Click a connection to edit its color and annotation in one dialog. The dialog now matches the main window's glass styling, with a single annotation field. Existing evidence remains stored, and annotation drafts still survive selection changes and save before opening the reader.

Linux DEB/AppImage, Windows Setup and macOS users can upgrade from Help → Check for Updates…. Local papers, notes and sign-in data are preserved. Windows portable ZIP users upgrade manually. The macOS community build is ad-hoc signed; Windows is unsigned. First-launch operating-system prompts still apply.

PaperCanvas Linux x64 now supports Ubuntu 20.04, alongside 22.04 and 24.04. ROS1 users can keep their existing system and ROS/Python environment. Linux packages are built on Ubuntu 20.04, with a glibc 2.31 compatibility check covering every shipped ELF binary. The Electron backend builds independently of the legacy Tauri/WebKit shell.

CI covers frontend and Rust tests, packaged Windows/macOS desktop tests, Ubuntu 20.04 container tests for both DEB and AppImage, and the same Linux packages on Ubuntu 22.04/24.04. Linux update tests reject damaged downloads, install, relaunch and verify retained data. Ubuntu 20.04 container validation shares the host kernel; early user trial feedback is positive, but hardware graphics, input methods and live ChatGPT sign-in vary by machine. Ubuntu 20.04 compatibility is maintained by this project, outside Electron's current official distribution support policy.

Open PaperCanvas from the application menu, or run paper-canvas as your normal desktop user. The installer sets up the desktop icon and the application-specific AppArmor profile on Ubuntu 24.04. Node.js, Rust and WebKit development packages are not needed to run the release.

Updates and data / 更新与数据

• Windows Setup and macOS: use Help → Check for Updates…. Windows portable ZIP users replace the program manually.
• Linux, starting with 0.2.8: Help → Check for Updates… downloads and verifies the newer .deb or AppImage. Choose Restart and install to save, install and reopen, or Later to keep working. Ubuntu requests system authorization; AppImage needs a writable file and folder.
• Linux data is stored at $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/com.papercanvas.desktop, defaulting to ~/.config/com.papercanvas.desktop. Both formats share the library and Chromium sign-in profile.

Validation / 验证

The release workflow builds Windows, macOS and Linux natively. It checks the frontend, desktop bridge and Rust backend, tests the installed .deb and AppImage on Ubuntu 22.04, and installs the same .deb on Ubuntu 24.04. Update tests reject bad checksums, reinstall packages from a local feed and verify relaunch and data retention. Desktop checks cover PDF interactions, notes and reading-position persistence, clipboard text/images and embedded-view isolation using synthetic PDFs and a local chat fixture.

PaperCanvas 0.2.7 gives large paper networks more room and expands the README walkthrough.

• Canvas: pinch and zoom controls now reach 5% (previously 20%), with the same 200% upper limit. At the minimum zoom, the same window covers four times the width and height of the previous limit.
• Demo: the English and Chinese READMEs now show real arXiv PDFs alongside the actual embedded ChatGPT website, a live paper discussion, and copying the reply's Markdown outline into the interactive mind map.
• Recording: uses a separate signed-out profile; personal libraries and accounts are not included.

PaperCanvas 0.2.6 adds native desktop updates and complete English / 简体中文 user guides.

• macOS: Help → Check for Updates opens a native Sparkle window to download, verify, install, and relaunch. Signed feeds and Ed25519-signed archives work with the community ad-hoc-signed build.
• Windows: use the Setup installer for application-managed updates. The portable ZIP remains available for manual upgrades.
• Reading: wait for the lazy page layout before restoring the saved within-page PDF position.
• Documentation: separate English and Simplified Chinese READMEs with language links, detailed existing-account password sign-in, Space connection mode, manual paper-title copying/pasting, reading, notes, mind maps, and backup instructions.
• Local papers, highlights, notes, canvas data, and the embedded browser profile stay in the existing data directory when replacing or upgrading the program.

Validation / 验证

The release workflow builds each platform natively, runs frontend and desktop
boundary tests, checks the Rust backend and migrations, and runs a real Electron
window with synthetic PDFs and a local chat fixture. It covers PDF rendering,
search, annotations, note persistence, and embedded-view isolation. Backend
bridge tests include Chinese characters and spaces in file paths.

Connections now gently contract toward their natural length throughout cooling, instead of only recovering extreme stretches. Stronger recovery still handles very long connections. Peripheral cards carry more of the adjustment, while a deliberately placed leaf can retain extra length without pulling its heavier hub across the canvas.

In fixed regression fixtures, the mean connection length after releasing a loose star falls from 643 to 452 canvas units; a two-hub network falls from 672 to 483. These are fixture results, not a guarantee for every graph. Crowded hubs and connections between clusters can remain longer to preserve readable spacing.

426 frontend tests, lint, and the production build passed. Native-window checks cover dragging, long-link recovery, domain avoidance, straight-line clearance, star compactness, saving, and reload. After a 1,000-unit hub drag, the eight-petal fixture retains its directions with a mean link length of 437, a longest/shortest ratio of 1.032, and no drop-point drift.

Distance springs alone let neighbors fall behind a moving hub and settle on the wrong side. Hub dragging now remembers the initial directions of its less-connected immediate neighbors in the same domain. A gentle turning force preserves those directions during dragging and cooling, while connection lengths remain free to adjust for readability and collisions.

The previous release accepted the entire stretched distance as a connection's new natural length. Cooling weakened its restoring force further while readability forces could still push cards apart.

This patch bounds the accepted natural length and keeps a gentle restoring force for excessively stretched connections throughout cooling. Nodes move smoothly instead of snapping to a distance limit. Hub inertia, drop-point retention, expanding backgrounds, and separate domain groups remain in place. Cross-domain connections do not pull groups together.

• More inertia for connected hubs. Nodes with more connections resist acceleration, so dragging a leaf has less influence on the whole network. Directly dragged cards still follow the pointer.

• Keep your drop point. A dropped card stays in place while its neighbors settle. Dragging preserves existing spring lengths instead of pulling the network back toward a compact layout. A new drag or explicit re-layout can move the card again.

Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 13+. Download PaperCanvas-0.2.1-macOS-arm64.zip, unzip, and move PaperCanvas.app to Applications. Quit the previous app before replacing it. Your library, notes, and settings stay in their separate data directory.

Validation / 验证

416 frontend tests passed, including hub inertia, drop retention, multi-card dragging, and asynchronous connection saves. Native-window checks cover pointer following, domain expansion and avoidance, gradual connection separation, and layout persistence after reload.

SHA256SUMS.txt contains the application archive checksum.
