LumaLayer User Guide
Welcome to LumaLayer! This tool is designed to turn 2D images into 3D filament paintings and unique physical products. This guide will walk you through the interface, the advanced merchandise features, and the new multi-material dithering workflows.
- Height = Brightness: Dark pixels print low. Light pixels print high.
- Blending: We use very thin layers (0.08mm). By stacking different colors, we can predict exactly how they blend to create new shades based on the Beer-Lambert Law of light physics.
- Dithering: High-frequency, multi-color pixel arrangements. Instead of solid horizontal color slabs, dithering prints micro-scale dots of different colors side-by-side to replicate complex photographic gradients on flat 3D surfaces.
- Merchandise Factory: LumaLayer isn't just for making plates; it generates ready-to-sell products like interlocking puzzles, large-scale tile murals, and packaging.
The screen is divided into three main sections:
- Left Panel (Filament Stack): Your palette. Define your colors and TD values here.
- Center Panel (Reference): Your source image. Use the Magic Wand, Personalization Tools, and Zoom here.
- Right Panel (Simulation): The preview. Shows a physics-based simulation of how the final plastic object will look.
💡 Pro Tip for Laptop Users (Sidebar Cleanup):
LumaLayer Pro features a Collapsible Sidebar Accordion. Click the ▶ arrow next to any category header (like Cookie Cutter or Puzzle Factory) to collapse unused tools. To scale the interface, use View > Zoom in the top menu (125% - 150% is recommended for High-DPI laptops).
Located in the Sidebar under the "Cookie Cutter (Shaping)" and "Text Overlay" tabs.
- Cookie Cutter (Shaping): Change the silhouette of your print. Choose from Circles, Hearts, Stars, Ovals, or Rounded Rectangles.
- Keychain Loop: Check the "Add Keychain Loop" box to automatically add a reinforced 3D loop to the top of your object. Use the position sliders to place it anywhere on the edge.
-
Text Overlay: Add text directly to the 3D model.
- Resolution Independent: Text stays crisp and scales perfectly regardless of image resolution.
-
Custom Fonts: Click the folder icon [📁] to load any
.ttfor.otffile from your computer. - Dilation Outline Buffer: When exporting dithered prints, LumaLayer automatically applies a 1-pixel safety buffer around your text. This prevents dither dots from printing inside the notches of letters (such as inside a "V" or "A") and prevents them from fusing together during slicing.
Located in the top menu under Tools > LumaMix Studio.... This engine allows you to print full-color photographs using multi-material hardware (like the Bambu Lab AMS).
-
🎨 Multi-Mask Painting Workflow: You can literally paint different parts of your image to print in different physical colors.
- In the main LumaLayer window, click
+ New Maskinside the Color Masks panel to create a new paint layer, assign a color swatch, and select it. - Use the Brush, Eraser, or Magic Wand to paint specific regions of your reference image (e.g., painting the dog's shirt orange, and the background blue).
- Click
+ New Maskagain to add more layers and paint other sections. - When you open LumaMix, these painted regions will automatically render as distinct dithered colors and export as pre-aligned multi-material parts inside your 3MF package!
- In the main LumaLayer window, click
- Dither Engines: Choose between Floyd-Steinberg (for traditional, high-frequency dot dithering) and Riemersma (Organic) (which uses a space-filling Hilbert curve to eliminate directional artifacts).
- Brightness & Contrast Sliders: Adjust the dynamic range of your dither preview in real-time.
- Gamma (Shadows) Slider: Bends the curve of the midtones without clipping your whites or blacks. Adjusting Gamma allows you to precisely control how quickly the dither dots fade into the dark base plate, keeping details visible without washing out highlights.
- Independent Pop Color Boost: Select a mask layer in your main window and adjust the boost slider inside LumaMix. This artificially brightens the pixels only inside that painted mask before the dither runs, letting you flood backgrounds with vibrant color pops independently of the rest of the image.
