Compás v1.2.0
Compás v1.2.0
R1 firmware refreshed: restored the closed-source vendor Wi-Fi driver. If you installed the earlier v1.2.0 R1 image, install the updated r1.upt; a player-only update does not replace the Wi-Fi driver.
Compás v1.2 is here, full of new features.
A personal note: I like to keep my music player free of distractions, so everything has to be modular. Compás is built around that philosophy. This release brings new plugins, game emulators, eight downloadable player layouts (with more to come), themes, and more.
New features
- Rockbox loader: on R1 and R3 Pro II, the bootloader automatically detects a compatible Rockbox installation on your SD card and shows a boot menu when one is found.
- Emulators: download QuickNES (NES), Gearboy (Game Boy and Game Boy Color), Gearsystem (Master System, Game Gear and SG-1000), gpSP (Game Boy Advance), Beetle PCE Fast (PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16), Beetle WonderSwan (WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color), and PrBoom (Doom) from More > Emulators.
- Updates made easier than ever: the Player Update option is now available directly in Settings > Updates, including online updates. Future player updates can replace just the player without flashing the entire firmware; the underlying update support was already present. Both update menus now explain which parts they replace.
- Folder playback: play a folder or add it to the queue or a playlist from the file browsers. Navigation is unified across browsers.
- Startup image: choose a custom splash through the Startup Image plugin, or enable an optional accent-color tint in Appearance > Accent Color. There is also a new default boot splash—thanks to @buymyhubs for PR #157.
- Music menus and Quick Drawer customization: reorder and hide Music menu entries and Quick Drawer controls. The Kids Mode plugin uses these controls too.
- Top bar options: show or hide individual top bar icons and choose the clock position.
- Six new languages: Russian, Ukrainian, Dutch, German, Finnish and European Portuguese.
- Regional keyboards: AZERTY, QWERTZ, Russian and Ukrainian layouts, a Latin switch for Cyrillic, and long-press character variants such as n, ñ and ń. Themes are also accessible from Settings > Display > Appearance.
- Crossfeed: its own Sound screen, with five angle settings from No delay to 90°.
- PEQ: refined controls and layout.
- MSEB plugin: matches stock HiBy MSEB with native 13-filter processing and all ten controls on one scrolling page, directly under Settings > Sound.
- LastFM Scrobbler V2: now available. No API key required—sign in with just your username and password.
- Metronome plugin: now available to download.
- Album sorting: remembered separately for Albums, Artists and Album Artist.
- Repeat mode: kept when starting another album.
- Track Information: shows the file’s SD location. File browsers show friendly, single-line SD paths.
- Waveforms: much faster previews, displayed progressively and prefetched for the next track, plus faster local FLAC seeking.
- ID3v2.4: fixed parsing of unsynchronized tags.
- Now Playing: large queue counts stay on one line.
Fixes
- Search: inline search is kept when you reopen it.
- Dutch: book instructions now show the actual
Booksfolder name. - Bluetooth: volume fixes.
- USB DAC: fixes for phones, plus a new setting under Charging to disable charging while using USB DAC mode.
- Album sorting: applies consistently inside artist views.
- Cover preloading: always enabled during playback.
Look and feel
- Standardized search and menu icons, with refined navigation spacing.
- Redesigned Wallpaper Selector plugin with a file selector and support for images up to 3 MB.
- Refined press feedback on the Home screen.
Behind the scenes
- Faster startup: approximately 0.5 seconds saved.
Check the plugin store for plugin updates—many more features are on the way.
How to update
- Download the
.uptfile for your device: r1.upt for R1, r3proii.upt for R3 Pro II, or r3ii_2025.upt for R3II (2025). - Copy it to the root of your SD card, keeping its filename.
- Open Settings > Updates > Firmware Update > Install from SD card.
- Select Update & Reboot and let the firmware update finish without turning off the player.
Pura Vida.
Compas v1.1.1
Stability Update
Compas v1.1.1
Fixed a Wi-Fi driver regression that prevented Wi-Fi from turning on on some devices.
Improves player-to-lyrics transitions, including the Vinyl layout, and expands transition caching when memory is available.
