Added

  • Files and folders can have a nickname, set from the right-click menu in the folder tree, saved places and listing. It shows as "Nickname (name)" without renaming anything on disk.
  • A Film Grain switch in the theme menu turns the grain texture on or off on every surface. It is on by default.
  • The maximize button opens the Windows 11 snap layouts menu.
  • The right-click menu can compress files and folders to a new ZIP and extract a .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz or .gz here or into its own folder. Nothing already there is overwritten.
  • KillerShell checks for updates on startup and offers a newer release in a dialog with an Always check on startup box. A Check for updates on startup checkbox on the About card turns the check back on.

Changed

  • The saved places drawer takes at most 40% of the sidebar height and scrolls past that, so a long list leaves the folder tree usable.
  • The wordmarks use Punktype and Lacquer, dialog headings use Lacquer, and the interface text and footers use Killer Sans, in place of the typewriter font in the app and on the website.
  • Confirm, install and uninstall dialogs use the family setup dialog layout, with a notice icon, a larger Lacquer heading and evenly sized buttons.
  • Malaise file and terminal content use a slightly lighter gray, distinct from menus, pane bars and active tabs.
  • The scroll edge shadows in the file list and Performance run underneath the scrollbar out to the pane edges, as in KillerScan.
  • On the 98SE theme, the Open, Save and folder picker dialogs show the selected item in a status bar with a resize grip, as Windows 98 does, and their rows use the classic narrow spacing.
  • The Light theme draws a softer shadow under the toolbars.
  • A new tab is named for the folder it opens on instead of "new search", the new tab button reads "New tab", and the shortcut list says Ctrl+T opens a new tab at Home.

Fixed

  • Files dragged out of KillerShell drop into Microsoft Teams and other apps that refused them, because the drag now carries the same shell data Explorer sends.
  • Terminal autocomplete suggestions are drawn clearly faded, so they no longer look like typed text.
  • Ctrl+C in the terminal stops a running command even when KillerShell was started by a program that ignores Ctrl+C.
  • Silent installs refuse an exe without a valid signature, return specific Windows error codes and reject a second concurrent install instead of reporting a general failure.
  • A silent install started without admin rights, as the Microsoft Store runs it, installs for the current user with no prompt instead of failing.
  • Chocolatey uninstalls run the silent uninstaller and fail with its exit code instead of opening the uninstall prompt.
  • Icon-only buttons give screen readers the name from their tooltip, and controls reached with the keyboard show a dotted focus outline.
  • On a small screen the window opens sized to fit the desktop instead of running past its edges.
  • Resizing a dual-pane window keeps both panes visible, including with sidebars open or enlarged interface text.
  • Dragging the dual-pane divider trades width between the two panes and keeps the window the same width.
  • Opening the second pane near the right edge of a monitor slides the window left to make room instead of squeezing the panes, and closing it slides the window back.
  • Closing the second pane on a snapped window keeps the window snapped and gives the space back to the first pane, and a later split no longer closes to the wrong width.
  • The folder tree's scrollbar thumbs grow on hover, stay easy to grab while dragging, and remain clear of the content fades.
  • In a narrow pane the folder path and the terminal's working folder move to their own row below the buttons, so they stay readable instead of being squeezed.
  • On the 98SE theme, the interface, menus and dialog captions use Microsoft Sans Serif instead of Killer Sans and Tahoma.
  • Kept app icons sharp at fractional display DPI and app zoom by caching exact pixel sizes from a covering source and aligning the final draw to device pixels.
  • Submenus attach consistently to their opening rows, with native direction and screen-edge placement.
  • Context menus that open upward or leftward near a screen edge sit at the pointer instead of floating away from it.
  • The accent ring on an administrator window squares its corners when the window is maximized.
  • Deleting the open folder from another window or computer moves the listing up to its parent and drops the folder from the tree, instead of leaving both showing a folder that is gone.
  • Open branches of the folder tree follow folders added, renamed or deleted by other programs and computers, and a branch reopened after a change shows what is on disk now.
  • Installed Apps lists Steve the Killer as the publisher after an update, instead of keeping the old "Steve / thekiller.net" label from the first install.
  • Dialog title wordmarks keep the main window's dark halo behind the app name on the Light theme's Yellow accent, so the yellow no longer fades into the title bar.
  • Active and hovered sidebar rail icons show the yellow accent with a dark halo on the Light theme's Yellow accent, instead of near-black.
  • The wordmark has a soft shadow on the Light theme too, so it no longer looks thin on the light title bar, and the dark themes use the same lighter shadow as the rest of the Killer Tools family.
  • The title bar icon is 27px and has its own 27px image, so it is a little larger and sharper.
  • Button gradients start at the outline color and darken toward the bottom, so a hovered button no longer looks darker than its border.
  • Long checkbox labels in dialogs wrap instead of running past the edge.
  • Reworded the Clear all data prompt to list what it deletes in parentheses, in every language.
  • Centered website logos, corrected current features and documentation, and refreshed the website and README with 1.4.0 screenshots and matching captions.
  • Menu separators draw their divider line instead of leaving an empty gap.
  • The Select, OK and Save buttons in the folder picker, rename and terminal profile dialogs use the family outline button instead of a solid dark block.
  • Context menus use Killer Sans UI like the rest of the interface instead of Segoe UI.
  • Opening a file in KillerShell from Explorer no longer leaves an empty tab beside it, and a launch whose paths cannot be opened lands at Home.
  • A folder that fails to open reports it on the status line instead of leaving the tab blank.
  • The --cli registry command accepts short hive names such as HKLM and HKCU, so the documented example works.
  • Opening the second pane from a terminal, editor or tool tab starts it at Home instead of an empty tab.
  • Search and piped tabs keep their search icon after the search finishes.
