Choose a tag to compare

@TuxOfValhalla TuxOfValhalla released this 30 Sep 13:00

Slacky-Update v1.0_RC2 (Build 26) — "Dark Star" (Stability & Hardware Release Candidate)

"Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes. Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis. Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion..." — Grateful Dead / Robert Hunter (1968)

Slacky-Update v1.0_RC2 (Build 26) — codenamed "Dark Star" in honor of Patrick Volkerding and the legendary Slackware hostname — delivers essential stability hardening, terminal stream normalization, and hardware-tier enhancements discovered during field validation of v1.0_RC1. It introduces flicker-free VT100/CSI/DEC terminal normalizers for slackpkg and wget scrollback retention, dynamic hardware-adaptive Hyprland Lua environments, strict multilib version intersection checks, CachyOS Zen 4/5 microarchitecture repository alignment, intelligent 404 self-healing synchronization, an authentic 10-line parallel ILoveCandy download engine, universal deep runtime library auto-discovery (GHC Haskell, Lua, Python), Typst/Pandoc label alignment, and clean terminal interrupt handling across KDE Plasma Wayland and Hyprland.

🌟 Major Highlights of v1.0_RC2

1. 🍭 Authentic 10-Line Parallel ILoveCandy Download Engine (lib/gnomes_pacman.py)

  • 10-Slot Concurrent Animation: Restored up to 10 parallel download slots, each displaying dedicated live telemetry: truncated filename, size, speed, ETA, and animated Slackware Bold Blue S/s chomp eating stationary pellets.
  • Elimination of Green Checkmarks (✓): Completely removed all non-standard green checkmarks and ad-hoc log noise. Completed downloads are permanently committed to terminal history in clean, canonical Pacman layout: [Filnavn] [Størrelse] [Hastighet] 00:00 [----------------------------] 100%.
  • Locked Total Progress Bar: Keeps aggregate progress, total speed, and overall ILoveCandy bar dynamically pinned at the bottom row without tearing or scrollback corruption in Konsole and zsh.

2. ⚡ Deep Nested Runtime Library Auto-Discovery (lib/gnomes_pacman.py)

  • Universal Deep Library Search: Launcher wrappers now automatically scan and append deeply nested language runtime library folders (${APP_ROOT}/lib/ghc-*/lib/*, ${APP_ROOT}/lib/lua/*, /opt/underpants/runtime/lib/ghc-*/lib/*) to LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
  • Zero Runtime Library Failures: Applications packaged with complex runtimes (e.g., pandoc-cli with GHC Haskell 9.6 and Lua 5.4) resolve all internal .so dependencies out-of-the-box without requiring manual library path workarounds.

3. ⚡ CachyOS Zen 4/5 Hardware Alignment & Self-Healing Index (lib/gnomes_pacman.py)

  • Zen 4/5 Repository Path Alignment: Fixed mirror URL resolution for znver4 tier repositories to match CachyOS's server directory structure (x86_64_v4/cachyos-*-znver4), restoring full access to AVX-512 optimized binaries and kernels without 404 errors.
  • 404 Self-Healing Short-Circuit: When an upstream mirror bumps a package revision (e.g. Arch Haskell rebuilds), Gnomes immediately short-circuits futile retry passes and runs an auto-sync pass against upstream repository databases to seamlessly fetch new revisions.
  • Graceful Interrupts: Handled KeyboardInterrupt cleanly so pressing Ctrl+C restores the terminal cursor (\033[?25h) and exits without printing Python stack traces.

4. 🖥️ Hardware-Adaptive Hyprland Lua Milieu & Tearing Rules (lib/mod_gaming.sh)

  • Dynamic GPU Detection: Automatically configures ~/.config/hypr/modules/env.lua and /etc/hypr/hyprland.env based on probed hardware (NVIDIA direct scanout, AMD RadeonSI, Intel iHD, or PRIME hybrid offload).
  • Gaming Tearing Profiles: Introduces non-intrusive immediate = true tearing rules for low-latency gaming under Wine, Proton, Battle.net, and native Vulkan/OpenGL titles.

5. 🧩 Multilib Version Intersection Engine (lib/mod_gaming.sh)

  • Elimination of Mismatched Updates: Multi-architecture companion packages (gamescope, mangohud, gamemode, obs-vkcapture, yabridge) now perform an atomic version intersection check. Upgrades are only triggered when both 64-bit and 32-bit packages are synchronously available on upstream mirrors, preventing broken multilib states.

6. VARIOUS BUG FIXES

📦 Build & Upgrade Instructions

V1.0 'Wonderwall'

Choose a tag to compare

@TuxOfValhalla TuxOfValhalla released this 27 Sep 16:35

Slacky-Update v1.0_RC1 (Build 2) — "Wonderwall" (Master Dress Rehearsal)

"Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you. By now you should've somehow realized what you gotta do." — Oasis (1995)

Slacky-Update v1.0_RC1 (Build 2) is the definitive Master Dress Rehearsal and general testing release candidate on the road to Slacky-Update 1.0 LTS. It delivers comprehensive system hardening, universal multi-GPU & hybrid laptop (Intel/AMD + NVIDIA PRIME) detection, unprivileged privilege-minimization, resilient network timeout management, seamless Underpants Gnomes batch upgrades, and relaxed background footprint.

