What's Changed

With MGSHDFix 4.0.0, MGS2 is effectively restored back to its original pre-HD Collection state.

All of MGS2's graphical effects that Bluepoint left unimplemented (there was a ton of things that were literally left marked as "BLUEPOINT TODO" still in the source code that are still untouched to today) have been fully restored (either through the game's own rendering system, or in some cases, through modern custom D3D11 recreations.)

  • Hopefully Konami fixes a number of these issues one day. In many cases, a number of the effects that have been broken for 15+ years are due to incorrect ifdef statements sending the effects down the wrong rendering path, and are trivial enough to fix officially in the source that Konami literally just has to change a few 1's to 0's in a few spots to get a bunch of broken effects working again...

MGS3 also got some love of course too, did you know the original game had film grain during darker cutscenes? Well that's fixed too! :3

Here's a bunch of screenshots with fixed Depth of field + various other fixes thrown in!

[Brackets denote what version the bug was introduced, ie Sons of Liberty, Substance, HD Collection, Master Collection]

🔧 Shared Engine Fixes:

👁 Fixed & restored depth of field rendering [2011 HDC]

  • Camera focus / depth of field now scales properly with resolution.
  • The close-up camera blur / depth of field system, which was outright disabled in both MGS2 & MGS3 by Bluepoint with the 2011 HD Collection, has also been fully fixed / restored.
  • MGS3's depth of field was upgraded to utilize a gaussian mip pyramid to clean up the vanilla DoF's sampling artifacting. (This will likely be backported to MGS2 at some point in the future.)
  • MGS3's depth of field fix may be a bit performance-heavy for minimum spec hardware. This option can be toggled off under the "restoration" tab. Performance will be further optimized in the future. ♥

⏱️ Fixed MGS2 & MGS3's in-game timer not pausing during loading screens [2011 HDC]

  • Bluepoint refactored the loading system with the 2011 HDC and accidentally removed the loading timer pause flag being assigned at the start of level loading.
    • The flag was still being cleared properly at the end of loading.
  • This fix makes the in-game timer match 1:1 with the original Substance & Sons of Liberty timer behavior.
  • This can be disabled for those that want the vanilla / broken behavior.

🔊 Fixed MGS2 & MGS3's audio reverb [2011 HDC]

  • Reverb has always been present, but the volume for it was so low that it was effectively silent.
  • Reverb volume has been boosted as a baseline fix, and the volume is now user-adjustable.

🥽 Fixed MGS2 & MGS3's blind rendering (horizontal lines on Codec portraits & when using the nightvision / thermal goggles) not scaling with resolution

  • The height of these lines was also corrected to match their PS2 scaling / match with PCSX2.

🔋Improved Steam Deck/Handheld CPU power draw, again! https://imgur.com/a/5Jr5IG7

✨ Shared New Features:

🖼 SMAA (Screen Morphological Anti-Aliasing) support has been added for MGS2 & MGS3.

☀️ Gamma correction has been added for all games.

  • This feature corrects colors to appear more vibrant & makes some lower blacks even deeper, as they would have appeared on an actual CRT screen.

Added an option (MGSHDFix Internal tab) to start MGS2 & MGS3 in their developer menu level select screens

🌐 String Replacements & Retranslation Support

  • All strings (ie captions in CODEC calls, cutscenes, voicelines, text in the in-game books, menu text, ect) can now be changed freely without having to edit any actual game files.

  • Typo / grammar fixes have been applied to over 150 strings already across all of the game's languages.

  • A translation file modloading system, along with a custom string editor for every text line in each game (70000+ for MGS2, and 81000+ for MGS3) are currently being worked on.

    • The goal of this system is to allow translation mod makers to simply drop a single .txt file in the game's folder to replace every line of text in the game without having to reupload massive .SDT files.

Added an option to restore all PS2 memory card messages

Speedrunner Overlay

  • Statistics overlay showing current stage duration, total in-game time, and real time since the start of the run.
  • This overlay will also show all ranking information (ie Kills, alerts, shit count, ECT) during the pause screen.

✨ Metal Gear / Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake - New Features:

📺 Added an option to correct the game to 4:3 aspect ratio.

