Internal rewrite to fix problems with connection recovery

To make the recovery process work when there is only one media, and to avoid flooding of the queues, some aspects of the recovery and messaging had to be rewritten.
As this neither adds functionality, alters the API, and currently affects very few it is released as a patch.
