1.5.0 can make KillerShell your default terminal and folder opener, adds docked details and a smoother Performance tab, and makes saves, copies and installs safer.
Fixed
- Failed document saves preserve the original and retain recovery copies when restoration fails. Administrator saves keep newer edits unsaved and cannot overwrite a later save. Saving over a file another program changed since it was opened asks whether to replace it, reload it or save a copy, with Cancel as the default.
- Failed or canceled copies and moves preserve existing destinations and recovery copies. Read-only moves retain file attributes, cancellation stops pending link moves, and cleanup leaves skipped link targets untouched. Cross-drive and mounted-volume moves stay cancellable, retain alternate streams, honor conflict choices, and report incomplete work. Canceling a permanent delete stops before the next file and reports a folder left partly deleted.
- Installation and updates verify replacements before publishing them. Signed copies require a valid update from the same publisher, and unreadable or invalid current images cannot bypass that check. Recovery cleanup verifies file identity and contents, preserves unrelated files, and lets a successful retry be uninstalled.
- Closing, updating, installing or signing out checks unsaved documents in both panes. Cancel preserves the session and live folder updates.
- Registry key renames copy the key and then remove the original instead of calling Windows' key rename, which could crash the system. Renames preserve value types, permissions and child keys, and refuse link keys or owners that a copy cannot keep. Switching between hexadecimal and decimal keeps the value unchanged.
- Text files with malformed encoding stay closed instead of changing bytes on save. Lossy saves are refused, encoding changes remain unsaved through Undo, and valid legacy and UTF-32 files round-trip unchanged.
- ZIP edits preserve permissions and attributes, distinguish case-sensitive names, and reject conflicting output paths before publication. TAR extraction validates extended metadata, and cancellation stops extraction through the final entry.
- Large expanded folders no longer freeze startup or consume gigabytes of tree controls.
- Terminal input and output stay responsive under load and when launched with redirected output. CJK, emoji and combining marks use consistent widths, unbound Alt shortcuts reach the shell, and closing a terminal releases pending work. Making a terminal shorter moves its oldest rows into scrollback instead of dropping recent output. Colon-separated color codes show their colors instead of printing stray digits. Terminal tabs follow folders whose names start or end with spaces, and WSL folders containing quotes survive tear-out, merge and session restore.
- Ending or restarting a process verifies its identity. Restart also confirms the executable is still in place and holds it until the replacement starts, so a missing file no longer ends the original first. Administrator restarts keep the original running until elevation is approved, and reused process IDs receive fresh status information.
- Terminal output cannot redirect a tab to a network share. Files extracted from downloaded archives retain Windows' internet safety mark, and CSV exports treat formula-like names as text.
- CSV and HTML exports preserve existing reports when replacement fails. File, search and storage reports declare the language they are written in, for every app language. Report columns sort from the keyboard, show visible focus and announce their sort order.
- Bundled KillerPivot verifies tenant connections, disconnects a Graph session left from another tenant when switching, reports incomplete disconnects, and preserves configuration after failed saves. KillerScripts preserves Unicode text, complete caches, and immutable script versions needed by detached child launches.
- Search remains cancellable with complex wildcards, empty folders and large text files. Background work no longer stalls search workers. Navigating while a search checks its folders keeps the new listing. Search roots are checked on their own threads, so a busy moment no longer makes every root read as missing. Unicode content search uses bounded previews and reports incomplete results; recursive search, copy and archive addition skip directory links and report counts.
- File and folder pickers remain responsive during storage reads, ignore stale results, and keep invalid input in the dialog. A folder with more than 10,000 items, or too slow to read in 10 seconds, opens with what was read and says so. Canceled administrator requests and failed file opens report errors without closing the app.
- Both panes restore their tabs and search options, including hidden tabs. Delayed tab closure stays in its owning pane without stealing focus or interrupting the other pane's folder updates.
- Service restarts finish after their tab or window closes, with failures reported or logged. Silent installation returns a retryable busy code when KillerShell is running.
- Storage scans support network and extended-length paths, and their context menu shows the full selected path. Canceled scans and stale Event Viewer loads cannot replace newer results; hidden performance tabs stop sampling, and GPU counters map to their adapters.
- Command-line JSON stays valid with unusual Unicode text, accepts an optional trailing
--json, and reports skipped links and unreadable search paths. New windows and administrator launches preserve drive roots and recover from failed handoffs. - Screen readers receive terminal output, selection and meaningful control names. The final terminal notification includes its latest text. Keyboard focus stays inside open cards, returns on close, skips hidden controls, and moves correctly through option groups and storage views.
- At an app scale other than 100%, the pane's sides land on whole pixels, so its rounded corners match instead of one coming out crisp and the other smeared.
- Windows contrast themes use matching system foreground and background colors, including hovered menu and dropdown text, without decorative effects, and content no longer nearly matches the window. Windows and dialogs fit small or scaled monitors, and card controls remain reachable in short windows.