  • (The game was using the MSX2's raw output aspect ratio of 64:53 instead of proper 4:3.)

Added an option to crop the overscan areas at the top & bottom of the screen.

🛠️MGS2 Restoration & Fixes:

🎬 Restored MGS2’s missing and broken PS2 visual effects [2011 HDC]

The following restored effects were broken, left unimplemented, or just outright disabled by Bluepoint:

  • On-demand contrast and color-filter effects used in atleast thirteen cutscenes.
  • Crossfade camera transitions
  • Cinematic overcranked (slow-motion) camera transitions (Plant opening, Fortune's intro cutscene, several others)
  • PS2 Motion Blur / Motion Trails
    • For folks with motion sickness or don't like the original motion blur, it can be disabled under the "restoration" tab.
  • Out-of-focus concentration blur
  • Heat mirage effects on Strut A's roof.
  • Heat distortion effects in numerous cutscenes (helicopter heat exhaust, heat mirage effects during Solidus cutscenes, etc.)
  • Multiple underwater screen distortion effects
  • Bloodstains on guards & RAY units when shot
  • Scope distortion when using the PSG-1 / PSG-1T
  • Water droplets on the camera during first-person-view cutscenes
  • Several invisible water splash effects (ie: Tanker ending -> Snake splashing water around with his gun, flooding overlay after screen explosion.)

🪪 Fully restored all Name, Date of Birth, and Bloodtype entry screens, and the end-game dogtag. [2011 HDC]

  • The standalone "Afevis Dogtag Restoration" (MGS2-Dogtag-Restoration.asi) mod's functionality has also been fully integrated into MGSHDFix.
    • Do make sure to remove the old mod, otherwise crashing on start-up will likely occur.

  • Fixed effect speeds [2011 HDC & 2003 PC Substance]
    • Tons of effects that were ending early / running at double speed have been adjusted back to their correct PS2 timings.
    • If you see any more, please report them so we can fix them! ♥
  • Fixed bullet casings not rendering at times during cutscenes. [2002 Xbox Substance]
  • Fixed the Shell 1 Core Parrot's radar cone not correctly following the movement of the Parrot's head. [2011 HDC]
  • Fixed the Colonel's retro Ghost Babel & MGS1 sprites not rendering properly during some codec calls. [2011 HDC]
  • Fixed MGS2 titlecard during Tanker intro being incorrectly positioned when playing in Letterbox mode. [2011 HDC]
  • Fixed cigarette smoke in Tanker intro not acting like smoke. [2001 SoL]
  • Fixed RAY's eye trails being misaligned during final Arsenal cutscene. [2011 HDC]
  • Added an option to make punches count as non-lethal damage against Vamp instead of doing lethal damage. [2001 SoL]
  • Restored alternative voice lines when Snake is taking photos in Holds 3. [2002 Xbox Substance]
  • Restored the Main Menu's voiceovers & Action Level selection screens. [2002 Korea SoL]
  • Fixed Fortune's railgun having corrupt geometry (which looked like a smoke cloud) when fired. [2011 HDC]
  • Fixed Fortune's railgun arcing effects not scaling with resolution. [2011 HDC]
  • Fixed incorrect lighting on several posters & lockers. [2011 HDC]
  • Corrected a camera jitter issue during in-game demos (such as viewing the Soldier at the very start of Plant) which was obvious at high resolution [2001 SoL]
  • Fixed model lighting bound calculation, which was broken by the 2011 HD Collection. [2011 HDC]
    • This broke lighting on numerous models throughout the game
    • Notably, this caused a green tint on the computers in the Shell 1 Core B2 Computer Room
    • It also caused numerous models throughout Arsenal to appear unshaded altogether.
  • Fixed 60 FPS camera-sync issue which caused the Kasatka's rotor blades to appear static / not moving during cutscenes. [2011 HDC]
  • Fixed the laser on several guns being incorrectly positioned compared to their laser aiming module. [2001 SoL]
  • Fixed Raiden's holster not updating when the M9 is equipped. [2001 SoL]
  • Corrected Snake's hair rendering order. Snake's hair is no longer see-through / rendering behind itself. [2001 SoL]
    • This removes the need for the Snake hair fix mod, as the issue is now outright fixed using the vanilla textures. ♥
  • Fixed Snake visibly teleporting during the Tanker intro cutscene. [2001 SoL]
  • Fixed Snake's optical camo breaking effect's rotation during the Tanker intro cutscene. [2011 HDC]
  • Fixed MG Ray's eye sprites being massive / having blown out bloom. [2011 HDC]
  • Fixed a number of skyboxes, rain, sun god-rays, and lens flare effects rendering in incorrect positions while playing with fullscreen cutscenes. [2011 HDC]

