BackgroundSearch v2.7.1
Search from selected text without losing the page you're reading. This release adds a download-led README with actual installed-extension screenshots, a full concept archive and setup instructions inside both browser ZIPs.
What changed
- Fixed Quick Menu startup and live settings refresh. Buttons now show engine names instead of relying on icons alone.
- Engine choices are near the top of settings. The side panel fits narrow widths, and foreground engine choices no longer conflict with the background-tab default.
- Fixed short search aliases and middle-click capture staying active after it was disabled. Settings imports are checked before replacing saved data.
- Preserved the original wordmark. Static toolbar sizes now match the cleaner magnifier already drawn by the extension.
- Corrected privacy details for favicon requests, synced settings and local side-panel history. Both install packages now include the MIT license and an offline guide.
Choose a download
Chrome ZIP: extract it to a permanent folder, open chrome://extensions, enable Developer mode, then choose Load unpacked. Keep the folder in place.
Firefox ZIP: requires Firefox 142 or newer. Extract it and load manifest.json through about:debugging. This package is unsigned and temporary. Firefox removes it at restart. Chrome's side panel and automatic tab groups aren't included.
The CRX is a secondary, signed self-hosted package, not a Chrome Web Store installer. Use the Chrome ZIP for the normal setup above. The source ZIP includes the complete source and archived project materials. SHA256SUMS.txt lists download checksums.
Verification
19 runtime checks and four package checks pass. The source ZIP rebuilds the same Chrome and Firefox install ZIPs byte for byte. Ten installed Chromium checks and four Firefox checks pass in owned headless profiles. The CRX signature verifies, and the committed change passes the local secret scan.
Provider traffic was blocked during browser checks. Destination URLs were verified, not live provider results. Native right-click menus, the real clipboard and authenticated provider accounts weren't automated. See the repository's verification notes for details.
