@SgtBilko76 SgtBilko76 released this 19 Oct 16:48

Changes since v0.1.6-beta

  • New, more detailed 3D cockpits from X-Wing Revival for the X-Wing, Y-Wing, A-Wing, B-Wing, TIE Fighter/Interceptor, TIE Bomber and Millennium Falcon, included in the APK. The small screens built into the Revival models are dark. All other craft (and gunner seats) keep X-Wing Alliance's own cockpits.

3D cockpit models: X-Wing Revival by Raptor007 and contributors (originally from the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade project).

Beta of OpenXWA VR: Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance running natively on Meta Quest 3 and PICO, built on OpenXWA with OpenXR + Vulkan.

You need your own copy of X-Wing Alliance (Steam or GOG). The APK contains no game data.

What works

  • Menus, briefings and cutscenes on a large virtual screen over passthrough
  • Head-tracked stereo 3D cockpit in flight (72 Hz), HUD floating in the cockpit
  • Touch controllers as a gamepad in flight, remappable in Options > Game Controller Options
  • Laser pointer + buttons in menus, the hangar and the in-flight options screen
  • Controller vibration

PICO

The same APK runs on PICO 4 / 4 Ultra / Neo 3 (untested on real PICO hardware). PICO needs PICO OS 5.9.0 or newer. Controller buttons are the same as on Quest; passthrough behind the menus is Quest-only. If it doesn't start on PICO, please open an issue with the output of adb logcat -s SDL/APP:*.

Install

  1. Install OpenXWA-VR-v0.1.7-beta.apk with SideQuest or adb install.
  2. Copy your whole X-Wing Alliance game folder to the Quest's internal storage and name it OpenXWA (so /sdcard/OpenXWA/STRINGS.TXT exists).
  3. Start OpenXWA VR from Unknown Sources and allow "access to all files" when asked.

Optional: to make hyperspace selectable in the controller options, add this line to /sdcard/OpenXWA/JOYSTICK.TXT:

!KEY_H!104 H Hyperspace

Controls

Hold the Meta button on the right controller to re-centre the view.

Menus / hangar: point and pull the trigger to click, right grip = right-click, A = Enter, B / Menu = back, Y = Space, left stick = arrows, left trigger = launch from the hangar.

Typing: a virtual keyboard appears whenever the game waits for text; point and pull the trigger on a key.

  • Signed with a debug key: uninstall before installing a build signed differently.
  • Ambient occlusion is off in VR; the GPU runs close to its limit in busy scenes.
