Abyssal 1.22.0

Choose how to reach objectives, smoother combat and chart controls, and clearer Classic graphics at 4K. This is a backward-compatible feature release under the documented Semantic Versioning policy.

  • Objective travel: choose Prefer S.T.R.E.A.M. or Open water in Settings or Destinations. Quest navigation follows that preference, while explicit chart actions keep their chosen route.
  • Ship contact: optional and off by default. Enabled contact turns vessels away without letting moving ships carry the player. Station contact retains turn-away behavior and solid collision protection.
  • Combat targets: destroyed Aquarians disappear immediately. Mission markers identify their actual targets, so an unrelated pirate no longer becomes a junk-removal waypoint.
  • Boost: a stronger camera view change and denser white engine wash make acceleration easier to feel. The camera effect can be disabled.
  • Chart controls: held directions move smoothly, including diagonals. A highlighted ring and checkmark confirm a selected area.
  • Menus: navigation wraps at list edges. The mission board remains available during an active freelance mission; accepting another job requires finishing or abandoning the current one.
  • Retro HUD: enabled by default, with saved preferences respected.
  • Classic at 4K: a smaller white sun core, softer halo and smoother water layers preserve the original bright upper water and dark downward views. Sky and surface fog use the same full-resolution colour profile.
  • New interface text is translated into all 14 non-English engine languages.

Downloads contain the engine and import tools. Supply a compatible DEEP JAR to import the original game content locally.

Linux x86-64, Linux ARM64, Windows, macOS, Web and Android packages are included, with the source archive and SHA-256 checksums. See VALIDATION.md for executed checks and platform limitations.

@TheWWWorm TheWWWorm released this 25 Oct 01:36

Abyssal 1.21.19

Sensible graphics defaults on Windows, an unlocked frame rate and the display settings in one place.

  • Automatic renderer (Windows): the default renderer is now Automatic. It starts Direct3D 12 with NVIDIA DLSS on an NVIDIA RTX graphics card and Direct3D 12 with AMD FSR on any other. The very first start runs on Vulkan, finds the graphics card and starts the game again on that renderer. A renderer that fails is left out until the graphics card or its driver changes.
  • Auto upscaling: Upscaling defaults to Auto, which picks NVIDIA DLSS, then AMD FSR 4 or FSR 3.1 where they are available, else AMD FSR 1.0 as before.
  • Upscaling modes by name: with DLSS or FSR 3.1/4, Upscaling mode offers DLAA (DLSS) or Native AA (FSR), Quality, Balanced and Performance. DLAA and Native AA are the default.
  • Restart prompt: changing the renderer offers Restart now or Later, and warns when progress since the last save would be lost.
  • Settings → Display now holds the window and performance options together: Fullscreen (remembered for the next start), aspect ratio, resolution, the new Frame rate limit (Unlimited by default, 30 to 240, or the display's refresh rate) and VSync (on by default), Show FPS, then the renderer, upscaling, frame generation, antialiasing and shadow quality.
  • Frame generation FPS: with frame generation on, the FPS counter leads with the frames displayed and names the frames drawn beside them, for example "120 FPS · 60 drawn".
  • Classic sky: the opening overhead no longer clips into a flat white disc with a hard rim; it brightens smoothly towards its centre.
  • NVIDIA and AMD attribution: the Windows splash shows the GeForce RTX badge with NVIDIA DLSS beside the AMD FSR marks, held for two and a half seconds at each start.

Downloads contain the engine and import tools; original game assets and texture packs are supplied separately.

Linux x86-64, Linux ARM64, Windows, macOS, Web and Android packages are included, along with the source archive and SHA-256 checksums. See VALIDATION.md for executed checks and platform limitations.

Abyssal 1.21.18

NVIDIA DLSS returns to the Windows package, alongside AMD FSR.

