MGS2 PCVR v0.4.0 — Huge performance increase in VR
MGS2 PCVR v0.4.0
Huge performance increase in VR
The playtest build of this code went from 43–56 fps with frame spikes of 33–50 ms to a steady 60 fps. Flat and mono modes also benefit. Results on other PCs will vary.
Other changes since v0.3.5
- PSG-1 / PSG-1T: in the first-person scope, hold the right grip to zoom in and the left grip to zoom out; zoom continues while the grip is held.
- Nikita: the launcher sits in your VR hand. Hold the right grip to open the native Nikita sight and fire with the trigger, then steer the missile with the left stick.
- Stinger: the launcher stays in your hand instead of opening in the zoomed view. Holding the right grip opens the sight.
- Thermal goggles (experimental): with the goggles in your inventory, press the left grip with your left hand near your left ear to toggle them.
- VR ammo counter (experimental): You can see the ammo when looking at your gun in VR just like the radar.
Retains v0.3.5 Game Over recovery, HUD/cutscene handling, persistent wrist alignment, SteamVR support and unlimited sessions. AER still alternates eyes.
Installation and limitations
Extract the mod ZIP beside the game executable with the game closed. Back up your existing mod files first. Keep dg_hand_calibration.bin to preserve your wrist alignment.
The Tanker chapter remains the focus. Plant/Raiden, hanging and grenades retain the limitations described in the README.
Build
Played and accepted this gameplay code on a playtest build (05F4F9F6): PSG-1 zoom, Nikita arm, firing, steering and menu, the Stinger in hand, and 60 fps in stereo. This release is *AEF2EC93.
MGS2 PCVR v0.3.5
MGS2 PCVR v0.3.5
Changes since v0.3.4
- Game Over controls: the displayed Continue screen accepts controller navigation and confirmation even when a scripted failure leaves cutscene flags set. The preceding death sequence stays blocked, and queued input is discarded when the screen closes. Addresses issue #4.
- HUD and cutscenes: VR HUD placement stops during cutscenes and stale gameplay states, restores the original GPU constants, and resumes when gameplay returns. The texture filter preserves eligible third-person HUD elements while excluding the scene image.
- Double image: Fixed the double image inside of headset from certain angles.
- Coolant spray: a held trigger reaches the native spray handler after the game's pad processing; release and stale input cancel the handoff.
- Coolant and directional microphone: standing movement and independent turning are supported, with corrected standing camera height and shoulder anchoring. Crouch, prone and scripted microphone actions retain their native behavior.
- USP/SOCOM reload: reload and mobile-tool motion now share their hook so one feature no longer prevents the other from installing. Native ammunition bookkeeping and reload timing are preserved.
- Hand attachment: improves selection of verified rigid weapon attachments, including the HF Blade, when the draw matrix lags behind the tracked hand.
Retains v0.3.4 persistent wrist alignment, SteamVR support, unlimited sessions and swapchain resize recovery. AER still alternates eyes; this release does not claim to fix all stereo ghosting or animation-speed problems.
Installation and limitations
Extract the mod ZIP beside the game executable with the game closed. Back up your existing mod files first. Keep dg_hand_calibration.bin to preserve your wrist alignment.
The Tanker chapter remains the focus. The previously reported first-person locker-entry problem remains unverified; use Third Person if affected.
MGS2 PCVR v0.3.4
MGS2 PCVR v0.3.4
Playable on PS VR 2 / SteamVR.
Includes the persistent hand-alignment changes from candidate 0237AC10:
- Automatic defaults position the hands from controller tracking.
- Right trigger + B while unarmed saves a one-time wrist-alignment override for both hands. Hold both hands in a comfortable neutral pose with both controllers tracked. A later deliberate calibration replaces the override.
- The override persists across game restarts in
dg_hand_calibration.bin. - Weapon changes, animations, first/third-person switches, new levels, cutscenes and tracking loss preserve the calibration/default.
Native animations can temporarily take control of the hands, and reach limits still apply. Headset testing remains necessary to confirm the visible result across those transitions.
Known regression: this release breaks entering lockers from first-person (FPS) mode.
