changed
- Typing stays independent of suggestions. Dictionary loading and bounded
suggestion reads run off the typing path. Completions refresh after cursor
changes and verify the exact word and session before replacing it. Stale or
selected text is rejected. Ordinary touches avoid redundant modifier updates. - Stable suggestion geometry. Empty and populated completion states keep the
same row height, so the letters do not jump as you type. Insets and explicit
bottom spacing have separate regression coverage. - Settings that honor Apply and Cancel. Voice options, preview quick controls
and confirmed resets now stay staged with the other preferences. Apply saves;
Cancel discards. Reset never deletes models or other user data. - Controls before the preview. Apply stays at the top while categories scroll.
Theme, alignment and letter-layout selections immediately refresh the practice
keyboard, including when returning to the original choice. - Consistent navigation. Back returns from a category to the settings list;
search text and results remain in sync. Rotation retains pending preferences in
memory, while private practice input is cleared. Replaced preview panels are
disposed so their old controls cannot insert text or save preferences.
Install and updates
Use Utterleaf-Android-0.1.0-alpha18.apk, version code 18. The package remains
org.utterleaf.voice with the persistent alpha03-and-later signing identity.
Update an existing signed preview in place; do not uninstall first. Alpha01/02
used different debug signers and require a one-time reinstall that removes their
app data. The experimental foundation package is a separate channel.
The release includes SHA-256 checksums, signing-certificate information and version
metadata. Do not substitute an unsigned or CI debug APK for a signed update.
Verification and limits
Android 8+ ARM64/x86_64 development preview. The release workflow requires
successful exact-revision CI, package/version/certificate checks and signed
install/upgrade/reinstall checks. Focused emulator tests cover staged voice/reset,
preview controls, reversible choices, rotation, navigation and model preservation.
Settings views are reviewed at default, narrow/large-text and landscape emulator
sizes. These checks do not establish physical-phone comfort or latency.
Pixel 8 Pro/GrapheneOS, broad external editors, TalkBack/Switch Access, sustained
landscape use and real Obtainium updates remain open acceptance gates. An editor
that blocks a suggestion read can delay later suggestions until that read returns;
ordinary typing remains independent. Tapping a suggestion still re-verifies the
word through the editor and can wait for a slow editor response.
The public-domain English completion list under-represents modern vocabulary.
No automatic correction, next-word prediction, swipe or broader language support
is added. No Internet permission, typing history, passive learning, clipboard
monitoring or ambient recording is added. Typing needs no model or microphone
permission. Dictation requires an explicit action and is disabled in password
fields. Keyboard screenshot protection remains enabled.
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha17
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha17
This experimental preview rebuilds the everyday keyboard to the approved design:
an icon toolbar with a fold-out Extra keys panel, a hinted number row, a
redesigned Settings screen, a password-manager shortcut restricted to password
fields, and a suggestion strip that completes the word you are typing.
What changed
- The approved daily redesign. The letter keyboard gains an icon toolbar
(undo, redo, copy, cut, paste, private draft, dictate and an expand chevron)
with editing actions one tap away instead of stacked text buttons. The
chevron opens the Extra keys panel — Esc, Tab, Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Home,
End, Ins, Del, PgUp, PgDn and the arrow keys — above the letters, with
F1–F12 behind Fn. The old permanent Terminal row and the Tools/Edit
button strips are superseded; all previous routes keep tap-accessible
equivalents (Caps lock is a long-press on Shift, keyboard tools and settings
are a hold on the emoji key). - Hinted number row on by default, with the digit hints you hold to type.
Letter hints show symbols while the number row is visible and digits when it
is hidden, so hold-to-insert stays complete. Hints sit where the design puts
them and remain optional in Settings. - The mockup bottom row:
?123, an emoji key (hold it for keyboard tools
and settings), a space labeled with the active language such as
"English (US)", period, and a rounded Enter pill that follows the editor's
action. The comma key moves to the period key's slide menu and the symbols
page. - Redesigned Settings: a searchable category list (Layout & size,
Navigation & terminal, Typing assistance, Holds & gestures, Appearance,
Voice input, Privacy & data) with staged edits — Apply saves and
Cancel discards — plus a practice message with a live keyboard preview.
