RH Filmic Colors

🎨 Color Behavior Engine for DaVinci Resolve

Note

RH Filmic Colors is a color behavior tool, not a look preset. It is designed to be used once per shot in a controlled position in the node tree to manage density, saturation, and tonal response.

1. Recommended Node Placement ✅

This tool expects scene-referred / log data. It must be placed correctly to function.

📍 Correct Order

  1. Input Transform / IDT (Log Space)
  2. Primary Balance (Exposure, Temp, Tint)
  3. 🔴 RH Filmic Colors
  4. Creative Look / Secondaries
  5. Output Transform / ODT

⚠️ Pre-DCTL Guidelines

+ ✅ DO: Offset, Exposure, White Balance, Primary Lift/Gamma/Gain
- ❌ AVOID: Heavy Contrast Shaping, Aggressive Saturation, Look LUTs

Why? The cleaner the input, the more predictable the density behavior.


🧩 Parallel Nodes: Keys & Secondaries

If you need isolated adjustments (Keys, Qualifiers): Use Parallel Nodes.

! TIP: Parallel nodes isolate the DCTL from secondary keys, preventing density distortion.

2. Using the Controls 🎛️

🌐 Global Controls

Primary adjustments for the entire image state.

Control Function
Global Blend 💧 Master opacity. 0.0 = Passthrough, 1.0 = Full Effect.
Global Sat / Hue 🎨 Applies clean HSV-based saturation and hue shifts to the whole image.
Shape Curve ☁️ Controls the response curve shape. (Enable Show Curve to visualize).
Global Exposure ☀️ Adjusts overall exposure density. Note: Image may clip if pushed too hard.

🔴🟢🔵 Vector Controls (RGB / CMY) 💠🟣🟡

Deep, independent control over specific color vectors using the 6-Vector Engine.

  1. Enable 6-Vector to activate.
  2. Adjust Hue, Saturation, and Density for each of the 6 primary vectors.

Density in this tool is Saturation Weighted. It deepens rich colors without affecting neutral skin tones.


🎞️ Film Density

# Global Density Bias

Controls how light interacts with the image overall. Use this to add "weight" or "thickness" to the image without crushing black levels.


🔀 Split Toning & Unite Options

Show Curve (Analysis)

Displays the internal response curve.

Useful for understanding where adjustments are acting.

Allows independent control of Shadows 🟦, Mids 🟩, and Highlights 🟥.

Recommended for:

  • Look Development, Split Toning and Controlled Color Shifts

⚫⚪ Unite at White / Black

Defines where color vectors converge at the dynamic range extremes.

Option Effect
Unite at White Recommended. Highlights fade to neutral white. Keeps speculars clean.
Unite at Black Shadows fade to neutral black. Prevents lifted/tinted blacks.

3. Visual Aids 👁️

Show Zone Masks helps visualize where your Split Toning allows adjustments.

4. Common Mistakes to Avoid 🚫

- ❌ Placing after a Look LUT or Output Transform.
- ❌ Using it as a "Look Generator" (it is a behavior engine).
- ❌ Stacking multiple instances (One per shot is sufficient).
- ❌ Doing heavy secondary keys BEFORE this node.

5. Suggested Workflow Summary 🧭

  1. Set Color Management / IDT.
  2. Balance Exposure / WB.
  3. Add RH Filmic Colors Node.
  4. Adjust Global Response / Density.
  5. Refine Vectors (if needed).
  6. Perform creative grading downstream.

Final Note: Evaluate this tool by how it behaves during grading, not just by how extreme the sliders can be pushed. It is a utility for chromatic preservation.
