This is a whole new GammaOS

v1.4 is not an incremental update. On the RG Rotate, GammaOS Nano is the primary UI (https://thegammasqueeze.github.io/GammaOSNano-WIKI), and it is not a launcher, it is a whole micro-OS built on top of Android. It grabs the panel the instant you power on and paints a full console-style home, but underneath it is deeply integrated with the low-level Android system and the device hardware: DRM-direct rendering straight to the panel, an early-boot audio engine that sounds before the rest of the system is even up, native power and sleep management, and direct control of the panel and the slide sensor. There is no heavy Android launcher loading in the background, no bloat, and no waiting. It boots straight to a console-style experience that is fast, lean and built for a controller first.

The RG Rotate ships with the full GammaOS Next underneath, so you are never locked in: you can switch freely between GammaOS Nano and the full GammaOS Next Android experience whenever you like.

Known Issues

  • In some cases the patched SPL might incorrectly try to boot from an invalid OS SD card, causing a black screen on boot or reboot. In those cases, remove the SD card and reboot the device by holding Volume Down and Power until it reboots. The will be fixed as a separate patch. UPDATE: This has been patched with the ums512_1h10_rg_rotate_gammaos_1.4_splpatched image.
  • DraStic RetroAchievements currently supports Softcore mode only. Hardcore mode is pending approval from the RetroAchievements team, which can take up to around 6 months if they agree to it.

What's New in v1.4

DraStic-nano: faster DS emulation with RetroAchievements

The built-in Nintendo DS player has had a major performance pass on Android, with smoother frame pacing and lower overhead on the RG Rotate. It now also supports RetroAchievements (Softcore), so you can unlock achievements while you play. Hardcore mode is pending approval from the RetroAchievements team (roughly 6 months if they agree). Quick Resume lets you jump straight back into your last DS game right where you left off, with the save-state handoff held behind a clean preview so there is no black flash on return.

Two flavors: Full and Lite

GammaOS Nano on the RG Rotate comes in two flavors, so you can pick the balance you want:

  • Full - includes Google Play Store, Google Play Services and Google sign-in, for people who rely on account sync and Play Store apps.
  • Lite - ships without Google Services for the leanest, cleanest boot-to-play experience, ideal if you sideload or use alternative stores.

Both flavors boot into GammaOS Nano as the primary UI and let you switch to the full GammaOS Next Android experience at any time.

Three full home themes

GammaOS Nano gives you three complete home themes, and you can switch between them at any time:

  • DSi System Menu - a faithful Nintendo DSi home, with the tile carousel, glossy blue selection frame and DSi-style settings and dialogs.
  • PS3 XMB - a 1:1 recreation of the PlayStation 3 XrossMediaBar, complete with the animated wave wallpaper, glass icons with live light refraction, the analog clock and the authentic menu animations.
  • Minima - clean, fast, minimalist themes inspired by MinUI and NextUI for people who just want to get into their games with zero fuss.

The slide mechanism and Clock UI

In Nano mode the RG Rotate's sliding screen becomes a first-class control. Under Settings > Slide Behaviour you choose what happens when you slide the screen: rotate the display, sleep or wake, launch an app, or summon the clock. Slide the Rotate shut and Nano paints a large, glowing PSP-style Clock UI over the panel, turning the device into a desk clock, with a live backdrop that refracts what is behind it and a subtle motion-sensor parallax. Slide it back open and you drop straight back to where you were.

Custom wallpapers, including video wallpapers

Set your own wallpaper behind the XMB and DSi homes, picked from your photo library. You can use a looping video wallpaper on screen, dimmed to taste with an adjustable scrim so your icons and text stay readable. Every frosted panel, glass icon and the clock samples your chosen wallpaper so it all stays consistent.

In-game overlay on a power-button hold

No matter what you are playing, hold the power button to bring up the overlay menu right over your game. It dims the game behind it while it keeps running, so you can adjust brightness, change performance mode, jump into Quick Settings, or close and switch apps without losing your place, then dismiss it and drop straight back in.

Improved sleep mode

Sleep and wake have been reworked to be faster and more reliable. The device suspends properly, wakes cleanly and holds far less battery drain during standby, so you can put it down mid-game and pick it up later without the long idle and resume problems of the previous build.

Built-in media, browser and more

Nano includes self-contained music, video and photo players, a controller-first web browser, IPTV and Internet Radio, system-wide Network Shares (SMB/NFS/WebDAV/FTP that behave like local storage), and a global search across your games and media. Boot speed and memory use have also been improved across the board.

Boot Linux from the SD card (custom SPL)

This release adds support for a custom SPL (the low-level bootloader) for the RG Rotate, from the ums512_spl project. The custom SPL can boot U-Boot from the SD card, which in turn opens the door to booting a full Linux from the SD card on the RG Rotate.

Noxwell (Beebono) has ported the latest mainline Linux kernel to the device and published an unofficial ROCKNIX build you can boot from SD:

This is not an official ROCKNIX build. Please do not contact the ROCKNIX team about it. All Linux and ROCKNIX-on-RG-Rotate issues should be reported at the rg-rotate-linux repository, not through the official ROCKNIX channels.

You do not need GammaOS to run Linux on the RG Rotate. The custom SPL is included in GammaOS purely for ease of use, so you can get up and running from the SD card without flashing the bootloader separately.

Before You Download

This release comes in two flavors: Full (with Google Services) and Lite (no Google Services). Both are included in a single download, and both boot into GammaOS Nano as the primary UI and let you switch to the full GammaOS Next Android experience freely. You pick which one to flash.

Download the package

The firmware ships as a single split archive (3 parts) that contains both the Full and Lite builds. Download all three parts:

Extract

Extract all three parts together (right-click the .001 while .002 and .003 are in the same folder and extract). You will get two .pac files:

  • ums512_1h10_rg_rotate_gammaos_1.4_full_splpatched.pac - Full (with Google Services)
  • ums512_1h10_rg_rotate_gammaos_1.4_lite_splpatched.pac - Lite (no Google Services)

Flash whichever one you want.

Note: Installing will wipe all data. Back up your device first.
Remove any microSD card before flashing to avoid issues.

Overview

GammaOS Nano v1.4 is a ground-up rebuild of the RG Rotate experience, based on Android 14 / LineageOS 21. Rather than loading a heavy Android launcher, v1.4 boots straight into a native, console-style home built for handhelds, with the full GammaOS Next Android experience one switch away. This release focuses on a fast boot-to-play experience, three full home themes, a much-improved DraStic DS player with RetroAchievements, the slide mechanism with its PSP-style Clock UI, custom and video wallpapers, and a lean footprint in Full (with Google Services) and Lite (without) flavors. It also bundles a custom SPL that lets the RG Rotate boot U-Boot, and in turn Linux, from the SD card.