New options include fold-out extra keys, auto-capitalization, arrow repeat,
key borders and a System/Light/Dark theme. Reset preferences restores the
new defaults and never deletes models. - Password-manager shortcut, password fields only. A keyring button
appears in the toolbar on explicit password fields and opens your configured
autofill application. It is never shown on ordinary text, email or number
fields; the keyboard sends nothing to the target application, and the key
does not exist when no autofill application is configured. - Suggestion strip. While you type, up to three completions of the current
word appear below the toolbar, drawn from a frequency-ordered English list
derived solely from public-domain Project Gutenberg texts. Tapping a
suggestion completes only the word being typed — nothing is auto-corrected,
learned or sent. The strip is off on password and terminal fields, has an
on/off switch under Typing assistance, and adds no permissions.
Alpha16's All Actions behavior, latched Ctrl/Alt, complete US punctuation,
Backspace selection gesture, private drafts, local emoji, Latin composition,
QWERTY/QWERTZ/AZERTY layouts, one-hand alignment and long-press hint insertion
remain included. The keyboard engine is Utterleaf's own implementation.
Existing preferences migrate once to the new defaults; your explicit choices
are kept from then on.
Install and updates
Use Utterleaf-Android-0.1.0-alpha17.apk, version code 17. The package remains
org.utterleaf.voice and retains the persistent alpha03-and-later signing
identity. Update an existing signed preview in place; do not uninstall first.
The display name does not create a second app or a new settings store.
Alpha01/alpha02 used disposable debug signers and require a one-time reinstall,
which removes their app data.
The release includes SHA-256 checksums, public signing-certificate information
and version metadata. The separate experimental foundation package is not this
update channel. Never substitute an unsigned or CI debug APK for a signed update.
Verification and limits
This is an Android 8+ ARM64/x86_64 development preview, with English typing layouts
and reviewed English offline speech models. Automated checks cover the new
toolbar, panel and strip behavior, the restricted-field gates, native editor,
gesture, privacy and layout contracts. The signing workflow requires successful
exact-revision Android CI, package/version/certificate checks and signed
install/upgrade/reinstall checks before publication.
Physical-phone testing is deferred to follow-up user feedback. TalkBack, Switch
Access, landscape, broad editor behavior and real Obtainium updates remain
unverified. The suggestion list is drawn from classical prose and
under-represents some modern vocabulary; expandable local word lists are
planned. Suggestions complete words but never replace them: auto-correction,
next-word prediction, swipe typing and broader language support are not
included in this snapshot.
Typing needs no model or microphone permission. Dictation starts only by an
explicit action and is disabled in password fields. The password-manager key
launches your configured autofill application and sends it nothing. No Internet
permission, ambient recording, typing history, clipboard monitoring or saved
audio history is added. Explicit Copy/Cut/Paste still use the receiving editor's
clipboard commands. Keyboard screenshot protection remains enabled.
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha16
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha16
This experimental preview replaces the long Tools strip with everyday actions
that stay in reach, and makes Terminal modifiers stay on until you turn them off.
What changed
- All Actions instead of a sliding Tools strip. Tools opens a bounded
replacement layer for Edit, Emoji, drafts, accents, composition, layout,
settings and keyboard switching. ABC returns to typing. No extra rows stack
above the letters. - Spatial Edit pad. Undo, Redo, Select all and forward Delete sit on the
top row. Cut, Copy and Paste sit beside a directional pad. Tap Select to
select the neighboring word through the editor's Ctrl+Shift+Left equivalent;
hold Select for Select all. The existing Select all action remains on the
same layer. - Terminal arrows stay beside the letters. Esc, Tab, Ctrl, Alt, Nav and Fn
use a shorter accessory row. F1–F12 remain behind Fn. Enabling Terminal from
All Actions shows the accessory keys immediately. - Latched Ctrl and Alt. Tap a modifier to keep it selected until you tap it
again. Hold-chords still apply only while the finger is down. Shift stays
selected for arrows and terminal keys, so Ctrl+Shift+Left can keep extending
a word selection. Letter and digit Shift remain one-shot. Field and layer
changes still clear local modifiers. - Complete US punctuation on the two symbol pages, including brackets,
braces, backtick, pipe and the usual paired marks.