Adds a configurable maximum player volume in Settings → Sound → Max Volume, applied to buttons, sliders, remote controls and plugins.
Improves USB storage compatibility by exporting the mounted SD partition when available, with whole-card export as a fallback.
Fixes firmware updates getting blocked after USB storage switching. Manual SD-card updates accept the device’s firmware filename, allowing stock and other custom firmware; OTA downloads retain image validation.
Compas v1.1
Compas v1.1
Compas v1.1 brings a faster, more capable player experience across the R1, R3 Pro II, and R3II (2025).
- Custom kernels and drivers: all three models include custom kernels and rebuilt drivers. R1 includes the custom display and radio drivers; R3 Pro II and R3II (2025) include rebuilt utility drivers and retain their vendor display and radio drivers.
- Interface and controls: a refreshed More menu, theme improvements, expanded button controls, asynchronous screen opening, waveform improvements, and previews in the Plugin Store.
- Audio and playback: more reliable Opus playback and seeking, improvements to AAC, ALAC and APE, new WavPack and CAF support, and seeking for remote files, including M4A.
- Library and books: a new File Manager; audiobook author, series, and podcast browsing; and more reliable resume positions.
- Plugins: Jellyfin / Emby, Discover, ListenBrainz, lyrics and cover fetchers, Album Shuffle, radio search, Track Inspector, context and output-aware EQ, bedtime fades, volume limiting, per-album rules, A-B repeat and ABX comparison. Kids Mode and Lock Screen fixes are included here too.
- Bluetooth and memory: smoother Bluetooth volume control and reconnects, plus memory use reductions across long-running playback and browsing.
- Setup and power: new installations default to QWERTY and suspend-to-RAM after 10 minutes idle. Updates preserve saved preferences. The selected idle action now has a visible indicator.
- Fixes: improvements to the player, library, plugin store, setup, and connection behavior.
Downloads: r1.upt, r3proii.upt, and r3ii_2025.upt are full firmware images for their respective models. Standalone player binaries are included too.
To update only the player, copy the matching standalone binary to SD/.compas/compas_player and reboot. Verify downloads against the attached SHA256SUMS.
Compas v1.0.1
A stability update for Compas v1.0.
- Optional QWERTY keyboard: choose T9 or QWERTY in Settings > Display > Appearance > Keyboard, with accented letters and symbols. T9 remains the default.
- Reduce possible reboots during long MP3 processing and waveform generation by moving large scratch buffers off worker stacks and sizing decoder threads explicitly.
- Stop checking writable SD cards solely because their FAT dirty flag is set, avoiding unnecessary startup repair loops on small cards. Interrupted checks are guarded against repeated attempts.
- Reduce memory spikes when starting helper processes, and save persistent crash and player-exit diagnostics for unexpected restarts.
- Support versioned firmware releases while retaining compatibility with dated OTA releases. This update prepares the player for version-only releases starting with v1.1.
Download the .upt for your device and verify it against SHA256SUMS.
Compas v1.0.1 (OTA compatibility)
OTA compatibility companion for Compas v1.0.1. These are the same firmware images and checksums, published under a dated tag so older players can download the update. Starting with v1.1, releases use versioned tags only.

What's New
R3 Pro II: This image is pre-production. Please report anything unusual, especially problems with startup, Bluetooth, playback, or your music library. Tell us what happened and what you were doing.
A new name: Open Player is becoming Compás Player. You may still see the old name in a few places for now. We will finish the name change and update the documentation over time.
- A simpler look: Now Playing shows title, artist, and album clearly. The pull-down controls have a new layout, lists feel quicker, the default background is black again, and holding Power shows Power Off and Reboot.
- Faster libraries: Large folders open quickly, music database updates skip unchanged songs, and first scans are faster. Songs with multiple artists appear under each artist.
- Safer SD cards: Swapping cards clears the old library and queue, then loads the new card's. Database problems and unreadable folders are handled more safely. Favorites and play history survive a database upgrade.
- Smoother playback: You can turn Gapless off. USB headset buttons work, damaged FLAC files are less likely to cause a reboot, and USB DAC playback no longer builds up delay.
