0.2.3: saved games load, and the 16:9 freezes fixed
Spider-Man 2 (original Xbox, 2004) for Nintendo Switch: 0.2.3 makes saved games load (before, the game saved but always said "unable to load"), and fixes the 16:9 freezes. Your saves already on the card load too. Build it from your own copy of the game, from a disc image or the disc's files.
Note
Saves and freezes fixed; to be confirmed on a console. Saved games never loaded: the game showed "UNABLE TO LOAD SPIDER-MAN 2 SAVED GAME" and started over. And a tester's logs from 0.2.1 showed 16:9 freezing for up to 4 seconds at a time while the game waited for the SD card. Both are fixed, and checked on the PC test build. How it runs on a Switch still needs a console, so reports with the logs folder are very welcome. As with any homebrew, back up your SD card and use emuMMC.
Important
No game files here, and no .nro. You need your own Spider-Man 2 for the original Xbox (not PS2, GameCube or PC), and you build the port from it on your computer. Never share the .nro you build: it holds code made from the game.

New in 0.2.3
- Saved games load. The game saved fine, but loading always failed with "UNABLE TO LOAD SPIDER-MAN 2 SAVED GAME", so progress seemed lost every time you started the game. The game reads its save in small pieces and expects each read to still be in progress, as on the Xbox's hard disk; the port finished every read at once, and the game took that for the end of the file after only 1 KB of the 48 KB save. The saves were always written whole, so the ones already on your card load now: choose your save in the pause menu's SAVE/LOAD, or the game loads it when it starts.
- A copy of your saves, just in case. The port keeps a copy in
sdmc:/config/SpiderMan2Xbox/save/, outside its own folder, and brings it up to date a few seconds after each save. If an update ever replaces the wholeSpiderMan2Xboxfolder and takessave/with it, the copy is put back by itself at the next start. - The game never waits for the SD card because of the log. The game's threads now only hand their log lines to a thread of the port's own, which writes them to the card four times a second. Before, some lines were still written by the game itself, and when the card was slow the game stopped until it was done.
- A message repeated too often is cut short. After 100 times in 10 seconds, the rest are only counted, and one line says how many were left out. In 0.2.1, 16:9 wrote one message over 9,000 times in 80 seconds. Errors are always written.
- A crash keeps the last lines. If the game crashes, the lines still in memory go into the log before the crash report.
Also new since 0.2.1 (from 0.2.2)
- 16:9 no longer writes to the SD card every frame. This was the cause of the 16:9 slowdown in 0.2.0 and 0.2.1.
- New 4:3 decoration: suit sides. In the debug menu, Screen now has 4:3, suit sides: the spider web at the sides in the suit's colours, red with raised black webbing, a dark seam, and blue below it. It costs nothing while you play.
- Texture filtering's help now says that anisotropic filtering is a lot of work for the Switch's graphics chip in the city. If the frame rate drops, try Standard first.
Details in the changelog.
How to install
- Get your game as a disc image or as the disc's files (how).
- Unzip
SpiderMan2-2004-NX-0.2.3.zip. On Windows, double-clickbuild-windows.cmdand choose your game (the first time it sets up WSL and the tools: step by step). On Linux, runbash build.sh --copy-game "/path/to/Spider-Man 2.iso"(on Ubuntu or Debian it installs its tools the first time: step by step). - Copy the
switchfolder it made (inSD cardon Windows,out/sdon Linux) to the root of your SD card: your game is already in it. - Hold R while launching a game to open the Homebrew Menu, then choose Spider-Man 2 (Xbox). Not from the Album: it doesn't have enough memory.
Updating from 0.2.2, 0.2.1, 0.2.0 or 0.1.0: build 0.2.3 and copy its switch folder over the old one. game/, save/ and your settings stay (from 0.1.0 or 0.2.0, the stock clocks become Auto). The shaders already built are kept.
Known issues: web-swinging was reported to show only one animation, and building windows wrong reflections: neither is fixed yet, and a short video of each with the logs folder would show what to fix. Playing docked on a TV hasn't been confirmed on a console yet; the Auto clocks use more battery than the console's own; anisotropic filtering costs a lot of the graphics chip's time in the city; in Spanish, French, German and Italian the voices are in English (the disc only has the English ones); only the release with default.xbe SHA-1 853bcb253c5baea2d7e2d9b59e5888b4c87bb402 is supported.
Reporting: open an issue with the zipped switch/SpiderMan2Xbox/logs folder, the frame-rate counter's number and the debug menu settings you use (or your settings.ini), and say what happens: it doesn't start, an error screen, a freeze, or it's slow. Every 5 seconds the log writes perf: lines that say where the time goes on your console.

