06/19/2024 Spaceport America Cup (RPi Pico)
This is the version of the Active Drag System software that flew on the 2024 Spaceport America Cup Rocket named "Inferno." Lots of changes were introduced between the previous version and this one including but not limited to:
- Kalman Filter from external source replaced with Jazz implementation
- Logging to RAM buffer before launch to limit storage taken up by data at the pad
- IMU and Altimeter class implementation overhaul
- IMU Calibration tool for obtaining the offsets to be used on boot instead of the BNO055 auto-calibration
While we do not have onboard footage for this launch to concretely prove the ADS' deployment, we do have the onboard logs to indicate the flaps tried and seemingly succeeded in deploying. This is supported by the fact that they seemed to have had an affect on the barometric altimeter such that the apogee transition occurred prematurely in line with when a supposed max deployment and retraction occurred (see graph below).
Additionally, an error was made in the "altimeter::set_threshold_altitude" method such that it was adding the current altitude to the desired threshold when it should not have been. This resulted in the lack of a logging end condition, but it did not affect the behavior of actual deployment.
04/20/2024 Test Launch (RPi Pico)
This was the version of the Active Drag System that would have been used on the rocket flown in Birch Run, MI on 04/20/2024. Unfortunately, a weather scrub prevented the actual full-scale ADS testing. This version sees the use of a Raspberry Pi Pico over the previous Beaglebone Black in addition to IMU acceleration data fused with altitude data for algorithmic deployment based on the previous year's drag analysis equations. It also includes parallelized logging of data to an external EEPROM Flash chip. While modifications on this code may still occur, this version holds much of the primary spirit of the final version to be flown at the 2024 Spaceport America Cup.
02/24/2024 Test Launch (BB Black)
This was the version of the Active Drag System Software stack utilized on the rocket flown in Dalzell, SC on 02/24/2024. It contains code that ran on a Beaglebone Black. There is only an altimeter-based state machine to deploy the servo, via the Programmable Real-Time Unit (PRU) featured on the Beaglebone Black, during the coast phase of the flight path. Unfortunately due to disorganization and rush, all of the code is contained within test_launch.c and pru_pwm.c.