- Better Bluetooth: Headphones stay connected when songs use a different sound rate. You can choose a rate for each headset and see the rate and codec in use. Opening Bluetooth during playback no longer starts a scan that can interrupt music.
- Other improvements: USB debugging moved to Developer Options. The Wi-Fi switch is more reliable, and plugins can add pull-down controls, themes, and sound profiles.
Before updating: Install the full firmware image for the Bluetooth system changes and improved sound conversion. Replacing only the player file will not install them. Update your plugin files to use the new plugin features.

Weekly Beta 2026-09-16
Hotfix - Bluetooth+wifi turned on at the same time causing a device stall for a couple of seconds
What's New
Changes from August 31 to September 15, 2026, for this weekly beta.
This update brings a redesigned player and menus, lyrics that open directly
from the album cover, smoother navigation, and improvements to audio playback
and library browsing. It also adds headphone remote controls and clearer
feedback when a Subsonic connection or library request fails.
A refreshed player and interface
- A new Now Playing layout. Album art sits in a rounded card over a
blurred background drawn from the cover. The title and smaller, gray
artist/album line are left-aligned, with a short pause before long text
starts scrolling. The cover also shows your position in the queue. - Lyrics stay part of the player. Tap the cover to shrink it into the
upper-left corner, move the track information beside it, and show lyrics
below. Tap again to bring back the full cover and playback controls.
Fixed a drawer-gesture conflict that hid the return animation. Lyrics can
be disabled in Music Controls. - Clearer playback details. The quality badge expands to show the
format, bit depth, and sample rate without scrolling. Its outer ring was
removed after it caused visible flickering. The three-dot menu now sits
beside the next-track button, and the favorite button is easier to tap. - A more consistent look. Home, Settings, Wireless, and other main menus
have refreshed icons and backgrounds. Net Radio and Audiobooks follow
the new menu style too. The status bar uses Lucide icons, including the
battery, with a centered clock and sizing independent of text-size settings.
The battery icon is now larger and easier to read at a glance. - Fixed a gesture conflict where swiping on the Now Playing seek bar could
trigger the back-swipe navigation instead of adjusting playback position. - More display options. Home supports custom background images and
individual tile colors through themes and plugins. You can also choose
how long the screen waits before dimming. Custom fonts have improved
performance and optional emoji support.
Playback and everyday controls
- Added SBC-XQ to Bluetooth codec settings for higher-quality SBC
output to compatible headphones. Turn Bluetooth off and on after
switching into or out of this mode. - Added native 24-bit USB audio output and support for 24-bit crossfades.
Improved high-sample-rate playback and fixed USB DAC compatibility with macOS. - Improved Bluetooth DAC buffering for longer listening sessions and fixed
Bluetooth/USB output write-timeout handling. - Improved automatic switching between the R3 Pro II's 3.5mm and 4.4mm
outputs. Fixed playback-position restoration after a restart, seek-bar
positioning, and EQ preset saving. - Added an In-line Remote setting for supported wired-headphone
controls. It is enabled by default. - Reworked playlist and queue handling. Queue state is now stored on the
SD card, and the active queue clears when that card is removed.
Faster browsing and better artwork support
- More artwork stays cached, reducing repeated thumbnail loading as you
browse. Player-sized cover caching and lighter metadata reads also
reduce work when opening tracks and lyrics. - Added progressive JPEG support and improved handling of large JPEGs,
16-bit PNGs, BMPs, and JPEGs with unusual color-sampling layouts. Artwork
detection and decoding are more reliable across different files. - Album lists now show Album Artist information.
- In Files, the back button and back swipe move up one folder before
leaving the browser. Quick swipes are less likely to bounce back, and a
crash during player-screen swipe navigation was fixed.