[!NOTE]

0.2.2: the 16:9 slowdown fixed, and suit-coloured 4:3 sides
Spider-Man 2 (original Xbox, 2004) for Nintendo Switch: 0.2.2 fixes the 16:9 slowdown, and adds a new 4:3 decoration, the web in the suit's colours. In 16:9 the port wrote a line to its log on the SD card several times a frame, and the game waited for every write. Build it from your own copy of the game, from a disc image or the disc's files.
Note
The cause of the 16:9 slowdown, fixed; to be confirmed on a console. 0.2.0 and 0.2.1 were reported slow, above all in 16:9. The cause found is fixed in this version, and it was checked on the PC test build. How it runs on a Switch still needs a console, so reports with the logs folder are very welcome. As with any homebrew, back up your SD card and use emuMMC.

New in 0.2.2
- New 4:3 decoration: suit sides. In the debug menu, Screen now has 4:3, suit sides: the spider web at the sides in the suit's colours, red with raised black webbing hanging from the top corners, a dark seam, and blue below it. Like the web sides, it is drawn once and costs nothing while you play.
- 16:9 no longer writes to the SD card every frame. The game resets its camera to 4:3 every frame, once for each of its drawing passes. Every time the port switched it back to 16:9, it wrote a line to the log, and on the Switch each line went to the SD card at once while the game waited. That happened several times a frame: a short session on the PC test build wrote over 20,000 of those lines. Now it is logged only the first few times.
- No log line makes the game wait for the SD card any more. Warnings and errors are still saved at once. Everything else is collected and written to the card every quarter of a second by a separate thread, so a burst of log lines can't slow the game down again. A crash still leaves its report.
- Texture filtering's help now says that anisotropic filtering is a lot of work for the Switch's graphics chip in the city. If the frame rate drops, try Standard first.
- A correction: 0.2.1's notes said the port's threads all shared one of the Switch's cores. That was wrong: the Switch's system library already lets every thread use all three cores. 0.2.1 only gave the renderer and the sound a starting core of their own.

0.2.1 – Faster: all three cores, Auto clocks, lighter 16:9 and 720p/1080p
Spider-Man 2 (original Xbox, 2004) for Nintendo Switch: 0.2.1 is about speed. The port now uses all three of the Switch's cores, sets the clocks for the game by itself, keeps the HUD 4:3 in 16:9 almost for free, and at 720p and 1080p enlarges only the main picture. Build it from your own copy of the game, from a disc image or the disc's files.
Note
Faster, to be confirmed on a console. 0.2.0 was reported unplayable on a Switch Lite. The fixes below were measured on the PC test build; how fast 0.2.1 runs on a Switch still needs a console, so reports with the logs folder are very welcome. As with any homebrew, back up your SD card and use emuMMC.

New in 0.2.1
- All three cores. A thread a Switch program starts may only run on the first core unless it is told otherwise, so the game, the renderer and the sound were all taking turns on one core, and the render thread gained nothing. Now the renderer has the second core, the sound and the port's own small threads the third, and the game the first, and each can move to an idle core.
- Auto clocks, the new default. The debug menu's clocks start on Auto: 1785 MHz CPU, 1600 MHz memory, and a GPU clock that follows the picture (460.8 MHz at 480p in handheld mode, 768 MHz at 720p and docked). These are all clocks Nintendo uses. If your
settings.inihad the old stock clocks, they switch to Auto; any clock you chose yourself stays. Stock is still there if you'd rather save battery. - 16:9 costs almost nothing now. To keep the HUD 4:3, 0.2.0 ran every small draw through the CPU, about 11 ms a frame on the PC test build and several times that on a Switch. Now it is about 0.3 ms.
- 720p and 1080p enlarge only the main picture. The game's small extra images (its shadows and glow passes) stay at their original size, so the extra work grows with the main picture only. The picture looks the same.
- 1080p is for docked play. In handheld mode it draws 720p, which is what the screen shows anyway.
- No new stutter after updating: the shaders your console built with 0.2.0 are kept.
- Lighter screen sides, faster texture checks, fewer writes to the SD card, and a more detailed
perf:line in the log, so a console's log can show what to speed up next.

