Crashes w/ Building Gadgets + Inventory Cables #463
Description
Modpack ATM10 TTS, version 1.8
SFM version 4.28
Single player server
I'm not sure if this is more relevant to Building Gadgets or SFM, but when using the Exchanging Gadget to exchange blocks for inventory cables in a large factory, I'm experiencing crashes where I cannot get back into the game. I've noticed if I use the gadget for only a couple of blocks at a time, it is fine. I experienced the crash a couple times. The first time I was replacing maybe 9 blocks at a time, and the second I might have done 15.
I don't understand how to read crash logs and whatnot, but through ChatGPT, I was able to identify a particular block the first time causing the issue. I had to remove all of the FTB mods from my install, which allowed me to login, then remove the block (in the first case it was a MI Polarizer). I then logged out and added the FTB mods back, logged back in and was able to replace the block and play as normal. Through the troubleshooting I had tried multiple things like updating mods within the pack and repairing the profile, so I'm not sure if some weird combination of that came into play, but it seems like this was the main thing that did it.
Now, for a little bit I learned my lesson and didn't use my gadgets for large replacements, but after doing some other stuff and cleaning up some lag in a different area, I got a bit cocky and went in again with it. This time, ChatGPT kept identifying multiple blocks, which I'd remove, then it would just identify another. Eventually I removed my whole factory and program (via the above process of first removing FTB mods to log in), which seemed to work. However, when I replaced the factory with the FTB mods reinstalled, it crashed again.
I did test logging in and rebuilding the cable network, as well as removing only the programming disk, but that made no difference. Only removing the factory helped. That being said, I'm not really sure what the core problem is. Here are my guesses:
- problem with Building Gadgets + SFM
- problem with something with FTB
- cable network is too large
- poorly optimized program
- a combination of the above?
The following files are: the exterior and interior of the large factory, and the placement of the factory block (was sitting on top of the redstone clock below the energy cube), the program for the factory, and the last crash log (after removing only the program but not the factory).

My next test was to see if removing excess inventory cables helped (since I was trying to even them up in case I wanted to add more later), so I removed any cables that weren't necessary for what was currently connected to my factory. This still resulted in a crash:

And the last test, I created a new factory block, but it didn't help.
Some last minute thoughts I have to add:
- The factory block worked just fine until exchanging some cobblestone with inventory blocks to expand the cable network, but reducing to that prior network doesn't help. It seems like something was corrupted and saved into the network when this happened.
- There is another factory/network above this factory, in the same chunk. I'm not sure if that would be relevant (like too much going on in one chunk). It spans basically as far as this factory does, but there's nowhere near as much going on. All it does is provide fuel to Extreme Reactors (2 9x9x20 reactors and 1 9x9x20 turbine all reinforced) and handle lithium production between about maybe 12 thermal evaporation plants.
Also, I apologize if the main issue is within Building Gadgets, FTB, or ATM10 TTS; just let me know if this is something that needs reported to any of them as well/instead. Thanks!
As of now, I think my factory is unable to be saved. My best solution was to pick a recent backup, and I'll likely not expand my factory until I'm more sure of the issue (because frankly it's a lot of work debugging these crashes since it takes so long for the modpack to load up every time I wanna check something). I'm just gonna let it gather what resources it can for the time being and work on another mod within the pack until I'm sure it's safe to continue my MI stuff.