🌟 Major Highlights of v1.0_RC1 ("Wonderwall")

1. 🩲 Fixed Underpants Gnomes Batch Upgrades (lib/mod_gaming.sh)

  • Structured Fast-Check Output: Resolved an upstream version-parsing mismatch in check_all_installed_gaming_updates_fast and sync_all_installed_cachyos_gaming_packages. Package IDs (microsoft-edge, obs-studio, etc.) are cleanly resolved and dispatched to the batch transmutation pipeline without being skipped.

2. 🛡️ Privilege Minimization & Non-Blocking Unprivileged Operations

  • Zero Sudo Prompts in Read-Only Mode: Navigating the Limine Bootloader menu (manage_limine_interactive), querying system status, or launching background checkers runs 100% unprivileged. sudo is strictly deferred until a user explicitly chooses a modifying action (Install, Regenerate, CMDLINE Hub, or Restore).
  • Non-Blocking Cache Management: init_storage() uses silent sudo -n for non-interactive cache initialization and falls back cleanly to ~/.cache/slacky-update/ without interrupting user workflows.

3. 🎮 Clean Menu Typography & Sober Slackware Headers

  • No Double-Numbering: Corrected hardcoded numbers in NVIDIA submenus across 24 languages (locales/*.json).
  • Sober Slackware Blue Design: Stripped distracting ASCII emojis and symbols from core system menus and headers, adopting a mature, solid Slackware-blue presentation. All 90s humor and playful culture remain cleanly contained within the Underpants Gnomes sidecar.
  • Target Distribution Alignment: Synchronized all menus and field guides to strictly target Slackware -current / 15+ & 16 Alpha.

4. 💻 Universal Multi-GPU & Hybrid Laptop Architecture (PRIME Offload)

  • DMI & Chassis Detection: Automatically detects mobile and laptop chassis via /sys/class/dmi/id/chassis_type and /sys/class/power_supply/BAT*.
  • Hybrid GPU Differentiation: When multi-GPU setups or hybrid laptops (e.g. Intel UHD/Iris or AMD Radeon iGPU + NVIDIA GeForce RTX dGPU) are detected:
    • Hyprland/Wayland session generators (/etc/hypr/hyprland.env and /usr/bin/start-hyprland) no longer force GBM_BACKEND=nvidia-drm globally, allowing the Wayland compositor to render smoothly on the primary display iGPU (/dev/dri/card0).
    • Seamless PRIME offloading (__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1, DRI_PRIME=1, __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia) is configured for 3D games and heavy GPU workstations.
    • Desktop video acceleration (LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME) is automatically routed to the low-power iGPU (iHD for Intel, radeonsi for AMD).
  • Single-GPU Desktop Parity: Dedicated NVIDIA desktop workstations continue to utilize direct modesetting (GBM_BACKEND=nvidia-drm, LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia, NVD_BACKEND=direct).

5. 🌐 Resilient Network Architecture & Large File Safety

  • Elimination of Premature Download Timeouts: Removed rigid time bounds (such as -m 180 / -m 120) that could abort large kernel suites, NVIDIA driver installers, or multilib packages on slow connections.
  • Speed-Limit & Connection Guardrails: Replaced hard timeouts with intelligent --connect-timeout 10 --speed-limit 1024 --speed-time 25 flags across all download pipelines.

6. 🔋 Background Footprint & Battery Optimization

  • Relaxed Polling Interval: Adjusted the tray fallback polling interval from 15s to 60s in slacky-update-tray, reducing CPU wakeups and conserving battery on laptops.

Slacky-Update v0.12.2: Hardened UEFI Secure Boot & Cryptographic Integrity Matrix

Slacky-Update v0.12.2 delivers a major hardening milestone for Slackware 15.0 and -current systems running modern CachyOS Linux kernels, NVIDIA drivers, and dual UEFI bootloaders (Limine & GRUB/Shim).

This release eliminates race conditions and signing order ambiguities in UEFI Secure Boot, locks down BLAKE2B integrity verification in Limine, fixes GRUB default kernel selection under restricted permissions, and enforces strict pre-release package filtering.

🔒 Critical Fix: Resolved Limine BLAKE2B Hash Mismatch with sbctl

Background & Root Cause

In prior releases, an edge case could occur during kernel updates or bootloader synchronization where a Linux kernel binary (/boot/vmlinuz-*) was signed by sbctl after its cryptographic BLAKE2B checksum had already been calculated and written to /boot/limine.conf.

Because PE Authenticode signing appends and embeds signature certificates into the binary image on disk, the post-enrollment signature inevitably changed the file's hash. When booting with UEFI Secure Boot enabled, Limine's hardware verification engine detected that the binary on disk did not match the enrolled checksum, halting execution with a Verification Failed security halt. Users were forced to enter UEFI BIOS Setup and temporarily disable Secure Boot in order to boot into the OS.