Subsonic and plugins
- Subsonic requests now have visible failure feedback. Connection and
library-loading screens have a 30-second UI timeout. Errors distinguish
network failures, HTTP responses, and invalid server data instead of
silently returning to the previous screen. - Failed artist loading can be retried. A successful login no longer
requires a populated artist list. If the initial artist request fails,
opening Artists retries it rather than leaving a permanently empty cache. - Added the missing Subsonic download-button icon and improved handling of server
addresses with trailing slashes or/rest. - Last.fm now keeps a persistent queue of scrobbles for upload when the
service is reachable again, including after a restart. - Plugins can be enabled, disabled, and reloaded from Settings without a
firmware reinstall. Fixed unexpected restarts during plugin management
and integrated plugin options into Music Settings categories. - Added the MSEB plugin, with MSEB-inspired sound shaping using the
player's own parametric EQ, and improved its navigation.
Lock Screen gained a clock over artwork and smoother swipe-up behavior;
Play Through also received fixes.
Device support, charging, and updates
- Added board-specific builds and display layouts for R3 Pro II and
R3 II 2025, alongside the R1 build. Hardware support and behavior
remain specific to each model. - On R3 Pro II, Charge Limiter and Safe Charging now apply voltage and
current limits to the dedicated charger, with restoration when disabled.
Charging status also reads from the correct hardware source. - Improved installation of player updates from the SD card. The bootloader
compares build dates so an older installed player does not override a
newer player included in a firmware update. - Fixed the Firmware Update action powering off instead of rebooting into
recovery, and corrected updater status text. - No unnecessary library scans after charging. Unplugging from a wall
charger or a charging-only cable no longer triggers a database update.
Automatic scans now require a confirmed USB Storage connection to a
computer and still respect the auto-rescan setting. A confirmed Storage
session is remembered even if the USB controller suspends or resets
before unplugging, and unreadable power-status samples are no longer
treated as disconnections. This detects a computer Storage session, not
individual file transfers: a computer connection can still trigger a scan
even if no files were changed.
Behind the scenes
Upgraded LVGL, the library that powers the interface, from 9.1 to 9.5.
Song lists now read track duration and format in the background, so titles
appear without waiting for every audio file to be opened. Details fill in
without resetting your scroll position, and results from pages you have left
are ignored. WMA decoder initialization is also synchronized so background
probing and playback can safely open WMA files at the same time.
Shared UI builders and substantial cleanup across the player reduce duplicated
code and make layouts easier to maintain. Other work includes safer handling
of overlapping DLNA requests, reduced memory use during plugin reloads,
and improved crash diagnostics. The build configuration
again selects mbedTLS 3.6.2 after connectivity regressions with 3.6.7.
Corrected the upgraded Bluetooth service's pairing-storage location so saved
headphones and trust settings survive a restart, and Bluetooth sample-rate
changes no longer count as an immediate headphone disconnect. Turning
Bluetooth on now makes a bounded background attempt to reconnect the last
used headphones. Bluetooth status checks behind the top bar and quick-drawer
icons also no longer fork one process per paired device on every refresh,
removing a source of UI slowdown after turning on both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Improved playback restart recovery, including bounded retries for temporary
output-open failures and preserved output format for eligible 24-bit tracks
during pause, seek, and track-change fades. Routine volume and playback
settings now save in the background, Web Import and Open Link/DLNA service
changes run in the background, and Wi-Fi signal updates no longer wait on
command-line tools on the UI thread. Library scans that fail to save now
record the specific cause in the diagnostic log instead of a plain pass/fail
flag, when database logging is enabled in Developer Options.
Prepared a refresh of the firmware's Bluetooth audio and supporting
libraries, led by BlueALSA 5.0.0, with updated ALSA, SBC, AAC, GLib, D-Bus,
zlib, and XML parsing libraries and ALSA utilities (1.2.16) in the candidate
base image, plus compatibility with newer BlueZ paired-device commands. The
device's kernel, hardware drivers, and working LDAC libraries remain
unchanged; device playback and reconnect testing is still required before
inclusion.
Automated daily builds continue; weekly beta builds are scheduled for Mondays
at 1:00 p.m. Costa Rica time.
Before updating
Emoji support needs the new font supplied in the full firmware package;
replacing only the player executable will not install it. Updated plugin
features also require the corresponding plugin files.
Built automatically from commit cc8a48e0d3fc72554d1a2b0be584f015afd821d0.