-
◀ Hide Settings Button: On smaller screens, the settings sidebar can crowd the image. Click
◀ Hide Settingsin the top bar to collapse the controls and center your unwarped dithered preview at its full500pxsize.
This module turns your art into a finished product.
Turn your art into a fully interlocking 3D Jigsaw Puzzle.
- Grid Size: Adjust the number of pieces (e.g., 5x5).
- Tolerance (Gap): This is the physical gap between pieces. 0.20mm is standard. If pieces are too tight, increase this to 0.25mm.
- Export Puzzle STLs: Generates a single plated STL file containing all the interlocking pieces.
- 💡 Slicer Tip: If you want to print pieces one at a time or rearrange them on your bed, open the file in your slicer, right-click the model, and select "Split to Objects." This allows you to move every piece individually.
Creates a dedicated tray to help assemble and display your puzzle.
- Full Inlay Mode: Includes raised ridges that trace the jigsaw pattern. Great for stability and beginners.
- Border Only Mode: A clean outer frame with a solid floor. Provides stability without giving away the puzzle solution.
Generates custom-fitted, sliding-lid packaging.
- Automatic Scaling: The Tray and Lid are automatically calculated to fit your specific puzzle or painting.
- Custom Lid: The lid automatically features an embossed version of your artwork and text, creating a professional retail look.
Print massive, wall-sized creations by slicing your designs into a modular tile grid.
- Grid vs. Size Mode: Slice by a specific row/column count or target your tiles to a physical size (e.g., 100x100mm).
- Bevel Joint Width: Automatically slopes the dither heights down to the base plate at the edge of each tile. This ensures that dither dots never get cut in half, allowing tiles to join together with clean, seamless, flush joints.
The perfect tool for logos, signs, and coasters. Turn vectors and flat colors into multi-part assemblies.
- The Detail Level Slider: When converting high-frequency photographs into flat art, the image can be too "busy." Drag the Detail Level slider down to run a high-sigma Bilateral Filter and Posterization. This smooths out hair, noise, and straw while preserving sharp facial boundaries, creating a bold "pop-art" vector model that slices flawlessly.
"Lift" specific objects (like a red umbrella in a B&W photo) so they print at a higher Z-height.
- Toggle "Edit Mask" ON.
- Left Click on the object to mask it (turns Green). Right Click to add missed spots.
- Adjust "Lift" slider to physically raise the object's geometry.
Located on every Layer Control (Checkbox) Check this box to bypass the blending physics for a specific color.
- How it works: It forces that specific color to print with at least 5 layers of thickness (0.40mm).
- When to use: Crucial for Text, Frames, and Logos where you want pure, opaque color without shadows bleeding through from below.
To get the correct results, your slicer (Bambu Studio, Orca, Cura, PrusaSlicer) must use these settings:
- Layer Height: 0.08mm
- First Layer Height: 0.16mm
- Infill: 100% (Rectilinear).
- Bottom/Top Shells: Set to 4 or more (ensures the print is solid plastic with no internal air gaps).
- Walls: 1 or 2 is sufficient.
When you save your standard art, LumaLayer generates a Recipe (HTML/Text).
- Open the Recipe file.
- It will tell you exactly which layer number to swap your filaments (e.g., Layer 18: Swap to Red).
- In your slicer, right-click the layer slider and select "Add Pause" or "Change Filament" at those specific numbers.
When exporting a multi-color dither or flat-art print, LumaLayer packages the models into a single, pre-aligned 3MF Component Assembly.
- In your slicer, open your pre-configured dither template canvas (e.g.,
LumaLayer_Canvas.3mf). - Delete the placeholder canvas.
- Select Add File (Ctrl + I), paste the copied path from your clipboard, and click Import as a Single Object with Multiple Parts.
- Assign your colored filaments to their matching numbered slots in the Objects list. The slicer will slice them simultaneously, automatically managing the multi-material toolpaths!