Retains the v0.3.3 SteamVR gameplay Waiting fix, unlimited sessions (seconds=0) and synchronized projection-swapchain resize recovery with partial-creation cleanup.
Build: 0237AC10. SHA256: 0237AC10E1BE3136A565945E87C156CC938F5ED995F1B421BA5218F382D2C7EE.
MGS2 PCVR v0.3.3
MGS2 PCVR — v0.3.3
Playable on PS VR 2 / SteamVR.
What changed
- Fixed the SteamVR gameplay “Waiting” problem caused by graphics-device initialization.
Install or update
Download MGS2-PCVR-v0.3.3-62E9EEAF.zip below. Close the game and back up existing mod files before extracting beside METAL GEAR SOLID2.exe.
Existing users can replace dg_hook.asi and set seconds=0 in their existing dg_hook.on to keep their settings. The included loaders are unchanged from the previous release.
Use SteamVR as the active OpenXR runtime for PS VR2. For Quest Link / Air Link, use Meta's OpenXR runtime. The README control table uses Quest button labels; PS VR2 assignments can differ through SteamVR.
This remains a Tanker-focused mod. Plant/Raiden, hanging and grenades retain the limitations described in the README.
MGS2 PCVR — Beta v0.3.2
MGS2 PCVR — SteamVR hotfix and unlimited sessions
Version v0.3.2-beta.3-rc.1, build 4F95FE0F, based on public beta 479DF688.
This is a test candidate for issue #2, not a confirmed fix for SteamVR's gameplay Waiting screen. The supplied log shows different resolutions across separate runtime startups, not an observed resize inside one startup.
Changes
seconds=0disables the automatic session timer. The supplied configuration now uses zero. Positive values retain timed sessions. When preserving older settings, change seconds after installing this binary; older binaries do not support unlimited mode.- Projection swapchains rebuild using one synchronized size snapshot, including when Present changes size during creation. Partial creation is cleaned up before retrying.
Installation and test
Download MGS2-PCVR-v0.3.2-beta.3-rc.1-4F95FE0F.zip. Close the game and back up existing mod files. Existing beta users can replace only dg_hook.asi and change seconds=0 in their existing dg_hook.on; loaders and other settings are unchanged.
For issue #2: start a fresh game process, reach affected Tanker gameplay promptly, wait 15 seconds, open codec for 15 seconds, close it and wait another 15 seconds. Exit the game, review the log for personal information and attach the new dg_hook.log to the issue. Report what the headset shows at each step. Do not change resolution or runtime during this first test.
MGS2 PCVR — Public Beta
MGS2 PCVR — Public Beta
Welcome to the first public beta of MGS2 PCVR, an unofficial PC VR mod for METAL GEAR SOLID 2: Sons of Liberty — Master Collection Version.
Tested on Meta Quest 3 with Touch Plus controllers. Requires the Steam game, a Windows gaming PC and a working OpenXR PC VR connection.
What to expect
- Headset tracking and motion-controller controls, using AER (Alternate Eye Rendering).
- Switch between VR and Third Person with A; hold Y to recenter.
- Wrist radar and LIFE display, with controller menus for weapons and items.
- A Tanker-focused beta. Plant / Raiden support is still in development.
Download and install
Download MGS2-PCVR-v0.3.1-beta.3-479DF688.zip under Assets below. Close the game, back up any existing mod files, and extract the ZIP beside METAL GEAR SOLID2.exe. Launch through Steam with your headset connected.
GitHub's automatic Source code downloads are for contributors and are not the playable mod package.
Read the setup guide and controls before playing.
Before you play
- One-hour VR session limit: save and restart before the hour is up, or close the game and increase
seconds=3600indg_hook.onbefore playing. The game itself stays open when the mod's session ends. - Security cameras: switch to Third Person to get past camera sections.
- Hanging and moving while hanging: experimental; use Third Person.
- Grenades: not supported in VR yet.
- Plant / Raiden: not ready for a complete VR playthrough. Weapon and interaction support is still being developed.
- AER: eyes update on alternating frames, which can cause ghosting or judder. At 60 game frames per second, each eye receives roughly 30 fresh images per second.
