OpenArena-VR v1.1.0 — PICO support

Standalone port of OpenArena 0.8.8 for Meta Quest (Quest 2 / 3 / 3S / Pro) and now also
PICO 4 / Neo 3. One APK covers both makes and has everything inside: no PC, no extra downloads,
no game files to copy.

New in 1.1.0

  • PICO 4 / Neo 3 support (untested on PICO hardware): the game no longer requires Meta-only
OpenXR extensions, and the PICO controllers get the same button layout as the Quest controllers.
Reports from PICO owners are very welcome.
  • Quest: no changes in gameplay; tested again on Quest 3.

Features

  • Full OpenArena 0.8.8: all maps, characters, weapons and game modes
  • Single player against bots, skirmish
  • Online multiplayer on real OpenArena servers (official server list), including pure servers and
mod servers (ratmod, Clan Arena, freeze tag, defrag, …); missing maps and mod files download automatically
  • Quake3Quest VR controls: 6DoF weapon aiming, weapon wheel, comfort options, VR HUD
  • VR crosshair coloured by health (style in Setup → Game Options)
  • VR on-screen keyboard for player name and other text fields

Install

  1. Install OpenArena-VR-v1.1.0.apk with SideQuest or adb install -r OpenArena-VR-v1.1.0.apk.
SideQuest is a Quest tool, so on PICO use adb or whichever sideloader you already use.
  2. Start OpenArena-VR (Quest: Library → Unknown Sources).
  3. First start: allow file access when asked. The game data (~400 MB) is unpacked to
/sdcard/OpenArenaVR/ once; this takes about a minute.

Updating from 1.0.0 keeps your settings and downloaded maps.

PICO notes

  • Needs PICO OS 5.9.0 or newer.
  • Untested: if the game does not start, or the controllers do nothing, please open an issue on GitHub.
adb logcat -s Quake3:* shows how far it gets.

Multiplayer tips

  • Multiplayer → Source Internet → Refresh.
  • Servers running mods download their files before joining (ratmod is about 100 MB).
The screen shows "0 of 0 bytes" for a few seconds before the progress appears.
Downloaded files are kept, so the next join is fast.
  • Mod servers run with the built-in VR game code: maps, textures and sounds of the mod
work, special mod rules or HUD features may not.

Known issues

  • Some servers refuse players with a high ping (e.g. US servers from Europe).
  • Rarely, a ratmod server join fails with "CL_ParseSnapshot: Invalid size … for areamask";
joining again or another server works.

Licences
