@SH4DOWSIX SH4DOWSIX released this 13 Oct 16:07

VelCal 0.0.5

Standalone and VST3 for Windows x64, Linux x64 and universal macOS. macOS also
includes an AU MIDI effect for Logic's MIDI FX slot.

Changes

  • Standalone MIDI routing: VelCal now uses existing MIDI outputs on every
platform. Set up your own virtual connection using loopMIDI, macOS IAC or
    Linux ALSA MIDI Through.
  • Shareable global curves: Custom presets save as individual
.velcal-curve.json files. Import and Export let you share one curve without
sharing your calibration profile. Existing shared presets gain individual
copies automatically. Applied curves remain stored independently in profiles
    and DAW projects.
  • Played-key selection: Playing a key selects it and scrolls it into view,
including with standalone routing off. Releasing a key leaves it selected.
Playing does not switch tabs or interrupt curve-point dragging.
  • Live velocity display: Both graphs show the last strike with a cyan
marker, guide lines and numeric velocities. The per-key graph shows keyboard
input and corrected key velocity, including trim, with final MIDI velocity
listed separately. The global graph shows the velocity entering the global
curve and its final output. Values remain visible after release.
  • Improved calibration guide: The popup has numbered instructions, a
highlighted firm-press warning, scrolling content and fixed buttons. Guidance
covers object length, consistent placement, overlapping sections, mechanical
thumps and manual tuning when firm presses are uncomfortable.
  • Clearer expectations: The popup and README explain what calibration
improves and what it cannot do. It does not change physical feel or repair
mechanical faults, and playing dynamics are preserved.

Existing schema-4 profiles and DAW project recall remain supported.

Compatibility

Requirements: Windows x64; Linux x64 with glibc 2.35+ and compatible desktop/audio
libraries; macOS 11+ on Intel or Apple Silicon.

Windows/macOS installers are unsigned. macOS binaries are ad-hoc signed but not
Developer ID signed or notarized; security approval may be necessary and managed
Macs may block installation. No paid Apple developer account is used.

Testing

Windows x64, Linux x64 and universal macOS passed automated builds, tests,
packaging and installer verification from source revision
bf359a63bfac333fec77dc67b22282073e93d79d. macOS also passed installed AU
validation for both architectures.

Windows has the most extensive real keyboard and DAW testing. Standalone MIDI
input/output and plugin loading were confirmed on Linux Mint and macOS for
0.0.4; broader calibration, DAW routing and project recall remain unverified
there.

The newest velocity displays and revised calibration popup still need hands-on
validation. An unfinished calibration capture is not saved in DAW state.

Installers preserve per-user profiles/preferences on uninstall and do not bundle
personal calibration data. Release assets include SHA256 checksums.

VelCal 0.0.4

@SH4DOWSIX SH4DOWSIX released this 07 Oct 10:03

VelCal 0.0.4

Standalone plus VST3 for Windows x64, Linux x64, and universal macOS; macOS also
includes an AU MIDI effect for Logic's MIDI FX slot.

Changes

  • Plugin per-key/global tab selection now belongs to the DAW project or preset
state, instead of a shared last-used preference. Standalone still remembers
    its last viewed tab.
  • Profile actions and accent colour selection share a menu beside the profile
selector. New, Open, Save, Save As, Reset All and Delete are grouped together.
Save As creates a separate profile without overwriting the original.
  • Unsaved profile transitions offer Save, Discard or Cancel, with confirmation
    for replacement and destructive actions.
  • Clear Calibration removes calibration data while preserving the global curve
and calibration settings. Reset All also resets the global curve and
calibration settings; changes are not written to the profile until saved.
  • Named global curve presets now persist immediately in a shared library,
independently of saving a profile. Rename, Delete and replacement confirmation
are supported. Existing profile-local presets remain accessible, and library
edits do not change curves already stored in profiles or DAW projects.
  • Compact profile and tab controls share one row, leaving more room for curves.
Version/update status now sits above Global curve, using labels such as
    v0.0.4 and v0.0.4 - v0.0.5 is available.
  • Expanded profile, preset, dialog and DAW-state regression coverage. Existing
    schema-4 profiles remain supported.

VST3 is an instrument-style MIDI processor, not an audio insert. Route its MIDI
output into your piano. In Logic use AU in MIDI FX before the piano.
See installation and routing.

