Release list
v2.00
Same old Rec Room builds as 1.0.0 (2019 to April 8, 2020), still offline and single player. The big ones this time are Luigi, free roam that doesn't swap Mario out anymore, his shadow, rumble, and a pause screen that does something.
Download
Grab mario-for-recroom-2.00-0cfcdee.zip below, unzip it somewhere normal (not Program Files, and not from inside the zip window), run Start-Mario.cmd and press P. If you're on 1.0.0, unzip into a new folder and copy your old mario.ini over. From this version on it carries over by itself.
You still need your own SM64 (USA) ROM and an old Rec Room client. INSTALL.md has how to get one. BepInEx 6 and Super Luigi 64 v2.0 (by Cjes and CyberTanuki, unchanged) are in the zip.
New
- Luigi. Pick him on the Mario tab. He looks and sounds like Luigi but moves like Mario, since libsm64 runs its own moveset.
- One more character, not in the zip. This copy is personalized.
- Free roam: every 100 m the centre of SM64's world moves to Mario between two frames, so there's no edge to run into sideways. The ceiling is still about 150 m up.
- Mario's round SM64 shadow, so you can see where you're landing. It fades out as he goes up.
- Xbox controllers rumble when he gets hurt, dies or ground pounds.
- Esc (Start on a pad) shows PAUSE now. While paused, C / RB resets the camera and R / LT / RT respawns him at the last solid ground, with whatever health he had.
- The pause screen and the Mario Controls menu show your controller's buttons if that's what you touched last, and keyboard keys otherwise.
- Skins: put a
.marioskinin theskinsfolder and it shows up on the Mario tab. None come with the mod. - Camera settings. Flip either axis, change the speed.
- The launcher can be recoloured, its tabs moved or hidden, and there's a reset to defaults.
Changed
- Up looks up now. If you liked it the other way, it's "Inverted" on the Mario tab.
- The native library reads Mario's model, sounds and animations from whatever ROM it's given, which is how Luigi works. Normal ROM, normal Mario.
- Settings get copied to
%APPDATA%\MarioForRecRoom, so the next version starts with them.
Fixed
- Hacks with bigger sound codebooks than SM64's played loud noise instead of voices.
- A bad patch or skin file gives an error now instead of a crash, and a broken skin doesn't stop Mario from loading.
- Launcher stuff: gradient colours with #, skin names with # or ;, the last tab not saving on close,
--configtouching the%APPDATA%copy, and the patch search hanging on slow drives. - Fake "possible void" log lines on slopes, some memory churn, and the HUD not cleaning up after a failed load.
Everything is in CHANGELOG.md.
What I tested
In the game: the shadow, the pause screen, an Xbox controller (rumble and the button names), the controls menu, and the other character.
Not yet: Luigi, skins, the camera settings, free roam past 100 m, PlayStation and N64 pads.
Known limits
- Only the Sept 9, 2019 build has been tried.
- Rumble is Xbox-type pads only.
- Route fights are still unreliable.
- Windows, flat screen, no VR.

v1.0.0
First public release. Super Mario 64's Mario (libsm64, real N64 physics) in old IL2CPP builds of Rec Room, from 2019 up to April 8, 2020. Offline and single player; the mod never talks to Rec Room's servers.
Download
mario-for-recroom-9d063bb.zip below. Unzip it into a normal folder (not Program Files, and not from inside the zip window), double-click Start-Mario.cmd, let the setup wizard find your files, then press P. Steam needs to be running.
You supply: Windows 10/11 64-bit, your own Super Mario 64 (USA) ROM, and your own old Rec Room client (2019 to April 8, 2020). docs/INSTALL.md shows how to check a build and download it with SteamDB and DepotDownloader.
In the zip: the launcher (with .NET built in), the mod, the native Mario library, and BepInEx 6 (be.788, unmodified, with its licences).
Which Rec Room builds
- Tested on the Sept 9, 2019 build (depot 471711, manifest 3817258843939969587). Other builds from 2019 to April 8, 2020 install as compatible build; parts of the mod may not fit them, and the game log says which.
- Before December 14, 2018 Rec Room was a Mono game: refused. The December 2018 IL2CPP builds use Unity 2018.1, which BepInEx 6 can't load (tested): refused.
- From April 20, 2020 Rec Room launched through Easy Anti-Cheat, later its own Referee: refused. The mod never works around anti-cheat. Your live Steam install is always refused too.
Features
- The Rec Center, any other room of your build, and the quests it has (up to all five: Golden Trophy, Jumbotron, Crimson Cauldron, Lost Skulls, Crescendo)
- Mario's punches, kicks and stomps hurt quest enemies, and their attacks hurt him
- SM64 lava: burn hop, smoke and health loss instead of the quest ending on contact
- Picking up, carrying and throwing buttons, pots, bombs, torches, lighters, cannon handles, jigsaw pieces and pallets
- Wing cap, optional constant flying, and a 150 m world edge marked with orange construction tape
- Controllers on SM64's N64 layout (mapping only; no real pad tested yet)
- Casual mode: more reach, softer knockback
- Routes: JSON files that make Mario play by himself with controller input only
Launcher
- Adds
steam_appid.txt(Rec Room's app id) so a freshly downloaded client starts outside the Steam library; uninstall removes it - Uses a BepInEx 6 that's already in your client instead of refusing it
- Moves an old BepInEx 5 or half-removed loader into a backup folder instead of deleting it
- Makes a
.z64copy of a.v64/.n64ROM; your file is left as it is - Switches Doorstop back on if it's off, and back off on uninstall
- Repairs a broken BepInEx interop cache before the game starts
- Mario only appears when Rec Room is started from the launcher menu
- Restores your Rec Room settings when the game closes
Known limits
- Builds other than the tested one haven't been tried in the game yet.
- Route fights are unreliable (a Golden Trophy route fight still times out).
- Windows only, flat screen, no VR.
