Download

Inlet-1.10.0.pkg: one installer for every Mac, Apple silicon and Intel alike. Needs macOS 13 Ventura or later.

Install

  1. Open the .pkg and follow the steps: Continue, Agree, Install, then enter your Mac password.
  2. Inlet opens by itself when it's done. Look for its icon in the menu bar.
  3. When asked, allow Inlet to access your Downloads folder.

The first time, macOS may say it can't verify the installer. Inlet is free and not signed with a paid Apple certificate. Right-click the .pkg → Open → Open. No Open button? Try once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

Updating: run the new installer. It asks you to quit Inlet first. Your settings, rules and history are kept.

Prefer to build it yourself? See the README.

What's new in 1.10.0

The Shelf is now its own app

  • The Shelf has moved out of Inlet into Ledge, a small separate app (under 1 MB, instead of Inlet's 200+) that looks and works just the same: hover over the notch, drag things to it, or press ⌃⌥S.
  • Anything on your Shelf comes across the first time you open Ledge. Until then, it's kept safe.
  • Inlet goes back to what it does best: keeping Downloads tidy and finding your files. Add to Shelf in Find, the Shelf settings and Show Shelf in the menu bar are gone.

On 1.9.x? Inlet will offer this update itself. Click Update in the sidebar card or the menu bar menu. Want to keep the Shelf? Get Ledge too.

Your files never leave your Mac. No account, no cloud, no tracking.

What's new in 1.9.1

Shelf fixes

  • Drag a file towards the notch and the Shelf opens before you reach it, so there's room to drop. Before, you had to land exactly on the notch. (#17)
  • Whatever you're dragging stays in front of the Shelf instead of disappearing behind it. (#18)
  • Space previews and closes reliably every time. ← → and clicking another item show that item, not the one you started with. (#19)

On 1.9.0? Inlet will offer this update itself. Click Update in the sidebar card or the menu bar menu.

Your files never leave your Mac. No account, no cloud, no tracking.

What's new in 1.9.0

Updates, right in the app

The update dialog

  • Inlet tells you when a new version is out, with what's new, in a card in the sidebar and in the menu bar.
  • Click Update: Inlet downloads the installer, checks it matches the release on GitHub, and opens it. Your settings, rules and history are kept.
  • Not now? Choose Later, or Skip this version. Or check any time with Inlet → Check for Updates….
  • The only thing Inlet asks the internet is whether there's a new version. Nothing about you or your files is sent. Turn it off in Settings → Updates.

Updating from 1.8.0 or earlier? Run this installer by hand one last time. From 1.9.0 on, Inlet tells you about new versions itself.

Also new since 1.7.0: the Shelf (1.8.0)

  • Drop files, folders, text or links on the notch to keep them for a moment, then drag them out or paste them anywhere. Open it by hovering, dropping something on it, or pressing ⌃⌥S. Space previews.

Your files never leave your Mac. No account, no cloud, no tracking.

What's new in 1.8.0

The Shelf: a drawer in the notch

The Shelf

  • A place at the top of your screen to keep things for a moment. Drop files, folders, text or links on the notch (or the middle of the top edge on a Mac without one), and it opens like the Dynamic Island.
  • Take them off where they're needed: drag items out one at a time or several at once, or select them, press ⌘C, and ⌘V pastes the files themselves in Finder, Mail, Slack and more.
  • Open it by hovering over the notch, pressing ⌃⌥S from any app, or choosing Show Shelf in the menu bar. With the Shelf open, ⌘V adds whatever you copied.
  • Space previews an item with Quick Look, and ← → flip through them, as in Finder.
  • Nothing is copied or moved. The Shelf only points to your files and keeps its contents when you quit. Turn it off in Settings → Shelf.
  • Found something with Find? Select it and choose Add to Shelf.

Everything stays on your Mac. No account, no cloud, no tracking.

What's new since 1.5.1

Find files by describing them (1.7.0)

  • New Find page (⌘F): type what you remember, like “pdfs from github last week”, “the contract I signed in July” or “big videos I haven’t opened in a month”.
  • Inlet shows what it understood as chips you can remove, and says why each file matched and where it came from.
  • Select results to gather them into a folder (undoable with ⌘Z), preview them with Space, drag them out, or copy their paths.
  • Code projects are left out unless you ask, so searches stay fast.
  • One installer for every Mac, Apple silicon and Intel, that walks you through the install and opens Inlet when it's done.

Inlet remembers where files came from (1.6.0)

  • Inlet notes which website and app each download came from the moment it arrives, even in Manual mode.
  • Files you unzip keep the website of the archive they came from. macOS forgets that; Inlet doesn't.
  • Hover over a file in Organize or Activity to see where it came from. Website rules now work for unzipped files too.
  • Settings → Download history: see what's recorded, choose how long to keep it, export it, or clear it. It never leaves your Mac.

Everything stays on your Mac. No account, no cloud, no tracking.

What's in Inlet

The first public build. Inlet sorts your Downloads into tidy folders, either automatically as files finish downloading or with one click after a preview. It never deletes or overwrites anything, and every action can be undone (⌘Z works too).

  • Manual, Auto, and scheduled tidying
  • Watch Desktop or other folders, each with its own mode
  • Rules by name, website, kind, size, age or the text inside a file, with optional renaming
  • Suggested rules, learned from how you correct it in the app and in Finder
  • Cleanup of old and duplicate files, with 30 days to undo
  • Export, import and iCloud sync of your rules