  • Direct3D 12 · NVIDIA DLSS: Settings → Graphics → Performance → Renderer now offers it next to Direct3D 12 · AMD FSR. From the next start, Upscaling lists NVIDIA DLSS on an NVIDIA RTX card. 3D resolution sets its quality: 100% is DLAA, 67% Quality, 58% Balanced and 50% Performance.
  • DLSS Frame Generation: with DLSS selected, Frame generation adds one generated frame per drawn frame while flying, where NVIDIA's runtime supports it (normally an RTX 40-series or newer card, a current driver and hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling). It turns on NVIDIA Reflex and stops in menus, on pause and when the window loses focus.
  • One vendor per session: AMD's and NVIDIA's integrations share the window's swap chain, so the game loads only the runtime of the renderer you choose. The game still starts on Vulkan and loads neither until a Direct3D 12 renderer is chosen; a start that fails goes back to Vulkan.
  • Steadier frame generation: engine submissions that present nothing no longer end DLSS frame generation or count as presented frames.
  • Credits: the Windows package names NVIDIA DLSS on its splash screen, in About and in the end credits, and carries NVIDIA's license terms in licenses/nvidia-streamline/.

Abyssal 1.21.17

Protect fishes missions can be finished again. Since 1.21.9 the guarded school could stop at its first waypoint, so hunters waiting further along its route never came. A hunter could also get stuck flying straight away from its target with its speed bursts, out of reach of any chase.

  • Hunters turn round: a ship whose target lies almost straight behind it now turns across at its normal rate. Before, the steering could hold it on a course directly away from its target. This applies to every computer-controlled ship, so pirates that overshoot also come back sooner.
  • The guarded school swims its whole route and keeps going past the last waypoint, as in the original. In chapter 19 it sets out forward from where it is placed.
  • Species on the map: picking a fish on the map's SPECIES page writes its name and catch weight range under the chart, as the original does, for example Fish swarm (3 t – 5 t).
  • No launch stutter: the loading screen now stays up into the first moments of a dive and fades out once the scene's shaders have compiled. Before, the dive opened with hitches of up to a fifth of a second.
  • Title screen: the station behind the main menu no longer fills the screen with a close-up wall while game content is being prepared or a JAR is imported. The station is shown only once it is complete and framed.

Abyssal 1.21.16

Autopilot flies like the original again. A course change eases onto the new heading in a couple of seconds, slowing as the nose comes round, and keeps the horizon level. Since 1.21.12, turns ran at the hull's own steering rate, starting and stopping abruptly and tilting the view. A slow hull also needed most of ten seconds to turn around, which sent it on wide loops before it reached the station. Hull handling and steering upgrades now govern your own steering only, as in the original.

  • Reconstructed textures: an optional, sharper redraw of hulls, station panels, markings, creatures and effects, with shallow normal-map relief. The game offers it after importing a JAR or on the first start of this version. It can also be switched under Settings → Graphics → Surfaces and textures → Reconstructed textures. It is generated on the device from the imported atlases, with a progress bar and Cancel, and cached per JAR. Turning it off restores the original textures at once.
  • Stations: flying into a station turns the submarine away at the original's gentle rate instead of spinning it round almost instantly.
  • Station lights: the glowing balls that floated beside habitat modules with enhanced graphics are gone; the modules are lit as before.
  • Marine snow is lighter: fewer flakes, a little dimmer, and shorter streaks while cruising.
  • Radio: a conversation between several speakers keeps the water still throughout. Before, the game moved for a frame between one speaker's window and the next.
  • Full hold: a fish carcass or a salvage crate that does not fit now stays in the water, as a live catch does, until there is room. The original used them up.

Abyssal 1.21.15

Golden algae and golden water now look gold. With enhanced graphics, the half-transparent algae had picked up the blue water light and the cyan headlight glow behind them, so a yellow alga read lime. Each alga now keeps its own pigment at the original light level. The regional water tint also keeps the alga's hue at every Water colour strength instead of drifting toward green. The default water strength is unchanged, and Classic graphics keep the original look.

  • Trade: each cargo line shows the station's stock, the price range and the tonnes in your hold, under a single Cargo heading.
  • Sell all and Buy all drop their icons, so large sums fit inside the buttons.
  • The colonists' payment for delivered cargo appears as a radio message, as the pirate bounty does, instead of a line in the station window that pushed Depart down.

Abyssal 1.21.14

Larger replacement textures now use their actual pixel grid when Ship or Station texture smoothing is off. Previously, the renderer snapped them to the original atlas grid, skipping fine detail and making it jump during motion. Magnified details stay crisp; features smaller than a screen pixel receive stable mip and anisotropic filtering. Colour-derived surface relief also avoids turning fine paint grain into unstable shading.

