@SgtBilko76 SgtBilko76 released this 27 Sep 07:57

Public beta of the VR port for standalone Meta Quest and Pico headsets. Unofficial fan project. This APK contains no game: you need your own dump of Crash Bandicoot NTSC-U (SCUS-94900) as .chd or .cue + .bin. Not affiliated with Sony, Activision or Naughty Dog.

What's new

  • Standalone VR on Meta Quest 2 / Pro / 3 / 3S. The launcher runs as a normal panel; Start Game switches to VR.
  • Stereo 3D: the world gets real depth from the PS1's own 3D data. Crash sits at screen depth, the level goes away behind him, and the HUD and menus stay flat.
  • Curved screen (or flat), sized to fill about 90° of view; passthrough to see your room around it.
  • Touch controllers with remappable buttons. A Bluetooth gamepad also works.
  • Faster: the Android app now uses the CoreCLR runtime, which runs the game code about twice as fast. First-time game preparation on the headset takes about half a minute instead of several minutes.
  • New 3x internal resolution option. The APK is now arm64-only (56 MB).

Install

  1. Enable developer mode and install CrashBandicoot-2.0.0-beta.1.apk with SideQuest or adb install. It appears under Unknown sources.
  2. Copy your disc dump to the headset (for example Download/) and allow All files access when asked.
  3. Select the disc, press Start Game, and put the headset on.

Upgrading from 1.9.x or an earlier test build: this APK is signed with a different key, so uninstall the old app first. Uninstalling deletes its data, including memory card saves (files/runtime/save/), so copy those off first if you want to keep them.

Controls

Left stick = D-pad, A/B/X/Y = Cross/Circle/Square/Triangle, triggers = L1/R1, grips = L2/R2, left menu button = Start, right stick click = Select.

In the headset: right stick up/down resizes the screen, right stick left/right moves the 3D depth plane, and left stick click toggles passthrough. The launcher's Controls screen sets curved/flat, 3D depth (0% = flat) and the button mapping.

Known limitations

  • Pico is untested. Pico support is included but no one has tried it yet. On an older PICO OS the VR view may close at once (adb logcat -s CrashXR shows xrCreateInstance failed). Reports are very welcome.
  • Sprites, menus, the map and videos have no 3D depth and sit at screen depth.
  • CoreCLR on Android is still marked experimental by .NET 10. Please report crashes with adb logcat.
  • Phones use the same APK; the VR parts only activate on a headset.
