Beta 0.2 — Stable ALVR 20.14.1
Galaxy XR USB streaming using the official, unmodified ALVR stable 20.14.1 Windows server and an adapted OpenXR headset client.
Start here
- Download Galaxy-XR-ALVR.apk and Galaxy-XR-ALVR-beta-0.2-setup.zip below. Extract the setup ZIP and read START-HERE.txt and README.md.
- Download the official ALVR stable 20.14.1 Windows server ZIP. Do not mix this APK with nightly or other server versions.
- Download Windows Android platform-tools, enable USB debugging, and accept the headset's debugging prompt.
- Install the APK, run Connect-USB.ps1, and trust the headset using manual address 127.0.0.1 and TCP in the PC dashboard. Start SteamVR from ALVR.
The launcher is ALVR Stable Test (alvr.client.stabletest). This is compressed VR streaming, not DisplayPort input; SteamVR is required.
Recommended tested RTX 3090 profile
HEVC/H.265, 8-bit SDR, HDR off, 72 Hz, 2560 x 2560 per eye, constant 375 Mbps target, both foveated encoding and client-side foveation off. Rig: i7-11700K / RTX 3090, NVIDIA driver 595.71. Start lower on other rigs.
Short 60-second captures averaged approximately 315 Mbps over USB and 317 Mbps over Wi-Fi, with zero ALVR-reported packet loss in each. The owner reported both as smooth. Wi-Fi status reported 6 GHz Wi-Fi 7, not a verified Wi-Fi 6E run. A 450 Mbps Wi-Fi target produced jitter. See the bundled README for frame-rate/latency measurements and comparison limitations. Zero reported loss is not zero dropped frames or TCP retransmissions; 375 Mbps is a target, not measured sustained traffic.
Crash recovery
If SteamVR crashes on first launch or after changing quality, it may disable the ALVR add-on. Re-enable ALVR under SteamVR Settings > Startup/Shutdown > Manage Add-ons, then restart SteamVR. Alternatively, close SteamVR completely and run ALVR-Unblock.ps1. The helper backs up SteamVR settings and clears only ALVR's safe-mode block. Restore the last working quality setting if needed; the helper does not fix the original crash.
Signing and provenance
This release distributes the exact CI APK installed and tested on the headset, from CI run 35135651182 (this run predates the repository, and its logs are not public). Its source was PR head d430eac; subsequent merged changes updated documentation only. Release tag targets merged commit 945c858. BUILD-INFO.txt preserves original build provenance; RELEASE-INFO.txt explains the mapping.
The APK uses an ephemeral CI debug key. It cannot update a client signed with a different key. Save what you need before uninstalling only ALVR Stable Test; uninstalling deletes that app's data. Other CI builds may have different signatures. Retained production release signing is not configured.
APK signature/checksum and privacy audit passed. Both bundled PowerShell scripts were privacy-scanned and manually reviewed. No private keys, personal configurations, device identifiers, or raw logs are included. Source patch is MIT; third-party notices are included. Beta 0.1 remains available, but uses the older client baseline.
Beta 0.1
Galaxy XR ALVR USB -- Beta 0.1
An early proof of concept for streaming Windows SteamVR content to Samsung Galaxy
XR over an ADB-forwarded USB data connection. It uses a patched Galaxy XR client
and an unmodified ALVR server. This is compressed streaming, not DisplayPort input,
and does not bypass SteamVR.
Download Galaxy-XR-ALVR.apk and Galaxy-XR-ALVR-beta-0.1-setup.zip. Extract the setup
ZIP and read README.md or START-HERE.txt before installing. SHA256SUMS.txt verifies
the original CI-built APK. BUILD-INFO.txt records its exact build source.

Use our patched APK, NOT the upstream APK from that release.
Build provenance:
CI run: 35104018841 (this run predates the repository, and its logs are not public)
APK project commit: 183a5960adefe4a598a201fe7e7b89d25849e66c (as recorded in BUILD-INFO.txt; not in this repository's history)
ALVR source commit: ca2decae968f2fd37b43b777cca4ba597808ba52
Release source also includes later README/download-instruction updates only.
The patch, workflow and build script are unchanged from the successful CI build.
Verified: CI build checks, downloaded APK checksum, USB connection to SteamVR and
correct picture in both eyes on one Galaxy XR/RTX 3090 setup. For the headset test,
the CI APK was locally re-signed without recompiling to preserve existing app data.
The APK published here retains its original CI signature, not the local test key.
The official nightly server binary has not been tested here; our demonstrated
unmodified server was locally built from its same source commit.
Known limitations:
- Temporary debug signing: an existing differently signed client cannot be updated
directly. Uninstalling deletes app data; save settings before choosing to do so. - A normal headset reboot was needed to clear a Starting headset/black-screen stall.
- Off-head sleep interrupted an active stream after roughly 80 seconds, even with
the sensor covered. Eye detection has not been established as the cause. - Sustained gameplay, controller completeness, other hardware and 500 Mbps are
untested. The visually accepted high target was HEVC, 72 Hz, 2560 x 2560 per eye,
200 Mbps, SDR, foveated encoding disabled; actual sustained Mbps was not measured.
Source patch: MIT. Upstream and third-party component licenses remain applicable.
The setup ZIP includes ALVR dependency notices from the exact-source official
package and the generic Khronos OpenXR loader license. No signing keys included.
