ScummVM for Wii U — Aroma + Experimental RPX

This release adds a separate RPX package for community testing on Wii U
homebrew setups without Aroma, alongside the existing Aroma WUHB package.

This is an unofficial community port, not an official ScummVM release.
No RetroArch required. Games are not included.

Downloads

Choose the package for your setup:

Download Intended use Status
ScummVM-wiiu-aroma-20260928.zip Launch from the Wii U Menu with Aroma Tested on real hardware
ScummVM-wiiu-rpx-experimental.zip Launch through an RPX-capable Wii U Homebrew Launcher/loader Experimental — not yet verified outside Aroma
SHA256SUMS-20260928.txt Verify the downloaded ZIP files Checksums for both packages

You do not need to install both packages.

Download an installation ZIP from Assets, not GitHub's automatically
generated Source code archives.

What's new

  • Separate RPX distribution with Homebrew Launcher metadata.
  • English installation instructions and a community testing checklist.
  • Updated documentation distinguishing tested Aroma functionality from
    unverified non-Aroma compatibility.
  • Both packages include the required auxiliary data and documentation.

The standalone RPX is identical to the executable embedded in the tested
WUHB. No gameplay or input changes were introduced for this packaging update.

An RPX package does not automatically establish compatibility with
Tiramisu or every other homebrew environment.

Features

  • Standard ScummVM launcher.
  • Video output on the TV and GamePad.
  • GamePad touchscreen pointer control and tap-to-click.
  • Analog-stick pointer control with physical mouse buttons.
  • Native Wii U on-screen keyboard for text and save descriptions.
  • Audio playback, SD card browsing, configuration and save files.
  • ScummVM name and icon on the Wii U Menu through Aroma.

Installation

Aroma

  1. Download ScummVM-wiiu-aroma-20260928.zip.
  2. Extract its contents to the root of your SD card.
  3. Confirm that wiiu/apps/ScummVM.wuhb exists.
  4. Launch ScummVM from the Wii U Menu.

Experimental RPX / Homebrew Launcher

  1. Back up your existing ScummVM configuration and saves.
  2. Download ScummVM-wiiu-rpx-experimental.zip.
  3. Extract its contents to the root of your SD card.
  4. Confirm that wiiu/apps/scummvm/ScummVM.rpx and meta.xml exist.
  5. Open your existing RPX-capable Wii U Homebrew Launcher and select
    "ScummVM (RPX test)".
  6. Follow the included README-RPX.md testing instructions.

This is a native Wii U application, not a Wii/vWii Homebrew Channel app.
It is not a WUP installer or an installable channel package.

For either package, merge existing folders rather than deleting them.
Keep the supplied scummvm/data directory. Use Add Game to select a folder
containing your own game data.

Both packages use the same configuration and save paths. Back them up
before switching between environments.

Default GamePad controls

Input Action
Touchscreen Position or move the pointer
Short tap Left mouse click
Left analog stick Move the pointer
A Left mouse click
B Right mouse click
Hold R Slow pointer movement for precision
L Game menu / F5 where supported
+ ScummVM global main menu
− Open the native keyboard
X Skip the current dialogue line where supported
Y Skip or cancel / Escape where supported

Game-specific behavior and custom mappings may differ.

In ScummVM launcher dialogs, A clicks and Y closes/cancels.
B is not a universal Back button.

Native keyboard

The keyboard opens automatically when a supported field requests text.
You can also select a text field and press Minus.

  • OK inserts text and closes the keyboard; it does not activate Save.
  • Wait for the complete name to appear before saving.
  • Cancel closes only the keyboard without inserting text.
  • The keyboard starts empty and inserts at the field's cursor.
It does not load existing field contents for editing.

Hardware testing

Successful tests under Aroma have been reported with:

  • Sam & Max Hit the Road
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Reported results include gameplay, saving, audio, controls and the native
keyboard. The Aroma menu icon has also been confirmed on hardware.

These are tests of specific scenarios, not full-game completion reports
or a guarantee of compatibility with every game edition.

The standalone RPX still needs community testing outside Aroma.

Help test the RPX package

Please check:

  • Startup and video on both screens.
  • SD card browsing and game detection.
  • Touch, analog movement and mouse buttons.
  • Keyboard opening, confirmation, cancellation and reopening.
  • Music, sound effects and speech where available.
  • Creating and reloading a new save.
  • Quit, relaunch and configuration persistence.
  • HOME background/return behavior.

Report your Wii U firmware, homebrew environment, Homebrew Launcher
version, launch method, game edition and results. Please confirm whether
Aroma was active during the test.

Attach scummvm/scummvm.log if it was created.
Copy the log before relaunching: it is overwritten on the next run.

Known limitations

  • Only the SCUMM engine is enabled in these packages.
  • Optional MP3, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC decoders are not included.
  • MT-32 emulation, networking and OpenGL/shaders are not enabled.
  • Other controllers and untested game editions need further validation.
  • Non-Aroma startup, keyboard, audio and exit behavior remain unverified.
