v1.1.0
v1.0.1
v1.0.0
-
SisterHL2030 leaves beta.
-
The driver now installs and runs on any Mac. Earlier packages were linked against software that only exists on a machine with developer tools installed, so on most Macs the printing service could not start at all.
-
The printing service no longer holds on to memory after a job. It used to keep about 75 MB after a Normal page and 170 MB after a Fine one, for as long as it kept running.
-
When the printer isn't plugged in, the installer no longer tells you to write the USB address into a file that the driver no longer reads.
v0.9.5
-
Printing to Letterhead media no longer waits forever for a hand-fed sheet — it now feeds from the cassette like ordinary paper.
-
The printer now reports cover-open, paper-jam, and empty-tray conditions, and advertises the cassette's supported paper sizes.
-
Oversized pages no longer print with blank scanlines — every page is cropped to the printable area before it's sent to the printer.
-
Setting up more than one printer queue no longer leaves every queue but the first missing its friendly Bonjour name and job limits.
-
The Quality menu in the print dialog no longer shows half-translated Portuguese labels.
-
The installer now calls the top quality setting "Fine" instead of "Best", and correctly describes the queue as AirPrint rather than IPP Everywhere.
-
The installer no longer tells you to turn on Printer Sharing to use AirPrint.
-
The installer no longer reports a successful queue setup when creating the queue actually failed.
-
Toner and drum-life checks are faster and no longer occasionally miss a valid reading.
-
Fixed a crash risk in Preview Halftone when reading certain BMP files.
-
Installer package names now match what's listed on the Releases page.
v0.9.4
-
Printing a second document right after the first no longer leaves it waiting — sometimes for minutes — before anything happens. The toner and drum check was holding on to the printer far longer than it should.
-
Pages could come out with lines half printed and blank gaps between them, where data was lost on the way to the printer. Those writes are now retried instead of being dropped in silence.
-
Solid dark areas dither instead of flooding with toner: coverage is capped at 80% in Draft and Normal, and 90% in Fine.
-
Draft and Normal print a little lighter. Toner saving no longer feeds back into the halftone, which had been asking for extra toner in exactly the two modes chosen to lay down less. Fine is unchanged.
v0.9.2
Two halftone screens are now separate installers: Newspaper style (a
45° clustered-dot screen, like a printed halftone photo) alongside the
existing Pencil style (error-diffusion, like a pencil sketch). Pick
whichever suits what you print — the README shows a side-by-side sample of
both — and switch any time by running the other installer.
Darkness and contrast are now driven by a measured model of how toner
actually develops on this printer, rather than fixed per-mode multipliers.
Prints should look truer to the original across the full range from
highlights to shadows.
Saturated colours (strong yellow, cyan, etc.) no longer print as if they
were blank paper.
v0.9.1
- Smaller, lighter-weight driver: cut idle memory use by dropping AppKit and unused localizations, and streaming the halftone pass instead of buffering it.
- Fixed a bug where the printer's network hostname could leak into status/discovery.
- Installer packages are now signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so Gatekeeper no longer flags them on install.
v0.9.0 (Beta)
First public beta of SisterHL2030, a native driver for the Brother HL-2030 on Apple Silicon Macs.
- Runs natively on Apple Silicon. No Rosetta 2 required, so the printer keeps working even after Apple removes it from macOS.
- AirPrint sharing. Connect the HL-2030 to a Mac over USB, turn on Printer Sharing, and every Mac, iPhone, and iPad on the network can print to it wirelessly.
- Pages print at the correct size by default. No more half-size output from a scale-to-fit bug in older setups.
- Better-looking prints. Uses Atkinson dithering for halftones, giving smoother grays and photos than the flat black-and-white output of the old driver.
- Three quality modes: Draft (300 dpi), Normal (600 dpi), and Fine (1200 dpi).
- Toner and drum levels show up right in System Settings' Supply Levels panel.
- Simple installer.
InstallSisterDrivers.pkgwalks you through connecting the printer and clearing out the old Brother drivers first, in 10 languages.UninstallSisterDrivers.pkgandUninstallBrotherDrivers.pkgcleanly remove either driver if you ever need to.
This is a beta: the core printing, quality, and AirPrint features are all working, but it hasn't yet seen a wide variety of Macs and print jobs. Bug reports are very welcome.
