Same here, I do this now

export const authMiddleware = createMiddleware({ type: "function" }).server(
  async ({ next }) => {
    const session = await getSessionFn();

    if (!session?.user) {
      throw new Error("Unauthorized");
    }
    return next({ context: { session } });
  },
);

and I would like to return a 401, cannot figure out how, https://tanstack.com/start/latest/docs/framework/react/guide/middleware#readingmodifying-the-server-response docs here are not clear, the link goes to nowhere

I guess setResponseStatus(401) works

@dufia another way as workaround until this is fixed:

return new Response(null, { status: 401 }) as unknown as ReturnType<
  typeof next
>;