Version 0.0.4 was tested on Linux Mint and macOS: standalone MIDI input/output
worked, and the plugins loaded successfully (VST3, plus AU on macOS).
Windows has more extensive real keyboard/DAW testing, including Studio One
correction and project save/reopen. Broader Linux/macOS calibration, DAW MIDI
routing (including Logic), and project save/reopen remain unverified.
The newest changes still need a fresh hardware calibration pass. An unfinished
calibration capture is not saved in DAW state.
Installers preserve per-user profiles/preferences on uninstall and do not bundle
personal calibration data.

Automated Verification

All native jobs passed from source revision
ed89215e9ef9b85e448ca6c4bfba3814e9d083e1:

  • Windows x64: build, tests, packaging and installer smoke checks.
  • Linux x64: build, tests, DEB/RUN packaging and installer smoke checks.
  • macOS universal: build, tests, PKG packaging, installed AU validation, standalone startup and user-data-preserving uninstall.

Release assets include SHA256 checksums. Automated checks complement the
hands-on testing described above; they do not establish compatibility with
every keyboard, DAW, or operating-system version.

VelCal 0.0.3

@SH4DOWSIX SH4DOWSIX released this 06 Oct 14:31

VelCal 0.0.3

Standalone plus VST3 for Windows x64, Linux x64, and universal macOS; macOS also
includes an AU MIDI effect for Logic's MIDI FX slot.

Changes

  • Modernized shared standalone/plugin interface and new curve-editor app icon,
with larger, sharper header artwork at full opacity.
  • Paintbrush popup with 16 accent colours, remembered across restarts and shared
by standalone and plugin editors without changing calibration profiles.
  • Remembers the last selected per-key/global tab when opening standalone or a
plugin editor, independently of calibration profiles.
  • Safer plugin shutdown: update workers are cancelled/joined while live owners
still exist, and icons no longer retain DLL-static native graphics resources.
The reported Studio One background-process hang no longer reproduces in the
user's rebuilt Windows installation; the individual cause was not isolated.
  • Unboxed GitHub release-update status at the bottom left; taller default and
minimum windows keep it clear of statistics and preserve curve-editor space.
  • Smooth now applies to all keys together on the per-key tab and defaults to on.
Automatic smoothing removes quantization kinks while remaining within one
    velocity step of calibration. Switching off restores the generated map;
manual points, measurements and trims are retained. Global Smooth is separate.
  • Saved profiles display filenames rather than internal MIDI/profile names.
Menus stay inside the editor; unsaved profiles, empty libraries and missing
files recalled from DAW projects are handled explicitly.
  • Curve-point Input/Output readouts show complete numbers without ellipsis,
    including at graph edges.
  • Expanded core, app and plugin regression coverage. Existing schema-4 profiles
remain supported; legacy mixed per-key Smooth settings resolve to off for all
    keys when loaded.

VST3 is an instrument-style MIDI processor, not an audio insert. Route its MIDI
output into your piano. In Logic use AU in MIDI FX before the piano.

Developer ID signed or notarized; security approval may be necessary and managed
Macs may block installation. No paid Apple developer account is used.

Only Windows has real keyboard/DAW validation, including Studio One correction
and project save/reopen. Linux/macOS remain experimental: automated checks do
not establish hardware/DAW compatibility. Real Logic testing is still needed.
The newest UI and smoothing changes still need a fresh hardware calibration
pass. An unfinished calibration capture is not saved in DAW state.
Installers preserve per-user profiles/preferences on uninstall and do not bundle
personal calibration data.

Automated Verification

All native jobs passed from source revision

  • Linux x64: build, tests, DEB/RUN packaging and installer smoke checks.
  • macOS universal: build, tests, PKG packaging, installed AU validation, standalone startup and user-data-preserving uninstall.

Release assets include SHA256 checksums. These automated checks do not replace
real Linux/macOS MIDI hardware or DAW validation.

@SH4DOWSIX SH4DOWSIX released this 05 Oct 22:34

VelCal 0.0.2

Standalone plus VST3 for Windows x64, Linux x64, and universal macOS; macOS also
includes an AU MIDI effect for Logic's MIDI FX slot.

  • Full calibration and editing inside plugins; MIDI devices selected by the DAW.
  • Profiles and edits embedded in DAW projects, with independent instances.
  • Windows Setup EXE, Debian/Ubuntu package, Linux user-local installer, and macOS
component-selectable PKG. Portable packages are no longer distributed.
  • Writable per-user profiles/preferences, preserved on uninstall.

VST3 is an instrument-style MIDI processor, not an audio insert. Route its MIDI
output into your piano. In Logic use AU in MIDI FX before the piano.

