@SgtBilko76 SgtBilko76 released this 19 Oct 17:35

First beta of OpenXvT VR: Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (with Balance of Power) running natively on Meta Quest 3 and PICO, built on OpenXvT with OpenXR + Vulkan.

You need your own copy of X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (Steam). The APK contains no game data.

3D cockpit models: X-Wing Revival by Raptor007 and contributors (originally from the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade project), included in the APK.

What works

  • Menus, briefings and cutscenes on a large virtual screen over passthrough
  • Head-tracked stereo 3D space in flight (72 Hz)
  • 3D cockpits from X-Wing Revival for the X-wing, Y-wing, A-wing, B-wing, TIE Fighter, TIE Interceptor, TIE Bomber and Assault Gunboat; the Z-95, T-wing, R-41, TIE Advanced, TIE Defender and Missile Boat borrow the closest one. The original instruments float in front of you.
  • Touch controllers as a gamepad in flight, remappable in Settings > Controller
  • Laser pointer in menus and in the pause/settings screen; on-screen keyboard for the pilot name

PICO

The same APK is meant for PICO 4 / 4 Ultra / Neo 3 (untested on real PICO hardware). PICO needs PICO OS 5.9.0 or newer. Controller buttons are the same as on Quest; passthrough behind the menus is Quest-only. If it doesn't start on PICO, please open an issue with the output of adb logcat -s SDL/APP:*.

Install

  1. Install OpenXvT-VR-v0.1.0-beta.apk with SideQuest or adb install.
  2. Copy your whole Steam folder STAR WARS X-Wing vs TIE Fighter (about 400 MB) to /sdcard/OpenXvT on the Quest.
  3. Start OpenXvT VR from Unknown Sources and allow "access to all files" when asked.

Controls

Hold the Meta button on the right controller to re-centre the view.

Menus (concourse, briefing, options, the in-flight pause/settings screen): point with either controller, trigger = click, right grip = right-click, A = Enter, B / Menu = Escape, Y = Space, left stick = arrow keys.

Flight (the Touch controllers act as one gamepad; every button can be remapped in Settings > Controller):

Input Action
Left stick Pitch and yaw
Right stick left/right Roll
Right stick up/down Throttle lever (stays where you leave it)
Right trigger Fire
Left trigger Target / roll modifier
Right grip Target the craft in your sights
A / B Next target / cycle weapons (lasers / warheads)
X / Y Target my attacker / nearest fighter
Left stick click Cycle firing mode (link fire)
Right stick click Hyperspace
Menu Pause / settings
Left grip + A / B Laser / shield recharge rate
Left grip + X / Y Shield direction / laser energy to shields
Left grip + left trigger Tractor beam
Left grip + right grip Next target component
Left grip + right stick click Match target speed
Left grip + left stick click Nearest objective

Known limitations (beta)

  • Quest 3 tested only; PICO and multiplayer are untested.
  • The small screens built into the X-Wing Revival cockpits are dark.
  • The galaxy map and the hyperspace jump are shown flat.
  • Motion blur, temporal upscaling and ambient occlusion are off in stereo.
  • Signed with a debug key.
