Lumen v1.5.0: Refined

Lumen v1.5.0 is a complete architectural rebuild of the desktop client and indexing pipeline. We stripped secondary window dependencies, eliminated multi-megabyte heap allocation bottlenecks, added progressive-disclosure keyboard ergonomics, and unified the interface onto native Windows 11 Desktop Acrylic glass.

Highlights & Key Features

1. Unified Single-Window Architecture (Zero Dispatcher Crashes)

  • Single-HWND Canvas: Eliminated SettingsWindow completely. The entire application now operates within a single native window handle (HWND) and a single DispatcherQueue, permanently eradicating the WinUI 3 CoreMessagingXP.dll 0xc000027b multi-window fail-fast crash.
  • In-Place Spring Transition: Pressing Ctrl + , or typing preferences executes an in-place view flip on the DWM compositor thread, swapping between the Search canvas and Preferences canvas without tearing down the visual tree or clearing your search state.
  • Native DWM Window Dragging: Intercepts mouse coordinates via Win32 WM_SYSCOMMAND (SC_MOVE | HTCAPTION). Drag the window from any non-interactive surface with zero mouse-sticking or pointer-lock bugs.

2. Zero-Allocation Search Engine (46,800× Heap Reduction)

  • Benchmark-Verified SIMD Token Matching: Replaced naive LINQ iteration with a zero-allocation indexed loop with early exit.
  • Benchmark Results (100,000 files):
    • Heap Allocations: Reduced from 12,000,384 Bytes (~12MB) down to 256 Bytes per query.
    • Garbage Collection: Dropped from 1,429 Gen 0 pauses per 1,000 searches to ZERO (0) collections.
    • Execution Latency: Dropped from 6.90ms to 3.31ms for multi-word unordered token matching across entire drive tables.

3. Incremental FTS5 Document Indexing

  • Timestamp MTime Cache: SQLite FTS5 document indexing now checks file LastWriteTimeUtc ticks prior to extraction. Unmodified documents are skipped in 0.01 milliseconds.
  • Target Scoping: Filtered document candidate discovery strictly to user profiles (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Custom paths), eliminating redundant parsing of 20,000+ system files in AppData and Program Files.
  • Stable Idle Footprint: Background indexing settles into an Idle state within seconds, dropping background memory to a stable working set baseline (~575MB holding 2.8M files and 25K full-text documents).

4. Progressive Disclosure & Intentional Aesthetics

  • Staggered Filter Pills: A cascading row of semantic filter pills (All, Docs, Images, Videos, Audio, Folders, and Drives) drops down from behind the search bar only when typing begins, animated with cubic-bezier(0.17, 0.73, 0.24, 1) and a 22ms per-pill delay.
  • Orthogonal Drive Scoping: Drives ▾ features a native flyout dropdown allowing users to scope searches to specific volumes (e.g. C:, D:) while simultaneously combining category filters (e.g. searching only Images on D:).
  • Native Desktop Acrylic: Replaced opaque Mica fallback with DesktopAcrylicBackdrop, restoring real-time frosted glass transparency over desktop wallpapers and underlying windows.
  • Semantic File Categories & Left-Edge Ambient Glow: File icons and cards feature color-coded category identities with a soft left-to-right gradient wash:
    • 🔵 Documents: Electric Cerulean (#3B82F6)
    • 🟢 Images: Emerald Green (#10B981)
    • 🟡 Audio: Warm Amber (#F59E0B)
    • 🟣 Video: Electric Violet (#A855F7)
    • 🔷 Code / Data: Cyan (#06B6D4)
    • 🌿 Drives / Folders: Neon Mint (#84CC16)
  • FTS5 In-Content Gradient Badge: Matches found inside the text of documents are highlighted with a glowing emerald-to-teal [ 📄 Text Match ] gradient badge.
  • Clean Breadcrumb Hierarchy: Redundant filenames are stripped from paths, rendering clean chevron breadcrumbs (~ › Documents › Projects).

5. Context-Aware 44px Action Footer

  • Idle State: Displays passive keyboard navigation cues (Navigate ↑↓, Dismiss Esc, Preferences Ctrl+,).
  • Selected State: Automatically cross-fades to actionable verbs (Open ↵, Copy Path Ctrl+C, Copy File Ctrl+Shift+C) the instant an item is highlighted.
  • First-Item Auto-Select: Search results auto-select the top result on population, allowing instant execution on Enter without touching arrow keys.

🛠️ Verification & Quality Gates

Lumen v1.5.0 was compiled and verified through our automated CI verification pipeline:

  • Unit & FTS5 Tests: 50/50 automated test assertions passed.
  • Architecture Rules: NetArchTest verified that Lumen.Shared maintains zero UI dependencies.
  • E2E UI Automation: FlaUI UIA3 automated test suite launched LumenApp.exe, verified the search canvas, and confirmed graceful shutdown.