0.2.0 – 720p/1080p, full screen 16:9 and vibration
Spider-Man 2 (original Xbox, 2004) for Nintendo Switch: 720p and 1080p, a full 16:9 screen without stretching, 4:3 with blurred or spider-web sides instead of black bars, sharper upscaling, anisotropic filtering, and vibration. Build it from your own copy of the game, from a disc image or the disc's files.
Note
New settings, to be tried on a console. 0.1.0 plays smoothly on a Switch Lite in handheld mode, and 0.2.0 starts with the same picture (480p, 4:3). The new resolutions, the 16:9 screen and the vibration were checked on the PC test build; how fast 720p and 1080p run on a Switch, and how the vibration feels, still need a console: reports are welcome. New in 0.2.0
All of these are in the debug menu (ZL + ZR + −), change at once while you play, and are saved in settings.ini.
- 720p or 1080p (Resolution). Every surface the game draws is made bigger alike, the movies included, so the whole picture is sharper. 720p fills the handheld screen pixel for pixel; 1080p is drawn bigger and shrunk, with smoother edges. More work for the GPU: if the frame rate drops, raise the GPU clock.
- Full screen 16:9, nothing stretched (Screen → 16:9 full screen). The game has a widescreen camera of its own that the retail game never switched on: the port turns it on, so you see more of the city at the sides, while the HUD, menus, text and movies keep their 4:3 shape in the middle.
- 4:3 with something at the sides instead of black bars: the picture itself blurred and dimmed, or a spider web.
- Sharper upscaling (Upscaling → Sharp, a Catmull-Rom filter) and anisotropic filtering (4x, 8x, 16x) for crisper movies and streets in the distance.
- Vibration: Off, Low, Medium (the default) or High, on Joy-Con or a Pro Controller. The game never vibrated before: it asks each controller which motors it has, and the answer said none. A rumble the game leaves on dies away after 2 seconds, so a controller never keeps shaking on its own, and none runs while the debug menu is open or in the HOME menu. The Switch Lite has no rumble motor of its own: Joy-Con or a Pro Controller paired with it vibrate.
- Swing logging: each web-swing writes
swing:lines to the log (which swing animations the game picks), for the report below.
Details in the changelog.
How to install
- Get your game as a disc image or as the disc's files (how).
- Unzip
SpiderMan2-2004-NX-0.2.0.zip.
Updating from 0.1.0: build 0.2.0 and copy its switch folder over the old one. game/, save/ and your settings.ini stay as they are (the new settings start at 480p, 4:3 black sides, smooth, standard filtering and medium vibration). The shaders are built again at the first start, so the first time through each place can stutter briefly again.
Known issues: web-swinging was reported to show only one animation, and building windows wrong reflections: neither is fixed yet, and a short video of each with the logs folder would show what to fix. Playing docked on a TV and saving haven't been confirmed on a console yet; in Spanish, French, German and Italian the voices are in English (the disc only has the English ones); only the release with default.xbe SHA-1 853bcb253c5baea2d7e2d9b59e5888b4c87bb402 is supported.
Reporting: open an issue with the zipped switch/SpiderMan2Xbox/logs folder, the frame-rate counter's number and the debug menu settings you use, and a photo or video if something looks wrong or it froze.

[!NOTE]

Spider-Man 2 (Xbox) for Switch 0.1.0: debug menu and your language"
Spider-Man 2 (original Xbox, 2004) for Nintendo Switch: a debug menu with a frame-rate counter and the Switch's clocks, the game in your console's language, a clean start screen and faster game code. Build it from your own copy of the game, from a disc image or the disc's files.
Warning
Test build, not yet played on a Switch. On the PC test build the game runs through its menus, cinematics and first missions in the city, in five languages. On a Switch it has not yet got past its start in testing, so how fast it runs there is not known yet: this version brings a frame-rate counter and the Switch's clocks to find out. Back up your SD card and use emuMMC. Testers are welcome.
Important
No game files here, and no .nro. You need your own Spider-Man 2 for the original Xbox (not PS2, GameCube or PC), and you build the port from it on your computer. Never share the .nro you build: it holds code made from the game.