Alpha15's compact Utterleaf names, Backspace selection gesture, comma-hold
Settings, two-thumb rollover, QWERTY/QWERTZ/AZERTY layouts, one-hand alignment,
local emoji, Latin composition, private drafts and visible long-press hints
remain included. The keyboard engine is Utterleaf's own implementation.
Install and updates
Use Utterleaf-Android-0.1.0-alpha16.apk, version code 16.
Automated checks cover native editor,
gesture, privacy and layout behavior. The signing workflow requires successful
exact-revision Android CI, package/version/certificate checks and signed
install/upgrade/reinstall checks before publication.
Physical-phone testing is deferred to follow-up user feedback. TalkBack, Switch
Access, landscape, broad editor behavior and real Obtainium updates remain
unverified. Emulator and owned-view renders do not establish typing comfort or
assistive-technology usability.
Android speech takes still have a 120-second limit. Longer desktop dictation
is a separate feature. Prediction, swipe typing, broader language support,
Incognito and touch heatmaps are not included in this snapshot.
Typing needs no model or microphone permission. Dictation starts only by an
explicit action and is disabled in password fields. No Internet permission,
ambient recording, typing history, clipboard monitoring or saved audio history
is added. Explicit Copy/Cut/Paste still use the receiving editor's clipboard
commands. Keyboard screenshot protection remains enabled.
Utterleaf Windows 0.4.6 RC2
Utterleaf 0.4.6 RC2 is a Windows desktop preview for trying the new dictation
and long-recording workflows. The stable release remains v0.4.5.
- Keep speaking: manually started recording has no scheduled duration cutoff.
Audio is temporarily stored on local disk and recognized in bounded batches
after you stop. Stop, Esc and quit remain available. - Transcribe long files: import recordings without an application total-duration
limit, choose an available audio track, review the text and export TXT, SRT or VTT.
Common compressed formats require an explicitly selected external decoder;
PCM WAV works directly. Separate track exports are not synchronized timelines. - Stop at the end of speech: optionally enable a local 0.5–3 second pause
detector. Each take still starts manually. Review is the default; automatic
insertion is a separate choice. - Choose Markdown: Vocabulary → Output style adds local formatting for explicit
headings and lists. Prose remains the default; raw/code input stays literal. - Cleaner delivery: fixes cover sentence/list boundaries, caret-adjacent spacing
in supported native Windows fields, cancellation and uncertain paste results.
Download and try
Download Utterleaf-windows-x64-cpu.zip, extract the entire archive into a new
folder, then open Utterleaf/utterleaf.exe. Quit the older app first. Keep the
_internal folder beside the executables. Settings and previously downloaded
models remain in their existing local locations; keep the old app folder if you
want to return to v0.4.5. Default shortcut: Ctrl+Win.
This is a portable Windows x64 CPU build; Python is included. Speech recognition
runs locally. Speech-model weights and optional CUDA libraries are separate;
model setup may download the selected model. FFmpeg and PyAV native codecs are
not included. Third-party notices and executable checksums are inside the archive;
the separate Utterleaf-windows-x64-cpu.zip.sha256 verifies the download.
The preview is unsigned. Windows may show a SmartScreen reputation warning.
This release does not include new macOS, Linux or Android binaries.
Preview limits
Continuous recording uses temporary, unencrypted local audio files, approximately
220–660 MiB per hour depending on the input rate. They are removed on completion
or cancellation; this is not secure erasure. Free disk space and system resources
still limit session length, and transcript text grows with the recording.
The two-minute text recovery/review window remains separate from recording length.
Verified review insertion and caret-aware corrections require a supported native
Windows Edit field. Browsers and other unsupported review targets use Copy.
Ordinary dictation paste remains guarded at the window level. Check the target
field before retrying any delivery reported as uncertain.
Live OBS transcription is not available yet. Real microphone endurance, broad
editor coverage, accessibility and performance on additional hardware remain
under validation. Source and packaged fixture checks are not certification of
every microphone or application.
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha15
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha15
This experimental preview makes the original Utterleaf keyboard substantially
more compact and gives it the shorter installed name Utterleaf.
