Hacktoberfest 2026: 7-Day DevOps Contribution Challenge

Timeline: October 1-7, 2026 (kickoff week of Hacktoberfest)
Goal: Onboard new contributors with a structured 7-day challenge. Each day has a simple task (5-15 minutes, no coding required).

7-Day Challenge

Day 1: Add Yourself

Add your profile to the DevOps Engineers Directory on the site. Submit a JSON file with your name, bio, skills, links, and optional "available for hire" flag.

• You get: a profile page on devops-daily.com/engineers + backlink to your site
• Bonus: Follow @thedevopsdaily on X/LinkedIn and share your "I joined" post tagging us

Day 2: Add Your Favorite Tool

Add a DevOps tool you love to the Toolbox page. Name, description, link, category.

Day 3: Fix Something

Find and fix a typo, broken link, or formatting issue in any existing post or guide. Pre-labeled `good-first-issue` issues available.

Day 4: Add Quiz Questions

Add 3 questions to an existing quiz. JSON format, multiple choice with explanations.

Day 5: Add Flashcards

Add 5 flashcards to an existing flashcard set. Front/back format in JSON.

Day 6: Share a Tip

Add a practical "tip" or "gotcha" to an existing blog post or guide. Something you learned the hard way.

Day 7: Share Your Stack

Write a short markdown profile of your DevOps setup/stack - what tools you use, how they fit together, and why.

Social Media Integration

• Registration: Star the repo + follow on at least one social platform (X, LinkedIn, Instagram)
• Daily sharing: Share your PR on social media with #Hacktoberfest #DevOpsDaily - contributors promote us organically while getting visibility on their own profiles
• Newsletter: Subscribe to get daily challenge reminders
• Leaderboard: Bonus points for social shares (tracked via hashtag)

Preparation Checklist (Before October)

Repository Setup

• Add `hacktoberfest` topic to the GitHub repo
• Create `hacktoberfest`, `good-first-issue`, `day-1` through `day-7` labels
• Create issue templates for each day's task with clear instructions
• Pre-create 5-10 `good-first-issue` issues (typos, broken links, outdated info)

New Features Needed

• DevOps Engineers Directory page (`/engineers`) - JSON-based profiles with name, bio, skills, links, hire flag
• "Contributors" section on the site showing Hacktoberfest participants
• Challenge landing page at `/hacktoberfest` with daily tasks, leaderboard, and social links

• Toolbox entry template
• Quiz question JSON template (with example)
• Flashcard JSON template (with example)
• Stack profile markdown template

Documentation

• Update CONTRIBUTING.md with Hacktoberfest-specific instructions
• "How to submit your first PR" guide for absolute beginners
• Local preview guide (`pnpm dev` + where to find your content)

• Landing page on devops-daily.com/hacktoberfest
• Social media announcements (X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Reddit)
• Newsletter announcement + daily reminders during the event
• DEV.to / Hashnode cross-post
• Reddit posts in r/devops, r/kubernetes, r/docker, r/hacktoberfest

Recognition

• Contributors listed on the site with links to their profiles
• "Top Contributor" highlight in the weekly newsletter
• Digital badges for completing each day
• Swag consideration (stickers) for completing all 7 days

Success Metrics

• Number of PRs submitted and merged
• Number of unique contributors
• New GitHub stars during the event
