Backspace 1.10.0

Mentioning @everyone, @here or a role now needs a new permission, Mention @everyone, @here and Roles, which space owners grant per role. These mentions now notify the people they reach, and each space's notification settings can switch them off. The space sidebar shows how many messages are unread in each space and in your direct messages. Members can set a nickname for each space, and a right click on a member in the member list opens a menu with their profile, messages, friend actions, roles, kick and ban. A mention in the message box shows the person's name instead of a code.

Upgrading

  • This release has two database migrations, 0027 and 0028, which run on first start. As before every migration, a database backup is taken first, unless backups are turned off with BACKUP_DISABLED=true. Migration 0027 adds two indexes that the unread counts use, one on channel messages and one on direct messages. Migration 0028 adds the two group mention switches to the notification settings, off for everyone.
  • No existing role gets the new Mention @everyone, @here and Roles permission on upgrade. Until a space owner grants it to a role, only the space owner, instance admins and members whose role has Administrator can send @everyone, @here or a role mention. A member without it who used to type @everyone as plain text now gets a refusal. New roles also start without it (#380).
  • Apps and bots that post through the API get 403 missing_permission for a message with @everyone, @here or a role mention when their account lacks the permission, and nothing is stored. Editing a message is refused only when the edit adds such a mention (#380).
  • Spaces on instances that still run 1.9.x: their @everyone, @here and role mentions are shown but do not notify, the group mention switches cannot be saved there, a nickname change is refused with the reason, and the sidebar shows the unread dot without a count.

Mentions and notifications

  • A new permission, Mention @everyone, @here and Roles, decides who can send @everyone, @here and role mentions. It is in the role editor and in the permissions of text channels and categories, so a channel or category can allow or deny it on its own (#380, thanks @Cirzear).
  • A message with @everyone, @here or a role mention from someone without the permission is not sent. The message box keeps the text and says why. A message that already had such a mention can still be edited, as long as the edit does not add a new one (#380).
  • @everyone, @here and a role you hold now notify you on "mentions only", and the message is highlighted as one that mentions you. @here reaches the same members as @everyone: Backspace has no "online only" audience (#380).
  • The space notification settings have a new Group mentions section with two switches: one for @everyone and @here, one for role mentions. Turned on, these mentions no longer notify you in that space. A mention of you by name always notifies, and the switches do not change "every message", "nothing" or a mute. They apply to the whole space; channels follow it (#380).
  • @everyone, @here and role mentions are shown as mentions in messages and replies. A role mention shows the role's name in its colour, and "Unknown Role" for a role the space does not have (#380).
  • A mention you pick in the message box shows as the person's name, highlighted, instead of a code. Deleting into it removes the whole mention, and the list of people opens next to the @ you typed. Role mentions show the role's name, and @everyone and @here are highlighted while you type. Editing a sent message still shows the codes (#381, #380, thanks @Cirzear).

Unread counts

  • Space icons and the direct messages button in the space sidebar show how many messages are unread, up to 99+. Your own messages are not counted, and neither are channels you cannot read (#382, thanks @Cirzear).
  • The counts follow new and deleted messages, and reading a channel on another device lowers them too. A muted space keeps its count in a quieter colour (#382).
  • Screen readers read the count as a sentence, such as "More than 99 unread messages" (#382).

Members and nicknames

  • A right click on a member in the desktop member list opens a menu: view profile, send a message, the friend action that fits (add, cancel, accept, decline or remove), change the space nickname, a roles submenu, and kick and ban, each after a confirmation. It shows only what you are allowed to do to that member. The menu key or Shift+F10 opens it from the keyboard, and Enter or Space opens the profile (#386, thanks @Cirzear).
  • Members can have a nickname in each space, up to 32 characters. Anyone can set their own. Members with Manage Space can change the nickname of members ranked below them, but not the owner's. An empty field removes the nickname (#386).
  • The nickname shows in the member lists, on messages and replies, in mentions, in the typing line and in the mention list, which also finds people by it. Direct messages, the friends list and the profile keep the account name, and the profile card shows the nickname for the space (#386).

Interface

  • On mobile, the Spaces, DMs and You tabs are translated in every language, and the back button has a translated name for screen readers (#445, thanks @Cirzear).
  • The remove button on a finished attachment in the message box is no longer cut off (#446, thanks @Cirzear).