  • Mods → Textures has independent normal-map import, preview and removal for each atlas. Normal maps can be used with original colours and apply immediately.
  • Ship and station previews follow antialiasing changes immediately. Multisample antialiasing adds an optional 8× setting; the default stays 4×.
  • Compatible Sony Ericsson 1.0.2, 1.0.3 and 1.0.8 builds share saves, including saves written by earlier engine releases.
  • Station autopilot docks on entering the docking area instead of taking an unnecessary trip around the station. Chapter 18 keeps its search destination hidden.
  • Cargo lists show price ranges. The title and About identify the supplied JAR's build when available.

The base-texture upscaling experiment is excluded.

Abyssal 1.21.13

Choose a tag to compare

@TheWWWorm TheWWWorm released this 23 Oct 12:43

Abyssal 1.21.13 adds optional normal maps to texture packs, giving painted hull panels and other surfaces shallow relief under Enhanced lighting. Normal maps follow the original atlas layout, including mirrored UVs and animated parts. Existing shading is preserved when no normal map is installed.

Put deep.normal.png beside deep.png, or fx.normal.png beside fx.png, in the textures mod folder and restart the game. Use OpenGL tangent-space normals (+Y toward the top of the image). Opaque texels apply the authored relief; transparent texels retain the relief inferred from colour. Restore original disables the companion with its colour replacement.

The downloads contain the engine, import tools and required runtimes. Texture packs and original game assets are not included; supply a compatible DEEP JAR separately. Existing saves and compatible localized JARs remain supported.

Downloads are available for Linux x86-64, Linux ARM64, Windows, macOS, Web and Android, plus the public source archive. See VALIDATION.md for checks and platform limits, and SHA256SUMS to verify downloads. Android uses version code 85 and the existing release signing certificate.

@TheWWWorm TheWWWorm released this 23 Oct 07:53

Abyssal 1.21.12

Navigation, depth warnings and save transfer improvements.

  • Keyboard map navigation: arrows move the reticle when the map opens. Fire, Enter or A selects an area; directions then choose a station, and Fire confirms the destination. Escape or B returns to moving the reticle.
  • Autopilot: pressing its control disengages immediately. Course changes now follow hull handling and steering upgrades, with gradual leveling after a manual roll.
  • Mission routes: reachable remote destinations use the S.T.R.E.A.M. gate, including routes selected before leaving a station. Local objectives and continuous travel beyond engine range remain available.
  • S.T.R.E.A.M.: cancelling its menu preserves thrust. Fire skips the exit camera and restores cruising speed without firing a shot.
  • Depth markers: Near limits begins appearing four times sooner, with matching visibility through the water. Always retains its existing behavior.
  • Manual roll: turns 50% faster while retaining hull and equipment differences.
  • Save transfer: the main menu's Load game screen offers Import save and Export save even before the first save exists. Import restores the autosave; export lets you select an existing slot.

The OUT gate remains locked during active local encounters, including combat side jobs, matching the original game.

Known issue: intermittent white flashes while firing remain unresolved. They have not reproduced in NVIDIA/Linux testing; this release does not claim a fix for them.

Downloads include Windows, Linux x86-64, Linux ARM64, macOS, Web and Android packages, source and SHA-256 checksums. Supply a compatible DEEP JAR separately; original game content is not included. See VALIDATION.md for platform coverage.

@TheWWWorm TheWWWorm released this 22 Oct 17:25

Range on chart. The map's SPECIES page has a Range on chart picker. Choose a fish you have caught and the chart rings every station where it lives, the most common in the widest ring; Algae shows all five algae at once, and Deselect clears the rings.

Radar pictures. As in the original, a combat radar shows a picture of an enemy's cargo instead of its name, and a fishing radar shows the creature's picture with its weight. A wreck or crate a mission asks you to recover shows the salvage or recovery picture.

Check location. Each offer on the freelance board can open the chart at its destination; Back returns to the board.

Region colour in the side view. On the map's side view, the water above 20000 takes the colour of the selected station's region, the colour of its most common alga, as the sky over it does.

Fixes

  • As in the original, the story turns the ship away from Gosu in the fifth chapter, and from everywhere but Gosu in the sixth.
  • The species page no longer leaves a stale resize handler behind when it closes.

Includes Linux x86-64, Linux ARM64, Windows, macOS Apple Silicon, Web and signed Android packages, the source archive, SHA-256 checksums and platform validation notes. A compatible DEEP JAR is required separately; original game assets and data are not included.