New in 0.1.0
- A debug menu. Hold ZL + ZR and press − for the port's settings, over the game: the language, the Switch's CPU, GPU and memory clocks, a frame-rate counter, the sound volume, the renderer, the render thread and the start-up log. Each has a line of help, and the bottom line shows the frame rate of the moment. Saved in
settings.inibeside the.nro; the touch screen works too. - The Switch's clocks. Stock unless you change them, and only rates Nintendo's own performance profiles use (up to 1785 MHz CPU, 768 MHz GPU, 1600 MHz memory). The console's own clocks come back in the HOME menu and when you quit, and yours come back after docking or sleep. If the counter stays under 30, try a higher CPU clock first.
- A frame-rate counter in the black bar beside the picture: the frame rate, or also the time of a frame, the draw calls, the clocks and the memory.
- The game in your language. It follows the console's language: menus and subtitles in Spanish, French, German or Italian, from the texts on your disc (English for any other language). The voices stay in English, as the disc only has those. The debug menu can choose another language.
- A clean start screen: "Loading..." until the game draws, instead of the log scrolling by. The debug menu's start-up log brings the log back, for a photo when the game doesn't start.
- Faster: the game's thread needs about 14% less processor time a frame on the PC test build. The recompiled code now lets the processor keep the game's registers in its own between memory writes (about 5% less code for the Switch's processor), and recording each draw for the GPU costs less.
- A new icon in the Homebrew Menu: Spider-Man's mask with the game's logo.
- Easier to build. On Windows, double-click
build-windows.cmdand choose your game: it sets up WSL and the tools the first time, builds the.nro, and makes anSD cardfolder with the port and your game in it, ready to copy. On Linux, build.shinstalls its own tools on Ubuntu and Debian, and--copy-gameputs your game in the SD card folder too. - Saves in a folder of their own, like the NFS Most Wanted port:
save/holds your saves (easy to back up), andcache/the rest of the Xbox's hard disk and the shader list (safe to delete).

- A crash waiting to happen is gone. A system function the game uses to ask about a drive (its free space and details) had no implementation, and a call to it would have stopped the game. It now answers like the port's other drive queries.
From 0.0.9 (if you're coming from 0.0.8)
- The videos play at their real speed. The Activision and Treyarch logos, the intro and the cutscene videos ran twice too fast: the game shows a frame every two vertical blanks (30 a second) and the port showed one every blank. The whole game now keeps to that pace, as on the Xbox, which is also half the work for the GPU.
- Building shadows fall where they should, and half of the screen no longer goes dark. The game fills its shadow volumes in the GPU's 2X multisample mode, where the screen counts half as many pixels across; the port squeezed them into the left half and darkened that half of the screen.
- Shadow volumes drawn with the right vertices: a mesh placed far into a shared vertex buffer was drawn from the start of it.
- Fewer stutters the second time. The shaders the game needed are kept in
shaders.cachebeside the.nroand built again at the next start, a little each frame, so a place you already went through doesn't stall on them. The log has ahitch:line for each stutter left, with what took the time.

Known issues: how fast it runs on a Switch isn't known yet; the first time through a place can still stutter while shaders are built; only the release with default.xbe SHA-1 853bcb253c5baea2d7e2d9b59e5888b4c87bb402 is supported.
Reporting: open an issue with the zipped switch/SpiderMan2Xbox/logs folder (its perf: and hitch: lines say how fast it ran and where it stuttered), and a photo of the screen if something looks wrong or it froze.

- Descomprime

Spider-Man 2 (Xbox) for Switch 0.0.8: early test
Spider-Man 2 (original Xbox, 2004) for Nintendo Switch, now drawn by the Switch's graphics chip. Build it from your own copy of the game, from a disc image or the disc's files.
Warning
Early test, not playable yet. On the PC test build the game runs through its menus, cinematics and demos into the city. On a Switch it has not yet got past its start, and this is the first build that draws with the Switch's GPU, so how fast it runs there is not known yet.
Which file do I download?

The port and its builder. Unzip it and run bash build.sh "your game": it makes the .nro from your own copy and lays out the SD card folder. |
✅ Yes, this one |
| Source code (zip) | The same code, added by GitHub, without the version in the folder name. | ❌ No (same thing) |
| Source code (tar.gz) | The same code as a .tar.gz, added by GitHub. |
❌ No (same thing) |
There is no ready-made .nro to download, and there never will be: it would contain the game's code.
New in 0.0.8
- The Switch's graphics chip draws the game, every frame, through OpenGL (Mesa), instead of a still picture from the CPU every few seconds. The game's vertex programs and pixel combiners become shaders; its textures are decoded once and kept; its vertices go to the GPU as the game made them.
- A render thread: the graphics work runs beside the game, on another core.
- Spider-Man is drawn when you play (only his shadow was), and the opening cinematic's sky is no longer grey noise.
- The log says where the time goes: every 5 seconds a
perf:line with the frame rate and what each part of a frame cost. - Start-up switches for testing, held while the port starts: R the old CPU renderer, ZR no render thread, L no sound.
- The repository is now SpiderMan2-2004-NX.
Also in this release, from 0.0.7 (never published on its own): your disc image works as it is (.iso / .xiso, .cci, .cso, also split for FAT32), clear messages when something is wrong, and one command to build. Details in the changelog.
How to install
- Get your game as a disc image or as the disc's files (how).
- Unzip
