ZTally v0.1.0
Where did the day go? ZTally is a free, private screen-time tracker for Windows and Linux. It sits in the tray, notices which app and website you're actually looking at, sorts it into categories, and shows your day as a clock you can read at a glance.
No account, no cloud, no telemetry, no update checks. Nothing leaves your computer.
This is the first public release. 🎉
Highlights
- The Dial: today as a 24-hour ring, painted minute by minute in category colours, with away time hatched and focus streaks marked. Hover any minute to see what was in front of you.
- Passive tracking: no timers to start. Idle time is detected automatically, but a video, call or game making sound in front of you doesn't count as away.
- Automatic categories: hundreds of built-in rules for apps and sites. Right-click or drag anything to refile it, and history repaints instantly.
- Background audio & calls: Spotify behind your editor, a YouTube tab in another window, a Discord call during a game. It's all recorded separately, with what you did meanwhile, and never added to screen time. ZTally only notices that the microphone is in use; it never records audio.
- Focus sessions: 25, 50 or 90 minutes, with a gentle nudge when you drift and a report at the end.
- Goals: daily or weekly budgets ("at most 45m of Social") and targets ("at least 4h of Deep Work").
- Every scale: a weekly ribbon, a month calendar and a year heatmap.
- Receipts: a day, week, month or hand-picked days, itemised like a till slip. Save as PNG, print, or export CSV and JSON.
- Browser extension (optional): ZTally Bridge gives exact sites and which tabs play sound. There's a guided setup for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera and Firefox.
- Make it yours: 5 styles (Chronograph, Nocturne, Verdant, Rosé, Graphite), each dark and light; sharp or round corners, 3 fonts, interface size, reduced motion.
- 6 languages: English, Deutsch, Español, Français, Português (Brasil), 日本語.
- Small & light: a ~4 MB installer. Closing the window frees the UI; only the tray and tracker keep running.
- Your data, your call: turn window titles off, ignore apps, forget the last hour, a day, chosen days or everything.

Install
Windows: run the installer. It installs for your user only (no admin rights) and sets up WebView2 if it's missing.
Linux:
sudo apt install ./ZTally_0.1.0_amd64.deb # Debian / Ubuntu
sudo dnf install ./ZTally-0.1.0-1.x86_64.rpm # Fedora
chmod +x ZTally_0.1.0_amd64.AppImage && ./ZTally_0.1.0_amd64.AppImageBrowser extension: open ZTally → Settings → Browser → Set up extension. It walks you through it for your browser.
Good to know
- Windows SmartScreen may say "unknown publisher" because the installer isn't code-signed yet. Choose More info → Run anyway, or check the file against
SHA256SUMSfirst. - Linux requirements: x86_64 with glibc 2.35 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 and later).
- Linux desktops: fully supported on X11 (any desktop) and KDE Plasma (X11 and Wayland). GNOME on Wayland (via a small bundled Shell extension), Sway and Hyprland are experimental. Feedback is very welcome.
- Background audio & call detection on Linux needs
pactl(packagepulseaudio-utils; also needed with PipeWire). Without it, ZTally falls back to media players only. - Firefox removes temporary add-ons on restart, so you'd load the extension again after each restart.
- Your data lives in
~/.local/share/ztally/(Linux) or%LOCALAPPDATA%\ztally\(Windows).