What changed
- One sliding Tools strip. Select all, Cut, Copy, Paste and additional tools
share a horizontal row. Swipe the strip or use More to reveal actions; the
ABC exit stays visible. Opening Tools no longer stacks five rows above the keys. - Separate layers for controls. Layout/settings and Edit replace the letter
area. Terminal navigation and function keys use replacement layers with one
modifier row. The optional number row remains an independent preference. - Hold comma for settings. A normal tap still inserts one comma. Holding
opens the compact layout/settings layer without inserting punctuation.
Cancellation and session changes discard pending holds; private-draft guards
continue to prevent leaving the protected editor through Settings. - Backspace selection. Drag left from Backspace to preview a selection and
release to delete it once. Reversing shrinks the selection without crossing its
starting point. Tap and held-repeat deletion remain available. Editor support
varies, and restricted or unconfirmed editor states refuse the gesture. - Clearer presentation. The toolbar uses restrained controls, consistent
labels and secondary hints. The launcher and Android keyboard chooser now show
Utterleaf. The optional voice-only provider is Utterleaf dictation.
Alpha14's two-thumb rollover, QWERTY/QWERTZ/AZERTY layouts, one-hand alignment,
local emoji, Latin composition, private drafts and visible long-press hint
selection remain included. The keyboard engine is Utterleaf's own implementation.
Install and updates
Use Utterleaf-Android-0.1.0-alpha15.apk, version code 15. The package remains
org.utterleaf.voice and retains the persistent alpha03-and-later signing
identity. Update an existing signed preview in place; do not uninstall first.
The shorter display name does not create a second app or a new settings store.
Automated checks cover native editor,
gesture, privacy and layout behavior. The signing workflow requires successful
exact-revision Android CI, package/version/certificate checks and signed
install/upgrade/reinstall checks before publication.
Physical-phone testing is deferred to follow-up user feedback. TalkBack, Switch
Access, landscape, broad editor behavior and real Obtainium updates remain
unverified. Emulator and owned-view renders do not establish typing comfort or
assistive-technology usability.
Android speech takes still have a 120-second limit. Longer desktop dictation
is a separate feature. Prediction, swipe typing, broader language support,
Incognito and touch heatmaps are not included in this snapshot.
Typing needs no model or microphone permission. Dictation starts only by an
explicit action and is disabled in password fields. No Internet permission,
ambient recording, typing history, clipboard monitoring or saved audio history
is added. Explicit Copy/Cut/Paste still use the receiving editor's clipboard
commands. Keyboard screenshot protection remains enabled.
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha14
Utterleaf Android 0.1.0-alpha14
- Alpha14 is an experimental update to the original
org.utterleaf.voice
keyboard. It keeps the alpha03-and-later signing identity and increases the
Android version code to 14. Install over a signed alpha13 release; do not
uninstall to update. - This snapshot includes the reviewed editor/session hardening, continuous
two-thumb rollover, QWERTY/QWERTZ/AZERTY layouts, one-hand alignment,
local emoji browsing, Latin compose, private drafts, and the visible-hint
default for long-press alternate selection. - The long-press hint behavior has source and independent review evidence, and
its focused API 35 gesture/layout run passes all 16 tests. Full exact-SHA CI,
protected signing and signed upgrade/reinstall remain required. TalkBack,
Switch Access, landscape, broad editor and real Obtainium update acceptance
remain open. Physical-phone testing is deferred to follow-up user feedback for
this alpha and has not been performed. - This release does not include the separate experimental foundation package
(org.utterleaf.keyboard.experimental) or any code frommobile/latinime.
Release scope and limits
Alpha14 remains an English, CPU-only experimental keyboard. The source changes
listed above are bounded additions to the existing keyboard; prediction, swipe,
ambient capture, clipboard history, contact learning, network access and
arbitrary model/plugin loading remain outside this release. Emulator results
are regression evidence and do not establish physical-device or accessibility
usability.
- Key-height and bottom-space sliders expose their displayed values to
accessibility services, including after Reset. - Quick toolbar toggles synchronize in-memory preferences with the saved
snapshot, preserving unrelated saved options. - QA now covers live-IME editing actions and stale controls, slider value
updates, accessibility-driven persistence, reset cancellation/confirmation,
and gesture cancellation without fixed success delays. Physical-device and
TalkBack acceptance remain open. - Updates retain the existing signing identity. Install over the signed preview;
no uninstall is required.
