Identifying Legal Issues in our Software

Legal Concerns:

Is our software violating any licensing agreements?

First, here are all of the third-party software that we plan to use: Steam API

Ensure we have the right to use as we plan:

For the Steam API, the licensing agreement can be found here.

Our software will not violate any of the sections. Focusing on the certain points pertaining to our app, from Section 2 (License to Steam Web API and Steam Data):

  • We will post a privacy policy.
  • We agree to provide the Steam Data without any modifications to the users.
  • We will keep our Steam Web API key confidential and not share it with other parties.
  • We will not violate any other licenses
  • We will not go over the 100,000 per day call limit for the Steam Web API.

We will stay under the Firebase/ MongoDB rate limits when accessing data.

Are there any intellectual property constraints placed by the owner of any dataset we need to use?

First, here are our datasets:

There might be an issue of Game Names, but "you are allowed to include game names that are trademarked (like Fortnite, Valorant, Minecraft, etc.) in your filter or search list, as long as you use them purely for identification and categorization, not for branding or implying affiliation."

For Steam API, here is the relevant portion of the licensing agreement:

"9. Intellectual Property. The Steam Web API, Steam Data, and Valve Brand & Links are the property of Valve, and subject to the intellectual property rights of Valve and its licensors. (c) 1996 -2010 Valve Corporation. All rights not explicitly granted are reserved. Valve, Steam, the Valve logo and the Steam logo are registered trademarks of Valve Corporation."

Can our users use our app to break the law? Post copyright works on your web app? Steal information? etc.

There are a few ways a user might use our platform to break the law. A user might post copyright works such as clips or videos from other players and streamers, and claim them as their own. Identity theft is another issue that might occur. A user might go as far as to post explicit photos and videos of themselves or others to their profile, which could be considered sexual harassment. However, our platform has systems in place to deal with bad actors, and a few of those systems can be found in our Ethical Issues wiki page.
