Placeholders

Built-in placeholders use curly braces: {placeholder}. They work in death messages, titles, subtitles, action bars and epic effects.

Built-in placeholders

Placeholder Description Example
{victim} Victim name; uses the Essentials nickname when available Steve
{victim_username} Raw victim username Steve
{killer_name} Responsible entity name (player nickname or formatted mob name); Unknown if nobody is responsible Alex, Creeper
{killer_username} Raw killer username for players, or lower-case entity name Alex
{killer_displayname} Killer display name (same source as {killer_name}) Alex
{killer_source} Direct damage source Arrow, TNT, Creeper
{cause} Bukkit damage cause FALL
{world} World where the death happened world_nether
{distance} Distance between victim and killer, one decimal; 0.0 when there is no killer 12.4
{biome} Readable biome name Nether Wastes
{victim_weapon} Item in the victim's main hand (custom name when set) Diamond Sword
{victim_effects} Active potion effects Strength, Speed
{time} Server time formatted with time-format 21:45:03
{x} / {y} / {z} Block coordinates of the death 128 / 64 / -32
{cost} Configured death message cost, 0 when disabled 10.0

Notes:

  • Placeholders are resolved only when they appear in the selected message, so unused ones cost nothing.
  • Killer placeholders fall back to Unknown when there is no responsible entity.
  • {victim} and {killer_name} use Essentials nicknames automatically when Essentials is installed.

PlaceholderAPI

If PlaceholderAPI is installed, any %expansion_placeholder% is expanded for the player who died:

default-messages:
  - "&c{victim} &7(balance: &e%vault_eco_balance%&7) has died."
  • The expansion must be installed in PlaceholderAPI.
  • Both built-in {placeholders} and PlaceholderAPI %placeholders% can be mixed in the same message.
  • If PlaceholderAPI is missing, %...% text is left untouched.
  • PlaceholderAPI is optional and detected at runtime.

Examples

default-messages:
  - "&c{victim} &4was slain by &c{killer_name}&4 at &e{x}, {y}, {z}&4."
  - "&7[{time}] &c{victim} &7died in &e{world} &7(&e{biome}&7)."

cause-messages:
  PROJECTILE:
    - "&c{victim} &4was shot by &c{killer_name}&4 from &e{distance} &4blocks away."
  FALL:
    - "&c{victim} &4fell to their death in &e{biome}&4."

Conditions

The same placeholders can be used in conditional messages:

- condition: "{distance} > 10"
message: "&c{victim} &4was sniped from afar!"
- condition: "{victim_effects} contains 'Poison'"
  message: "&c{victim} &2died of poison."