The Fix: Strictly Serialized 4-Phase Cryptographic Pipeline

The bootloader synchronization and Secure Boot enforcement workflow is now strictly ordered and deterministically phased:

  1. Phase 1: Pre-Signing (MOK & sbctl):
All kernel images (/boot/vmlinuz-*) and out-of-tree NVIDIA kernel modules are cryptographically signed first. sign_kernel_images verifies active MOK signatures, and sign_kernel_binaries_sbctl registers and signs all kernels directly against the motherboard's UEFI NVRAM database.
  2. Phase 2: Strict Database Pruning:
/var/lib/sbctl/files.json is automatically pruned via an enforced whitelist. Obsolete, deleted, or foreign binaries are stripped out, eliminating phantom does not exist or incorrect digest errors.
  3. Phase 3: Limine BLAKE2B Matrix Generation:
Only after kernels are fully signed and finalized on disk does generate_limine_configuration read the binaries and compute the clean BLAKE2B hashes for /boot/limine.conf.
  4. Phase 4: Limine Bootloader Sealing:
limine enroll-config embeds the configuration checksum into the Limine EFI executable, and sign_limine_efi_sbctl signs only limine_x64.efi and fallback BOOTX64.EFI. The redundant and risky sbctl sign-all call has been completely removed from this phase, guaranteeing that kernel files on disk are never altered after hash enrollment.

🛡️ Total Protection for Microsoft-Signed Shim & GRUB Coexistence

  • Zero Tampering with Official Bootloaders:
sbctl and MOK are strictly prohibited from attempting to re-sign Microsoft-signed or distro-provided bootloader binaries (shimx64.efi, grubx64.efi, and mmx64.efi).
  • Purged Dangerous Legacy Post-Hook Template:
Removed an obsolete hook template in lib/mod_limine.sh that historically attempted to invoke sbctl sign on Shim and GRUB after Limine enrollment. Replaced with a clean, standard symlink (/usr/bin/limine-enroll-config -> /etc/boot/hooks/post.d/90-limine-enroll-config).
  • Fallback Shim Protection:
Before /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI is signed by sbctl, its binary payload is inspected (strings verification). If the file is an existing Microsoft-signed Shim rather than Limine, sbctl bypasses it to preserve Authenticode integrity.

🐧 GRUB Smart Top-Level Priority & Permission Fix

  • Privileged Inspection under Restricted /boot Permissions:
On systems where /boot is mounted with strict permissions (umask=0077 / mode 0700), unprivileged helper processes previously failed to inspect directory listings, preventing set_grub_smart_default_priority from ranking newly installed kernels.
  • Seamless Automatic Defaulting:
Kernel ranking now runs through privileged inspection (sudo python3), guaranteeing that GRUB_TOP_LEVEL in /etc/default/grub and /boot/grub/grub.cfg always automatically selects the newest, highest-ranked kernel (e.g., CachyOS BORE) as default entry without requiring manual intervention.

🌲 Enhanced Btrfs Snapshot & Recovery Matrix

  • 3-Tier Snapshot Boot Resilience:
Updated the Limine snapshot engine and recovery menu generation to enforce a standardized 3-tier kernel fallback hierarchy for both standard boot and Btrfs Snapper snapshots:
    • Tier 1 (Primary): Linux Cachyos BORE (or latest active high-performance kernel).
    • Tier 2 (Stability Fallback): Linux Cachyos LTS (if installed).
    • Tier 3 (Stock Fallback): Slackware Linux Stock/Generic kernel (if installed).

🧙 Curated Package Suite & Pre-Release Filtering

  • Shielded End-User Experience:
Enabled pre-release filtering (filter_untested=true) across both package managers to hide experimental upstream entries until fully tested on Slackware:
    • Underpants Gnomes (Gaming Suite): Exclusively exposes the 22 verified packages (MangoHud, GameMode, GOverlay, dmemcg, Sched-EXT, Ananicy-CPP, Heroic, Lutris, Faugus, ProtonPlus, Steam Devices, LACT, OpenRGB, EasyEffects, Pear Desktop, Audacity, Inkscape, Syncthing, OBS Studio, Discord, Chrome, Edge). 17 untested packages are safely hidden.
    • Curated SlackBuilds Hub: Exclusively exposes the 18 verified SlackBuild suites. 9 unverified packages are hidden.
  • Localization Sync:
Updated menu labels across all 22 localized language files (locales/*.json) from "25 packages" to "18 packages".

Verification & Integrity Summary

  • All shell modules validated syntax-clean with bash -n.
  • Verified identical BLAKE2B disk hashes between /boot/vmlinuz-* and /boot/limine.conf.
  • Verified 100% preservation of official Slackware kernel-headers.
  • Confirmed clean dual-booting with Secure Boot enabled across both Limine and GRUB/Shim.
