v0.1.5-beta - the bot that joined too early
Fixes a silence that had an obvious-looking cause and a completely
different real one.
"The bot's in the channel but nobody can hear anything"
If Inkwyrd joined the voice channel before anyone else was in it, the
music would play, the Monitor button would prove it was playing, and
Discord would get nothing at all. Rejoining didn't help. The only way
through was to be in the voice channel yourself before starting Inkwyrd.
Here's what was actually happening. Discord encrypts voice with a group
key, and it doesn't finish setting that up until there's somebody to
share it with, so a bot that joins an empty channel waits. Inkwyrd knew
that and waited, which is right. What it didn't know is that Discord
ends a call whose channel stays empty, and when it did, Inkwyrd carried
on waiting on a connection that no longer existed. Discord offered it a
fresh connection four times over; nothing was listening.
Inkwyrd now watches its voice connection and rebuilds it whenever it
drops. Join an empty channel, go and make a cup of tea, and when your
players arrive the sound is there. It also covers Discord moving bots
between its own servers mid-session, which it does unannounced and which
had the same effect.
Retries back off and keep going, so there's no window where it gives up
and needs restarting. If you're watching the status line you'll see
"Reconnecting to the voice channel..." rather than silence.
One thing to know: this is the hardest part of the app to test, and
it can only really be proven on a live call. If you see it drop and fail
to come back, the log will say so (Settings -> Open log folder), and
that's worth an issue.
Downloads
Download InkwyrdAudio-Portable-0.1.5-beta.zip, unzip it anywhere, and
run Inkwyrd Audio.exe. Nothing is installed; to remove it, delete the
folder. Everything it needs is inside, including the Microsoft C++
runtime.
Upgrading: unzip over the old folder, or into a new one and delete the
old. Your settings, playlists, scenes, soundboard, track library and
skins live in %APPDATA%\Inkwyrd Audio and aren't touched either way.
About the antivirus warning
Windows will warn you about this download, and Defender may block it.
Briefly: the detections are Microsoft's automatic machine-learning models
(names ending !ml), the program scores 0 or 1 out of about 70 engines
on VirusTotal with no engine naming an actual malware family, and
Microsoft's verdict has flipped between builds of identical source code.
A false-positive report was submitted to Microsoft and rejected, so
this is unresolved rather than cleared. If Defender blocks it, please
don't override the block. Open an issue instead. The full reasoning is
in the
README.
