The first public release, for the Mac and for Windows.

My Photo Library Described is a screen-reader-friendly photo library app. It shows your photos the way Finder or File Explorer shows files, in a list or a gallery, and describes each photo as you move to it, using the AI built into your computer: Apple Intelligence on a Mac, Windows AI on a Copilot+ PC. Your photos aren't uploaded to describe them.

What it does

  • Describes photos as you move. Arrow to a photo and pause: you hear the photo (in the list, its row; in the gallery, its position, or whatever you choose in View > Labels…), then what's in it. Descriptions are saved, so each photo is described once. Describe Photo (Command-D / Ctrl+D) and Redescribe (Command-R / Ctrl+R) are there when you want them.
  • Describes the whole library in the background, if you turn on Photo > Describe Photos in the Background: newest first, carrying on across restarts, so descriptions are ready when you get to them.
  • Read the description your way. The Description panel shows it in a box you can read by line, word or character (with a braille display, say), and correct. Shift-Command-D / Ctrl+Shift+D goes there and back, and Next and Previous Photo step through photos while you stay in the box. Edit > Copy Description (Shift-Command-C / Ctrl+Shift+C) copies descriptions as text.
  • Remembers where each description came from. With every description, the app keeps which AI made it, or that you wrote or corrected it, what it was asked, the model and versions, and when. This stays on your computer.
  • Choose what you hear. View > Labels… chooses and orders the list's columns, and what the gallery reads as you move.
  • Your photos stay as they are. Every launch starts in Read-Only Mode. Captions, and alt text in the IPTC accessibility fields, are written into your photos only when you allow changes, and only by commands you choose or by Save Descriptions in Photos, which asks first. Nothing anyone wrote is ever replaced without asking. They go into JPEG, PNG, TIFF and HEIC files, iPhone and Pixel HDR photos included, changing nothing else in the file.
  • Your Photos library or Pictures folders, plus any folders you add.
  • Place names, if you want them. Look Up Place Names is off until you turn it on. Then Get Info, and the Place Taken column or gallery label, name where a photo was taken.
  • Help when something's wrong. Check System says whether your computer can describe photos and what to do if not; Check AI Description tests it on a sample photo; Report a Bug files a report with what we need, and sends it for you.

What you need

  • Mac: macOS 27 or later on Apple silicon, with Apple Intelligence turned on.
  • Windows: Windows 11 version 24H2 or later on a Copilot+ PC.

If the AI isn't available, the app still browses and shows your photos; it just doesn't describe them.

Installing

  • Mac: download My-Photo-Library-Described-0.2.0-mac.dmg, open it and move the app to your Applications folder. It's signed by Kelly Ford and notarized by Apple. Help > Check for Updates finds newer versions.
  • Windows: open MyPhotoLibraryDescribed.appinstaller. App Installer installs the app and keeps it up to date.

The user guide explains how to use the app. The privacy policy lists everything the app sends over the internet, and when.
