Mareshine 1.4.0

@TheM3dium TheM3dium released this 18 Oct 17:02

What's new: sync between your devices

  • Sync through one file: Settings → OTHER → SYNC keeps your game saves, save states and achievements the same on several devices. Create the sync file once (for example in Google Drive, Dropbox or Nextcloud) and choose the same file on your other devices. Mareshine syncs when it starts and when you leave the game. No account is needed in Mareshine.
  • Wi-Fi sync: devices without a cloud (such as TVs) sync directly with each other in the same Wi-Fi. Open the Wi-Fi sync on both devices, choose the other one and enter the code it shows.
  • Nothing gets lost: if a save changed on both devices, the newer one wins and the other is kept in sync-backups/ in your data folder. Achievements are merged, so no unlock is lost.
  • SYNC in the quick menu: with a sync file set up, the quick menu sends your progress during the game. Changes from other devices arrive the next time you are in the main menu.
  • 20:9 widescreen: Graphics → Widescreen now offers 20:9, and the entry for your own screen shows its shape in a familiar form (for example "≈ 20:9").
  • Cutscene frames on wide phones: a movie's own frame now fits around the movie on screens wider than 16:9, with a plain colour at the sides.
  • Reopening the app while the game still runs in the background brings the game back without syncing first.

What's new: smoother on weaker devices

  • Faster touch controls: the on-screen buttons were redrawn and uploaded again every frame. Now they are uploaded once, which saves about 5 ms per frame on an NVIDIA Shield TV. It holds a steady 30 FPS there now, with clearly fewer stutters.
  • Lighter anti-aliasing (MSAA): the game no longer resolves the depth buffer when it does not need it, which saves memory bandwidth on phones.
  • Performance hints (Android 13 and later): the game tells Android how much work each frame takes, so the CPU clocks follow the game.
  • Performance overlay: Settings → OTHER → PERFORMANCE shows the frame rate and the frame time, and writes them to the log.
  • HIDE button: the former HUD button now hides all other touch controls (and SHOW brings them back) instead of changing their opacity.
  • Quick menu: the bar reaches the top and both sides of the screen, and its entries always fit in one row.
  • Touch layout editor: the controls are shown as big as in the game, and a changed layout applies as soon as you go back to the game. The default Z button sits next to R.
  • Clearer settings: shorter descriptions without technical details.

What's new: achievements

  • 101 achievements of Mareshine's own: offline and without an account. They cover the story, every boss (once beaten, and once more without taking a hit), the worlds, milestones, some fun ones and a few secret ones.
    • An older save unlocks what it already has as soon as you load it.
    • An unlock shows a banner with a sound from the game itself, played from your own disc.
    • Find them in Settings → ACHIEVEMENTS, where they can also be turned off, and in the quick menu while you play.
    • They are kept in an open format (docs/ACHIEVEMENTS-FORMAT.md) that other programs can share.
  • Skip any movie with START twice: the first press shows a small hint, the second skips the movie, even one you have not seen yet.
  • Quick menu: now a bar at the top, as in Dusklight. To open it:
    • On a controller, tap Select. Select held with R1 or L1 still saves or loads a state.
    • On a touchscreen, swipe down with three fingers.
    • On a remote, press Back.
    • A hint says how when the game starts.
  • System buttons: the controller settings list the hotkey, quick save, quick load and quick menu in a section of their own, marked red until you set them up.

What's new: save states

  • Five slots: in the pause menu, Save States lists them with a picture, the stage and the time. Save into a slot, load it, delete it, or make it the quick slot (★).
  • Quick save and quick load:
    • Touch: the small SAVE and LOAD buttons at the top right (hold LOAD a moment). Move or hide them in the touch layout editor.
    • Controller: hold the hotkey (Select) and press R1 to save or L1 to load. All three can be changed in the button mapping. Select is no longer a second Z button; Z stays on L1.
    • Keyboard: F5 saves, F6 loads.
  • Exact or by position: a state loads exactly (every enemy, the camera, the music) as long as the app keeps running. After the app is restarted, it puts you back where you were (the area, Mario's position, your progress), marked "position only".

States are kept in savestates/ in your data folder.

What's new

  • Subtitles in cutscenes: the movies now show their subtitles in the game's language (English, French, German, Spanish or Italian), even when they are off in the game's own options. On by default; Settings → Game → Language.
  • Updates: Mareshine checks for a new release once a day. A small box at the top left of the main menu shows it for a few seconds; click it to update (Yes / Ignore). Settings → Other → Updates has the automatic check and a "Check for updates now" button.

Install

Download Mareshine-1.2.0.apk below. If you have 1.1.0, install this one over it once; from now on Mareshine tells you about updates itself.