- Language changes refresh both panes and hidden tabs. A single search result shows "1 match." App, installer, website and Store translations cover remaining English labels, corrected wording and shortcut documentation. Standalone uninstall dialogs use the saved language.
- Theme text, selections and accent colors remain readable, including Light Yellow and Orange. File and bookmark lists use theme content colors. Dark text fields have a deeper fill so they stand out from their surroundings.
- The website's screenshots support keyboard navigation and translated controls, its pages and command examples fit narrow screens, and its lighter film grain can be turned off (Alt+Shift+G).
Changed
- Search opens below its title-bar button, with a KillerSearch heading, the window background, a clear accent border and one close control replacing its button. One scope dropdown chooses the current folder, open tabs, whole computer or existing results. Its compact vertical form grows with terms and filters, scrolls as one panel, and includes a sliding pattern-help drawer. Single-row pane toolbars keep the address editable, with standard sort dropdowns and responsive button overflow. Each window remembers its view settings. New folders default to Modified, newest first; Ctrl+scroll cycles list, details and icon sizes.
- Performance graphs scroll smoothly and their numbers count to each new reading instead of jumping once a second; auto-scaled graphs zoom to fit a new peak the same way. The summary boxes carry a large hardware icon in their upper right corner that shrinks, then gives way, before the reading shrinks in a narrow window, and the CPU, memory and GPU cards name their hardware beside one.
- Tabs can sit at the top or bottom of each window, with subtle corners, stable label spacing and larger close targets. With the tabs below, the current tab is part of the folder it shows: while there is more to scroll, the list's bottom shadow runs on into the tab as one fade, and the row of icons cut off at the list's foot carries on across the tab and fades out partway down it.
- With two panes open, the pane without focus dims slightly so the focused one stands out. Windows contrast themes keep both at full strength.
- Light is shades of gray with nothing white: the background, sidebar and footer are the darkest gray (#cccccc), menus and bars a step lighter, then panes, then fields.
- Dropping files on a saved place always moves them, including across drives.
- The title bar names the active tab's kind, such as File Browser or PowerShell Terminal, instead of its folder, and its right-click menu has Windows' own items, icons and Alt+F4. Toolbar icons are larger and crisp, and About sets its options out in evenly spaced pairs.
- Hovered menu and list items show their text in the theme accent, lightened or darkened only as far as needed to stay readable on the hover fill.
- Wordmarks and headings are raised with a subtle bevel in their own color instead of a dark outline. The Dark theme's red accent is the brand red again instead of a pink tint.
Added
- Use KillerShell as the default terminal, in the About card. Console programs open in their own KillerShell window with the default terminal look, and a window closes when its program exits cleanly. Turning it off, or uninstalling, puts back the terminal you had; a choice made since in Windows Settings is left alone. Needs an installed copy and Windows Terminal, which passes the programs over.
- Open folders in KillerShell, in the About card. Double-clicking a folder or drive, or a program asking Windows to open one, opens it in a KillerShell window; This PC, Recycle Bin, Control Panel, the desktop, open/save dialogs and programs that run explorer.exe themselves stay with Explorer. Turning it off, removing the associations, or uninstalling puts back what opened folders before, including another file manager's; removing an all-users copy does that for every user, including Microsoft Entra accounts and a copy removed by SYSTEM through an RMM or Intune. A window opened for a folder leaves your remembered tabs alone.
- Details can dock below or to the right of either pane, or turn off. Filenames shrink to fit and use beveled Lacquer lettering. Details and pane layouts have direct shortcuts and right-click menus; the rail cycles one pane, side-by-side panes and stacked panes.
- Performance cards keep their own height and can be dragged into another order or into the space under a shorter card. Their right-click menu minimizes a card to its title line, sets it to one column or two, and resets the layout, and double-clicking a card minimizes or restores it. The arrangement is remembered.
- Keyboard shortcuts cover the remaining commands and appear in menus, tooltips, the shortcut card and website. Ctrl+F6 switches panes, and the keyboard map shows Ctrl+Alt combinations. About can hide menu and tooltip shortcut hints while keeping the keys active.
- Added Slovenian across the app, installer, help, website and keyboard shortcuts.
- Added optional Start with Windows and Close to system tray settings, both off by default.
- New windows open at the size and place of the last one closed, snapped size included.
- Installed copies add
killershellto PATH and provide--help; portable copies remain usable by path. - File details include image dimensions, document pages, media duration and file versions when available.
- Archive options group named ZIP, TAR and TAR.GZ creation with extraction commands. Extra copy commands share a submenu, and file, folder and empty-space menus show relevant actions.
- Added a right-hand position for the folder tree and its rail, selectable from its menu or keyboard.
- Added a New Tab button after tab overflow to open Home. Mouse Back and Forward buttons navigate folder history.
- Untitled documents and files without an extension pick their syntax colors from their contents.
- Added the Recycle Bin to saved places and crash logging for unexpected exits.
