Don's System Monitor

v2025.12.1 (YYYY.MM.R)

Unified system monitoring application with host and viewer modes in a single binary/script.
Designed for local monitoring, headless servers, and secure remote viewing.

How to use

Host mode

Runs the system metrics collector, optional local GUI, and remote TCP server.

With GUI

(Default unless headless_default is true in config or --headless is supplied)

python main.py --mode host

Headless host

(No GUI, logging + remote TCP interface only)

python main.py --mode host --headless

Viewer mode

Remote client GUI that connects to a host over TCP and displays its metrics.

Using config defaults

(IP, port, and password read from sysmon.config.json)

python main.py --mode viewer

Overriding target from CLI

python main.py --mode viewer --server-ip 192.168.1.50 --server-port 34255 --password someSecret --refresh-ms 1000

Configuration

All runtime behavior is controlled through sysmon.config.json.

Host / server settings

  • remote_bind_addr
  • remote_port
  • remote_password
  • resource thresholds (CPU / RAM)
  • headless_default

Viewer / client settings

  • viewer_default
  • viewer_server_ip
  • viewer_server_port
  • viewer_password
    • If empty, defaults to remote_password
  • viewer_refresh_ms

Notes

  • I personally suggest launching the executable, closing it and editing the config it created before restarting and using the application/service
  • One binary supports both host and viewer modes.
  • Mode selection is controlled via --mode or config defaults.
  • Remote access uses a simple authenticated TCP interface.
  • Designed for safe headless operation and low-overhead continuous use.
