The Editor In Detail

This page assumes you've been through Getting Started and know the basic import-edit-export loop. Here's what every part of the Editor actually does.

Layouts

Two layout modes:

  • Split - your gameplay and a webcam feed side by side (or stacked), with a draggable seam between them. The seam has an optional melt/blend effect instead of a hard edge.
  • Single panel - one content area filling the frame, plus a branding/fill area. Good when you don't need a cam feed, or want the whole frame on the action.

Boxes resize by dragging their corners or edges. Five layout slots let you save presets you use often (a "gameplay + cam" setup, a "single panel" setup, etc.) so you're not rebuilding the same layout every time.

Keyframes

Want your layout to change over time - the cam box growing during a big moment, a highlight box appearing partway through? Keyframes let you set a layout at a specific point on the timeline, and HERMES smoothly interpolates between keyframes (or holds and cuts instantly, your choice per keyframe). Drag markers on the timeline to retime them.

Highlight boxes (picture-in-picture)

Add one or more highlight boxes - a source crop from anywhere in the frame, placed and sized wherever you want in the output. Useful for boss-bar callouts, chat reactions, anything you want picked out and enlarged. Each highlight can be keyframed independently, including popping in and out of visibility at specific times.

Cuts and audio regions

The timeline is frame-accurate. Press once to mark the start of a cut, press again to mark the end - the removed section turns into a red band you can right-click to restore if you change your mind. Multiple cuts are fine; playback and render both skip the removed sections automatically, video and audio staying in sync.

Audio: there's a whole-clip volume control, plus the ability to mark specific regions of the timeline and adjust their volume independently - handy for a section that's too quiet or a sudden loud moment you want to tame, without touching the rest of the clip.

Branding and watermark

Add one or more image overlays (a logo, a subscribe reminder, whatever) - drag to place, drag the handles to resize, lock the aspect ratio or stretch freely, adjust opacity. There's also a separate name-plate option (your name/handle burned in, left/center/right on the seam) if you want that instead of or alongside image branding.

Render

Two performance modes:

  • Eco (default) - normal priority, safe to run while gaming or streaming alongside.
  • Performance - parallel processing and, if your GPU supports it, hardware encoding (NVENC / AMD / Intel QuickSync) for a significantly faster render. Switch to this when you're not doing anything else demanding at the same time.

Rendering happens in the Editor itself (not Export) so it always works against your live edit - trim points, cuts, keyframes, everything. Export then takes that rendered file and gets it out the door.

Undo/redo, autosave, and other safety nets

Every edit is undoable (multi-step, not just one level back). Your edits autosave per-clip as you work - close the app and come back later, your progress on that clip is still there. There's also a guardrail on very long source files (over about 10 minutes) since editing something that long gets unwieldy fast.

Keyboard shortcuts

Press ? anywhere in the Editor for the full cheat sheet - it's always up to date with whatever keys are actually bound (including the QWERTZ/QWERTY layout choice from Home).