✨ MGS2 New Features:

🌡 Thermal goggle palette swapping:

  • A completely new feature! MGSHDFix now lets you swap the thermal goggle palette in realtime between Substance's rainbow colors, Sons of Liberty's Red-hot/Terminator vision thermals, Splinter Cell Blacklist thermals, white hot, or black hot.
  • You can swap palettes using Numpad 7 while thermals are equipped.

All NPCs can now be forced to always use their highest quality polygon / LOD model.

Added an option to render shell casings at all distances.

Added an option to have shadow resolution (which was still hard-coded to the PS2's 256x256 size) increase dynamically with game resolution.

Added an option to restore the original radar rotation from 2001 US PS2 Sons of Liberty.

Added an option to enable radar in Snake Tales.

🧩 BP_Asset / Manifest Mod Loading Support

  • Added support for loading additional bp_asset.txt files from a stage's folder, having its entries overload the original manifest without having to overwrite vanilla files.
  • An example of this can be found in the MGS2 Community bugfix compilation's stage files. :

Added an option to have a custom lifebar name.

🪪 Added an option to have the lifebar name reflect the current player character's name, like in MGS3/MGS4.

Added an option to restore Sons of Liberty's elevator glitch, for speedrunners that want to practice old strats that were patched out. :3

Added an option to restore the Colonel's retro Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake sprite during some codec calls, which was cut from the final game but still present in the data files.

🐛 MGS2 Community Bugfix Compilation joint fixes:

  • Made Snake's holster functional. (His holster always had an extra handgun in it, even when unarmed.)

  • Fixed hostages having mismatched skin color on their hands.

  • Fixed title screen's "2" not swapping colors with game completions.

  • Added an option to use the Colonel's Subsistence Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake sprite instead of the classic MSX2 sprite.

  • Fixed Solidus not being visible when viewed from a malfunctioning RAY unit's POV.

  • Fixed a broken voice line in Deck 2's pipe-falling mini-cutscene. [2001 PS2]

Installation

🚩 If updating from a previous version of MGSHDFix:

  • Delete d3d11.dll from your game folder.

Steps:

  1. Download the file marked MGSHDFix_v4.0.0.zip from the "Assets" section below.
  2. Extract the contents of the release zip into your game folder.
    • (e.g., steamapps\common\MGS2 or steamapps\common\MGS3 for Steam.)
  3. Set both "Internal Resolution" & "Internal Upscaling" to Default / Original in the game's launcher. (Resolution is entirely handled by MGSHDFix.)
  4. Launch the MGSHDFix Config Tool (in the game's /plugins folder) to generate a settings file if you're installing the mod for the first time.

Steam Deck/Linux Additional Instructions

🚩 These steps are only needed if you’re on Steam Deck/Linux. Skip if you’re using Windows.

  • Open up the game properties of either MGS2/MGS3 in Steam and add the following line to the launch options:

     `WINEDLLOVERRIDES="wininet,winhttp=n,b" %command%`

  • When opening the MGSHDFix Config Tool on Steam Deck/Linux, a Proton Tricks Wine Prefix window will pop up. Select any game and hit "OK" to open the MGSHDFix Config Tool.

    • If you do not have any games in the list, or the MGSHDFix Config Tool fails to launch, add it as a non-steam game and launch it once through Steam to generate a new Proton Tricks Wine Prefix entry.
    • You can remove the Config Tool from your Steam game list and launch it directly after generating this prefix.

Configuration

  • See MGSHDFix Config Tool.exe in the /plugins folder to adjust settings for the fix.
