Factor
The factor view page gives users an in-depth view of the social and economic factors being examined, as well as information on their correlation with different types of mortality. Users can analyze these factors on a state by state basis or view the entire country.
The box in the upper left provides text describing the selected factor, its sources, and its Kendall correlation with the selected mortality type. The box includes a drop-down which is one of two ways to select which factor is being displayed. The other way by clicking on the circles in the lollipop plot.
For the selected factor, a definition and longer description are given. To read more, users can click on the link given as the text source to be taken to a page containing more in-depth information. The source of the data is also displayed, and the displayed name acts as a link to the source website.
Below this, the Kendall correlation of the selected factor with the selected mortality is given. This is calculated for the selected state or entire country based on what is selected in the state drop-down (in the upper-right navigation bar). The p-value of this correlation is also given. The relationship between the factor and mortality will be listed as statistically significant when the p-value is less than 0.05.
When a state is selected, a map of its counties colored to display the level of the selected factor is displayed in the lower left. Clicking on a county will give you some basic statistics about the mortality rate (whether it rose or not) on the top of the graph and the factor (shown on the right of the graph). Clicking on a county will also turn its' point grey on the adjacent dot plot.
When "United States" is selected as the application-wide state, nothing is displayed here
On the right of the page, the factor correlation lollipop plot is carried over from the previous state view page. This shows the results from our Kendall Tau analysis. For the selected state, the fifteen most correlated social or economic factors with the selected cause of death are displayed. Only statistically significantly correlated factors are displayed, which may lead to less than 15 being shown.
Mousing-over a factor's circle will still give you a brief description of that factor. Clicking on a factor's circle will change the factor being viewed on this page to the that factor.
The box plot in the upper middle section shows each risk group's distribution with respect to the selected factor.
In the lower middle section, the selected factor is plotted against the selected mortality rate.
When a state is selected, this plot is a scatter plot in which each county is a dot. The dots are colored by risk group. Mousing over a dot pops up the name of the county that dot represents.
When "United States" is selected in the state drop-down, this plot is a 2-D density plot. Each of the 6 nationwide risk groups is represented with a different color.
