Collaboration proposal: merge with smcFanControl Community Edition #59

Description

Hey @TopScrech — great work on FanControl! The SwiftUI interface and Apple Silicon focus are exactly where macOS fan control needs to go.

I maintain the smcFanControl Community Edition, a fork of the original hholtmann/smcFanControl (2,494 stars, upstream dormant since 2023). We've been adding localizations (9 languages merged this week with community contributors already submitting improvements), fixing bugs, and planning a feature roadmap.

The opportunity

Your project has modern Swift/SwiftUI code with broad hardware support. Our fork has brand recognition and community momentum but is stuck in legacy Objective-C on Intel only. Together these complement each other perfectly:

smcFanControl CE Your FanControl
Code Objective-C (legacy) Swift/SwiftUI (modern)
Brand 2,494 stars (upstream) 5 stars (new)
Community Active contributors, 9 localizations Solo dev
Platform Intel only Intel + Apple Silicon
License GPL-2.0 GPL-3.0

Proposal

I'd love to explore combining forces. A few ideas:

  1. Merge your SwiftUI frontend with our community/brand — one project instead of two competing ones
  2. Open-source CoreSMC (or help us integrate iSMC) — the private dependency is the main barrier to collaboration. With it open, the community can contribute to the full stack
  3. Joint roadmap — custom fan curves, multiple profiles, temperature-based automation, the features that made Windows FanControl (19K stars) so popular

Totally understand if CoreSMC needs to stay private for business reasons — in that case we could still collaborate on the UI layer and use iSMC as the open backend.
