Base Model Type

The base model type is an extension of the vanilla model format with properties to overwrite light emission, shading, ambient occlusion, and more.

Tip

A description of the vanilla model format can be found at the Minecraft wiki.

The base model type adds the following properties to the vanilla model format:

key values default description
emissive true or false false Whether the model is emissive
ambient_occlusion true or false true Whether the model should be rendered with ambient occlusion
shade true or false true Whether the model should be shaded, 26.2 and below only
shade_direction_override up, down, north, east, south, west None Direction to use for shade, 26.3 and above only
gui_light front, side side Lighting to use when the model is rendered in a gui

Elements:

key values default description
emissive true or false false Whether the element is emissive
ambient_occlusion true or false true Whether the element should be rendered with ambient occlusion
shade true or false true Whether the element should be shaded, 26.2 and below only
shade_direction_override up, down, north, east, south, west None Direction to use for shade, 26.3 and above only
light_emission integer, >=0 <=15 0 Base light-level of the element (in vanilla for Minecraft 1.21.1+)

Element faces:

key values default description
emissive true or false false Whether the face is emissive
ambient_occlusion true or false true Whether the face should be rendered with ambient occlusion
shade true or false true Whether the face should be shaded, 26.2 and below only
shade_direction_override up, down, north, east, south, west None Direction to use for shade, 26.3 and above only
light_emission integer, >=0 <=15 0 Base light-level of the face

Here is an example of what the data for a base model can look like:

{
  "loader": "fusion:model",
  "type": "base",
  "textures": {
    "all": "block/cobblestone",
    "particle": "#all"
  },
  "emissive": true,
  "ambient_occlusion": true,
  "shade": false,
  "gui_light": "front",
  "elements": [
    {
      "from": [0, 16, 0],
      "to": [16, 16, 16],
      "light_emission": 8,
      "faces": {
        "up": {
          "texture": "#all",
          "emissive": false,
          "cullface": "up"
        },
        "down": {
          "texture": "#all",
          "shade": true,
          "light_emission": 15
        }
      }
    },
    {
      "from": [2, 0, 2],
      "to": [14, 8, 14],
      "emissive": false,
      "ambient_occlusion": false,
      "shade": true,
      "faces": {
        "north": {
          "texture": "#all",
          "ambient_occlusion": true
        }
      }
    }
  ]
}

Gui light

The gui_light property determines the direction of lighting when the model is rendered in a gui. In vanilla, the lighting is always side except for generated item models, i.e.models that have use minecraft:item/generated as a parent. Here is an example of what Orange Concrete and Copper Ingot look like for the different gui_light values:

"gui_light": "side"

Orange Concrete with gui light side Copper Ingot with gui light side

"gui_light": "front"

Orange Concrete with gui light front Copper Ingot with gui light front
