Vantage v0.4.0 — Animated weather + time-of-day background

The new tab page now lives on top of an animated scene that reflects what's happening outside — the time of day, where the sun is in the sky for your location, and the current weather.

What's new

Animated background

  • Sky transitions through nine phases — night → pre-dawn → sunrise → morning → midday → afternoon → golden hour → sunset → dusk — each with hand-tuned multi-stop gradients, smoothly animated via CSS @property color interpolation.
  • Sun / moon moves along an arc derived from your real sunrise / sunset times (Open-Meteo daily.sunrise / daily.sunset). East-to-west across the viewport, peaking near the top at solar noon. The disc grows and warms during golden hour and sunset; a small moon takes its place at night.
  • Weather overlays drive the scene per Open-Meteo's WMO code:
    • drifting clouds (cloudy / overcast)
    • rain streaks (drizzle / rain / heavy rain)
    • snow particles (snow / heavy snow)
    • white haze (fog)
    • darkened sky + lightning flashes (storm)
  • Palm-tree silhouette appears bottom-right during golden hour and sunset only. Subtle sway animation.
  • Stars twinkle at dusk and through the night.
  • Honors prefers-reduced-motion — looped animations stop, colors and sun position remain.
  • Toggle: Settings → Background → Animated background.

Bug fixes

  • Engine-picker dropdown wouldn't close. CSS specificity bug — .engine-picker__popover { display: flex } and the user-agent [hidden] { display: none } had equal specificity, the author class won, and popover.hidden = true did nothing visually. Fixed with a global [hidden] { display: none !important; } rule.

Install

Don't drag the .crx onto your extensions page. Stock Chrome / Brave / Edge reject self-signed CRX files with CRX_REQUIRED_PROOF_MISSING (Chromium policy since 75). The recommended path is the PowerShell installer below or Load unpacked from the ZIP.

Option A — PowerShell installer (Windows)

Auto-elevates, downloads this release, extracts to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Vantage\extension, and adds --load-extension="<that path>" to every Brave / Chrome / Edge / Vivaldi / Opera shortcut on the system. Browser auto-loads Vantage on every launch from a modified shortcut.

If you're already on v0.3.0 from this same installer, just re-run the one-liner — it'll download v0.4.0 and replace the extension files in place. No shortcut changes needed.

Option B — Load unpacked from the ZIP

  1. Download Vantage-v0.4.0.zip.
  2. Right-click → Extract All → permanent folder (don't delete it).
  3. chrome://extensions → Developer mode → Load unpacked → pick the folder.

Extension ID: hkfepknnglonkidihcoicdfkjkjfnejn. CRX signed with the same self-host RSA-2048 key as v0.1.0 and v0.3.0 — upgrades preserve user data.

Why no Enterprise Policy install?

Modern Chromium (Chrome 137+, Brave 147+) silently filters non-Chrome-Web-Store update URLs out of ExtensionInstallForcelist AND ExtensionSettings. The registry policy is accepted but never propagates to the extension service. The PowerShell installer above uses --load-extension shortcut modification instead, which works on every Chromium browser.
