Duplicate Subtitle Tracks Or Non Appearing Tracks On AppleTV #99

Description

@xxVOXxx

Using a Mac with an iTunes library to stream to AppleTV with great success using Subler for the most part. The video files are all x264 .mp4 converted with handbrake, the audio tracks are all AAC, and the Subtitle tracks are .srt Tx3g and have been added by Subler. Everything views perfectly well in VLC Media player but the AppleTV seems to be very picky about how things are set and troubleshooting this has been difficult despite reading as much on the topic as I could find.

If the video contains 1 audio track and 1 subtitle track there is no issue at all and everything runs smoothly on the ATV, however if the video contains more than one subtitle track in the same language (Japanese Anime so there is one subtitle track for Signs/Titles/Songs and one subtitle track for Full English translation) then there seems to be an issue and one of these things happens:

  1. If I leave the settings default on Subler it will choose Enable for the Video Track, 1st Audio Track, and 1st Subtitle Track and leave the 2nd Audio Track and 2nd Subtitle track unchecked. It also sets all Audio Tracks and Subtitle Tracks as "Main Content" and none are "Forced".

This results in only ONE of the subtitle tracks showing up when viewed on AppleTV, even though they all show up in VLC.

  1. If I change the 2nd Subtitle Track characteristics to "Auxillary Content", BOTH tracks will now show up, but the second track is duplicated so there are three total tracks and the third one displays nothing at all when selected.

For example: "Signs/Titles/Songs", "Full English Subtitles", and "Full English Subtitles Forced". This is clearly better than one not showing at all but not the outcome we want.

  1. Only If I change the 2nd Subtitle Track language from English to another language, even just "English (United States)" it will now show BOTH subtitle tracks properly but now one displays as English and the other English (United States) which is ridiculous to have to do for any video files with multiple subs.

So the question is - is this a known issue already that it's not possible to have two subtitle tracks set to the same language in the same file on AppleTV? If so, am I missing something about how to make these properly display without causing the duplicates (using "Auxillary Content") or having to make any secondary or tertiary subtitle tracks labeled as a different language?

Thanks for any input on this.
