iPads. The app now installs on iPads with an M-series chip, as well as iPhones. iPads are untested: if you have one, please post your results with the app budget line from scripts/phone-up.sh, since we don't know yet how much memory iPadOS gives the app.

Also:

  • The app's text says "iPad" on an iPad, and it runs full screen there (it has to stay in front while the Mac uses it).
  • README: the one-line Mac installer is now at the top of Setup; the phone's half of the model is ~6.9 GB (it said 5.1).

Nothing changed on the Mac side: the engine and template are the same files as v0.0.1.

Install

Mac: curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StayLameBro/backburner/main/install.sh | bash

iPhone / iPad: AltStore 2.2+ with a free Apple ID. Sources → + → https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StayLameBro/backburner/main/altstore/source.json (if you added it for v0.0.1, AltStore offers the update). Steps: docs/INSTALL-IPHONE.md. Not SideStore: it drops the memory entitlement.

Still very early. Tested on a MacBook Pro M4 Pro (24 GB) with an iPhone 17 Pro Max and a 16 Pro Max.

Very early. First public build: expect rough edges, and please post your results, good or bad.

Your iPhone helps your Mac run Qwen3.8-27B over a USB-C cable: 29–44% faster prompt reading at 16k–48k context, and up to ~200k context on a 24 GB Mac (README for the numbers and how it works).

Install

Mac (Apple Silicon, 24 GB+, macOS 14+). One command; it downloads the engine and models (~24 GB) and makes the phone's half:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StayLameBro/backburner/main/install.sh | bash

iPhone (15 Pro or newer; the 17 Pro gets the most from it). No developer account: install Backburner.ipa below with AltStore 2.2+ and a free Apple ID. Easiest: in AltStore, Sources → + → https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StayLameBro/backburner/main/altstore/source.json (you'll get updates too). Steps: docs/INSTALL-IPHONE.md. Not SideStore: it drops the memory entitlement. We haven't tested the AltStore route ourselves yet; if you try it, please post the app budget number from scripts/phone-up.sh.

Then plug the phone in with a 10 Gb/s USB-C cable, open Backburner, and:

backburner phone # once: copies the phone's half of the model (~6.9 GB) over the cable
backburner # OpenAI-compatible server at http://127.0.0.1:8080/v1

Files

  • Backburner.ipa: the iPhone app, unsigned (AltStore signs it with your Apple ID)
  • backburner-mac-arm64.tar.gz: the Mac engine (llama-server, llama-quantize), macOS 14+, any Apple Silicon Mac. install.sh downloads it for you
  • ane-template.tar.gz: the iPhone Neural Engine page template (install.sh downloads it)
  • SHA256SUMS

Tested on a MacBook Pro M4 Pro (24 GB) with an iPhone 17 Pro Max and a 16 Pro Max. Other Macs and phones are untested: that's what the results form is for.