Included from alpha12
- Tap Edit in the toolbar for Undo, Redo, Select all, Cut, Copy, Paste,
four-way cursor movement, selection mode, Home and End. ABC returns to typing.
The action panel replaces the letters instead of adding height above them. - Actions work through the current editor's Android API, including the practice
editor and local transcript editor. Unsupported commands show Key unavailable.
Undo/redo depend on the receiving editor's history and command support. - No clipboard monitoring or history: Copy/Cut/Paste happen only on explicit taps
through the editor. Copy/Cut are blocked for password fields. Raw terminal
fields receive no context-menu or fallback Ctrl commands from these actions;
use Terminal controls for terminal shortcuts. - Switching fields, leaving the panel or resetting it invalidates old action
controls. Error feedback has room below the toolbar when needed.
Included from alpha11
- A compact toolbar provides number-row and terminal-mode toggles without opening
Settings. Toggles preserve other preferences and stay synchronized with the
Settings practice keyboard. Utterleaf artwork replaces the Voice text button,
with a full-size touch target and a Dictate accessibility label. - Expand or collapse the transcript before inserting. Review supports scrolling
and selection, with Edit transcript beside the expansion control. Recording
preferences and model selection stay out of review; entering editing restores
a smaller preview to leave room for the keys. - Reaching the recording limit now changes the controls to Transcribing without
requiring a Stop tap. Late status callbacks cannot overwrite review or affect
the next take.
Updates use the existing signing identity and an increased version code. Install
over an existing signed release; no uninstall is needed. Processing remains local
and CPU-only. GPU/NPU support and an optional desktop on-screen keyboard remain
planned work, not features of this APK.
Included from alpha10
- Hold Ctrl or Alt and press another key with a second finger. Ctrl+Backspace
sends word deletion to compatible editors. The modifier remains active for
subsequent presses until released; holding Delete repeats the modified key.
Moving outside, cancellation and panel changes clear the physical chord.
Tap-to-arm remains available. Application shortcut behavior varies; this does
not implement drag-to-preview deletion or universal desktop shortcut parity. - Held deletion has its own preference, enabled by default, separate from
repeated-tap filtering. Reset restores it without deleting imported models. - Keep multiple reviewed English models installed and switch without reimporting.
Setup shows Fast (tiny.en), Balanced (base.en) and Larger (small.en), plus
installed/active status. A larger model costs more memory and processing time
and does not guarantee accuracy. The idle voice panel offers a quick model
choice when multiple models are installed. Switches apply between takes. - Old verified imports remain available after upgrading. Imports still verify
full SHA-256 before publication; invalid imports preserve the previous model.
Delete an individual model in setup. Deleting the active model requires
selecting another installed model before dictation can resume.
One-handed voice controls and local transcript editing build on the keyboard editing improvements. This is still an
alpha keyboard; suggestions, autocorrection, swipe typing, multilingual layouts
and emoji remain roadmap work.
-
One primary voice button stays in place: Speak, Stop, then Insert. A short
post-insertion delay prevents a rapid second tap starting another capture. -
Tapping Dictate on the typing keyboard immediately starts a reviewable take.
Returning to a field never starts recording automatically. The voice heading
reuses the desktop's transparent idle, recording and processing icons. -
Edit transcript opens a local typing surface. Use edits returns to review;
Insert sends the edited text. Edits stay in the protected panel, are not saved,
and are cleared on expiry, discard, dismissal or input-session changes. -
Optional hold-to-speak mode starts after the system hold delay and inserts
after release and recognition. Slide outside to cancel. A changed field or
dismissed panel cancels delivery. Review/tap mode remains the default. -
Failed automatic insertion retains the transcript for an explicit retry or edit.
Reset keyboard preferences also restores review mode. -
Hold the period key for common punctuation, slide to a highlighted mark and
release. A normal tap still types a period; slide away to cancel. -
Tune key height and bottom spacing independently, with a live practice area.
