Every chronicle uses exactly one ruleset, picked when it's created:
| Classic | V5 | |
|---|---|---|
| What | Old World of Darkness, Vampire: The Masquerade Revised | Vampire: The Masquerade 5th edition |
| Game systems | Vampire, Werewolf, Mage | Vampire only |
| Can it change later? | No | No |
Older chronicles are Classic. The edition shows as a badge on the chronicle everywhere. Trying to change it through the API returns 409.
- Roll a pool of d10 against a difficulty (2–10, default 6). Each die at or above it is a success.
- Each 1 cancels one success.
- Botch only when no die succeeded at all and at least one 1 shows. If you rolled successes and 1s cancelled them, it's a plain failure (the book's own example: 9, 1, 1, 8, 1 at difficulty 8 is a failure).
- Specialty: a natural 10 counts and is rolled again; further 10s keep going. 1s on those extra dice cancel nothing.
- Willpower (declared before the roll): one automatic success that 1s can't cancel, so the roll can't botch.
- 5+ successes is an exceptional success.
- Roll a pool of d10. As many of them as your Hunger are Hunger dice.
- 6–10 is a success. Every pair of 10s adds 2 more (a pair is 4 successes).
- Difficulty is the number of successes you need. 0 just counts them.
- Critical: a win with at least one pair of 10s. Messy critical: a critical where one of the 10s is a Hunger die.
- Bestial failure: the roll fails and a Hunger die shows 1. Total failure: no successes at all.
- Willpower reroll: once per roll, reroll up to three normal (not Hunger) dice.
- Rouse check: one die, 6+ is fine, otherwise Hunger goes up by 1 (max 5).
- Contested: the acting character wins ties.
-
/ai roll 7or/ai roll 4+3@8(Classic: pool,@difficulty) -
/ai roll 6@3h2(V5: pool 6, need 3 successes, Hunger 2) -
/ai rouse,/ai help(help text follows the chronicle's edition)
The roll window also follows the edition: Classic has difficulty, specialty and Willpower; V5 has successes needed, Hunger (taken from your sheet), Rouse and the Willpower reroll.
| Classic | V5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Attributes | 7/5/3 dots added on top of 1 each | 4 / 3,3,3 / 2,2,2,2 / 1 |
| Abilities / Skills | Talents, Skills, Knowledges: 13/9/5, max 3 at creation | Physical / Social / Mental, three spreads (Jack of all trades, Balanced, Specialist) |
| Morality | Virtues 1 each + 7. Humanity = Conscience + Self-Control, Willpower = Courage | Humanity 7 (8 for fledglings), Stains |
| Blood | Generation and Blood Pool | Hunger and Blood Potency, Predator type |
| Extras | 15 freebie points | 7 Advantage dots, 2 Flaw dots |
The creation wizard switches to the right form for the chronicle you pick.
The Storyteller gets a short summary of the chronicle's rules and your actual character sheet with every message, so it doesn't mix the editions (no Hunger in a Classic chronicle, no difficulty 6 in V5). Rule-book search only looks at books of the chronicle's edition.