Windows/macOS installers are unsigned. macOS binaries are ad-hoc signed but not
Developer ID signed or notarized; security approval may be necessary and managed
Macs may block installation. No paid Apple developer account is used.

Windows Studio One correction and project save/reopen are user-confirmed.
Linux/macOS remain experimental: native automated checks do not establish real
keyboard/DAW compatibility. Logic hardware testing is still needed.
An unfinished calibration capture is not saved in DAW state.

Automated Verification

  • Windows x64:
all three test suites; install, remembered custom-directory upgrade,
standalone startup, and uninstall with user data preserved.
  • Linux x64:
all three test suites; DEB and user-local RUN installation, dependency/startup
checks, component selection, and uninstall with profiles preserved.
  • macOS universal:
all four test suites, both binary CPU slices, and ad-hoc signatures; PKG
installation, AU validation and standalone startup on Apple Silicon and Intel,
    and uninstall with profiles preserved.

Release assets include SHA256 checksums. Platform-specific packaging fixes were
validated in separate native runs; application and plugin source is identical
across those runs and the release tag.

@SH4DOWSIX SH4DOWSIX released this 04 Oct 16:40

VelCal 0.0.1

First public early release of VelCal: per-key MIDI velocity calibration, guided
short-bar capture, editable per-key/global curves, profile saving, and MIDI routing.

Testing Status

Only Windows has been tested with a real keyboard and DAW. Linux and macOS
packages are experimental: GitHub builds and core tests do not establish that
MIDI hardware, virtual ports, calibration, or DAW integration work on them.

If you encounter Linux or macOS issues, please
create an issue on the repository.
Include your OS version, CPU architecture, MIDI device and DAW, the package you
downloaded, and steps to reproduce the problem. Windows issue reports are welcome too.

Downloads And Setup

  • Windows x64 ZIP: extract the whole folder into a writable location and run
VelCal.exe. Create a virtual MIDI port with
    loopMIDI, keep it running,
and select that port as VelCal's MIDI output and the DAW's MIDI input.
  • Linux x64 tar.gz: extract the whole folder and run ./VelCal.AppImage.
Built on Ubuntu 22.04; requires a compatible glibc 2.35+ Linux desktop with X11
or XWayland and ALSA MIDI support. This is not an ARM build.
  • macOS universal ZIP: extract the whole folder to a writable location, such
as a folder under your home directory, then open VelCal.app. Supports Intel
and Apple Silicon; deployment target is macOS 11+. Keep profiles/ beside the
.app rather than placing it inside the bundle.

Profiles and app preferences stay in profiles/ beside the executable, AppImage,
or macOS .app. No personal calibration data is bundled. Keep octave/transpose
settings on your keyboard unchanged between calibration and playing.

Security Warnings

These builds have no trusted publisher signature. The macOS bundle has an
ad-hoc signature for Apple Silicon compatibility, but no Developer ID signature
or Apple notarization. Warnings or blocks are therefore possible.

Only proceed if you trust this repository and the downloaded file. The release
includes SHA256SUMS.txt to check download integrity; checksums are not a publisher
signature or a guarantee of safety.

Windows

For a Microsoft Defender SmartScreen "Windows protected your PC" prompt, choose
More info, then Run anyway if that option is available and you trust the
download. Some policies, including Smart App Control or organization rules, may
block unsigned apps without an individual override. Do not disable antivirus or
system-wide protections to run VelCal; report the block if you cannot proceed.
See Microsoft's SmartScreen guidance.

macOS

Attempt to open VelCal.app once. If blocked because its developer cannot be
verified, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, find the VelCal notice,
and choose Open Anyway, then confirm Open. The option may not be available
on managed Macs. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally or ignore a malware warning.
See Apple's instructions.

Linux

If the AppImage is not executable, run chmod +x ./VelCal.AppImage in its extracted
folder, or enable "Allow executing file as program" in your file manager. If the
filesystem disallows execution, move the whole folder to a writable location
that permits it. Do not run VelCal as root.

If FUSE is unavailable, try ./VelCal.AppImage --appimage-extract-and-run; this
uses temporary extraction instead of mounting. See the
AppImage FUSE troubleshooting guide.

Known Limitations

  • The keyboard display is fixed at 88 keys; MIDI processing supports all 128 notes.
  • No undo/redo, unsaved-change warning, or section manager yet.
  • An earlier stall involving a third-party Windows virtual MIDI endpoint has not
been conclusively resolved. Queue and feedback-flood safeguards remain enabled.
  • Please retain profile backups while trying this early release.