Practice text is bounded, protected from screenshots, never saved and cleared
when leaving settings. Reset restores default height and spacing. -
Hold Shift first, then slide the spacebar with a second finger to select text.
Either finger lifting stops selection, without typing a space or latching Shift.
Tools → Select plus the arrows provides a tap-only route. -
Hold Backspace or forward Delete for steady repetition after the system hold
delay. Release, move outside or dismiss the keyboard to stop. Repeat filtering
disables held deletion. No automatic acceleration to whole-word deletion. -
Tools exposes Delete to right, Home and End; the optional terminal layer retains
Esc, Tab, Ctrl/Alt, arrows, Page Up/Down, Insert and F1–F12. -
Shift-space selection dispatches only Shift+arrow, independent of armed Ctrl/Alt.
Editor support varies; named terminal and physical-phone acceptance remain open. -
Import a model identifies supported tiny.en, base.en and small.en files by
verified size and SHA-256. The download choice no longer restricts import.
A failed import preserves the previous model; the app still has no Internet permission. -
Slide the spacebar left/right to move the cursor; tap it to type a space.
-
Hold a letter, slide to the highlighted accent/symbol and release to insert it.
Slide away to cancel. The compact strip stays inside the protected keyboard window. -
Cancellation, multitouch, panel changes and dismissal clear active gestures.
-
Secondary symbols are visible on letter keys by default; hide them in keyboard settings.
-
For a tap-only route to an accent or secondary symbol,
choose Tools → Accents, then a letter. Cancel returns without inserting anything. -
Shift and Caps apply to accents. Unsupported terminal combinations show an error
without silently inserting plain text. Common Latin accents are not full language support. -
Old keyboard/picker callbacks are invalidated on layout or input-session changes.
-
Hints yield to primary labels at very large font sizes; accent selection remains
available with hints hidden. -
Consistent staggered letter rows, Shift/Delete beside the letters, a wide
spacebar, direct comma/period keys and a highlighted editor action. -
Compact Tools button reveals cursor controls, Caps Lock, settings and switching.
-
Dark/light keycaps with visible focus and selected states; larger keys retained.
-
Optional number row, independent of the optional terminal controls.
-
Guided keyboard setup with separate typing/voice readiness and verified
tiny.en, base.en and small.en model choices, sizes and browser download links. -
Terminal controls provide Esc, Tab, Ctrl, Alt, arrows, Home/End, Page Up/Down and
F1–F12, Insert and forward Delete. Ctrl/Alt release after the next key and reset when the field changes.
Raw terminal fields accept ASCII key events only when terminal mode is enabled;
dictation stays disabled there. Terminal applications determine shortcut support.

Utterleaf Foundation preview01 — experimental keyboard
An installable experimental test build, separate from the shipping Utterleaf Android app. This is the LatinIME foundation from merged PR #20, not the completed keyboard replacement.
Download Utterleaf-Foundation-0.1.0-preview01.apk below. Requires Android 8 or newer on ARM64 or x86-64. The installed app version is 0.1.0-foundation01; preview01 is this download channel label. Open it, choose Enable test keyboard, then Choose keyboard. The experimental application ID lets it coexist with alpha13.
Available: basic tap typing, themes, height/bottom spacing, feedback controls, practice and local notices.
Not included yet: offline voice integration, production dictionaries/correction, swipe recognition, or the full editing/terminal interface. Physical-phone and accessibility acceptance remain open.
The release APK is non-debuggable and signed with a dedicated experimental identity. It does not request network or microphone permission. No models or binary dictionaries are bundled. This first signed preview does not update developer debug-signed copies of the experimental app; it does not alter alpha13.
Verified: 12 JVM tests and 112 API 35 emulator tests; native ARM64/x86-64 release assembly, lint, packaged notices, IME recovery and dictionary publication crash probes. The exact signed release APK also installed on a fresh API 35 emulator and passed both real-IME typing/capability tests. CI: https://github.com/RioPlay/utterleaf/actions/runs/34606586960
Source commit: d2965d3. SHA256SUMS and BUILD-INFO.json identify the APK and signing certificate. The companion notices ZIP duplicates the actual APK's notice viewer and supplies provenance evidence. No claim of a complete legal audit or physical-device certification is made.
