02. Problem Statement

When people sign up for a new online service (an app or a website), most users don’t bother reading the terms & conditions or privacy policies. Even when they do, these documents are often written in complex legal language that is difficult to understand.

This leads to:

  • Companies exploiting users’ data through vague or misleading clauses.
  • Increased risks of data leaks, spam calls, and unauthorized data sharing.
  • Users unknowingly approving policies that negatively impact their privacy.

📊 According to surveys:

  • 60% of Indian adults and 90% of adults worldwide fear unauthorized data access.
  • Only 11% of users actually understand what privacy policies mean.

03. Solution

Privofy is a web-based privacy policy analysis platform that empowers users to understand what they are agreeing to before accepting any terms.

Users can:

  • Upload a privacy policy file.
  • Search for a company’s privacy policy from a database.
  • Fetch a privacy policy directly using a public URL.

An AI model then:

  • Analyzes the policy in depth.
  • Explains it in simple, non-legal language.
  • Highlights key risks and protections.
  • Assigns a safety score out of 100.
  • Identifies Red Flags (potential concerns) and Green Flags (positive practices).
  • Supports multilingual translation and text-to-speech (TTS) for accessibility.

Privofy is aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by promoting transparency, accountability, and informed digital consent.


04. Implementation

  1. Users authenticate and access a unified dashboard.
  2. They can choose one of three ways to load a privacy policy:
    • Upload a document.
    • Search for a company’s policy from the database.
    • Fetch policy content using a public URL.
  3. Once the policy content is loaded, users press Analyze Policy button.
  4. The AI generates structured insights, including:
    • Impact on user data privacy and security.
    • Practical implications for users.
    • A safety score based on a defined scoring rubric.
    • Clear Red Flags and Green Flags.
      • A concise policy summary.
  5. Each insight block can be:
    • Translated independently into the user’s preferred language.
    • Listened to via text-to-speech.
    • Toggled between original English and translated versions.
  6. Users can retranslate content at any time, with translations updated dynamically.
