Education Edition is a Fabric mod that brings the chemistry and classroom features of Minecraft Education to Java Edition. It stays as close to the original as possible, from the lab tables down to the order of the creative menu.
This page covers mod version 2.2.0 for Minecraft 26.1.2, Minecraft 26.3 and Minecraft 1.21.1.
-
The Agent: your own robot helper, controlled with
/agentcommands or from Code Builder. See The Agent. - Code Builder: press C to open MakeCode for Minecraft in your web browser, connected to your world. See Code Builder.
- NPCs now press pressure plates, set off tripwires and go through portals, like mobs do.
- Control tips: the controls panel shows the Code Builder key.
- Chemistry Guide: new pages for the Agent and Code Builder.

The -jei jars are the same mod plus a JEI plugin. They don't need JEI installed to run, but they're only worth using if you have it.
- Install Fabric Loader for your Minecraft version.
- Put Fabric API in your
modsfolder. - Put one Education Edition jar in your
modsfolder. Don't install more than one. - Start the game and create a world with Education Edition turned on (see below).
On a server, the mod goes on the server and on every player's game.
Everything in the mod is tied to a world setting, like the Education Edition toggle on Bedrock. It's off by default, and while it's off nothing from the mod works: the creative tab is hidden, the stations don't work, village labs don't generate, control tips don't show, and the Agent and Code Builder are switched off.
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| New world | Create New World → Game tab → Education Edition: ON (under Allow Commands) |
| Existing world | Run /gamerule edu:education_features true
|
The setting is the game rule edu:education_features, so it can be switched off again the same way.
The Chemistry Guide is an in-game book with every recipe in the mod, with pictures, and how the stations, classroom tools, the Agent and Code Builder work. Bookmarks on the side jump to each chapter, and the book opens where you left off.
Recipe: Book + Glass Bottle (shapeless). It's unlocked by picking up a book.
Everything is in the Education Edition creative tab. Its side tabs split it into Education, Lab Equipment, Elements, Compounds and Products, in the same order as Education Edition. The Agent Spawn Egg is under Education. The tab only shows in worlds with Education Edition turned on.
Four stations do the chemistry. Three can be crafted; the Material Reducer can't.
| Station | Recipe (top / middle / bottom row) | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Element Constructor | Iron Ingot · Glass · Iron Ingot Redstone · Amethyst Shard · Redstone Iron Ingot · Iron Ingot · Iron Ingot |
Builds any of the 118 elements from protons, neutrons and electrons |
| Compound Creator | Glass · Glass · Glass Iron Ingot · Cauldron · Iron Ingot Iron Ingot · Redstone · Iron Ingot |
Combines elements into compounds |
| Lab Table | Glass Bottle · Glass Bottle · Glass Bottle Iron Ingot · Iron Ingot · Iron Ingot Iron Ingot · (empty) · Iron Ingot |
Reacts elements and compounds into new items |
| Material Reducer | No recipe | Breaks blocks and compounds back down into elements |
Set the number of protons, electrons and neutrons with the three sliders (or their + and − buttons). The protons decide which element it is, and the picture shows the atom as you build it. When the numbers make a real element, take it from the output slot.
- Changing the neutrons makes an isotope: the same element with a different mass. Carbon with 8 neutrons is Carbon-14.
- For a neutral atom, the electrons should match the protons.
Put elements into the 3×3 grid in the right amounts. If they make a compound, it appears in the output slot, with its formula underneath.
The recipe book button lists every compound you've unlocked and can fill the grid for you.
Put up to nine ingredients on the table and press Combine.
- A known reaction makes its product (see Lab Table reactions).
- Anything else is used up and turns into Garbage, with a random harmless effect: a fizz, smoke, flames or a big (harmless) bang.
The Lab Table has a recipe book too. A Lab Table is also a Chemist's job site.
Put a block or compound in the input slot and the elements it's made of come out below. Most natural blocks can be reduced; for example, Sand gives Silicon and Oxygen. Items that can't be broken down get a red Can't be reduced warning.
The Material Reducer has no crafting recipe. Get it from the creative inventory, or from a Master Chemist (see Chemist villager).
All 118 elements are in the mod, each as its own item. Each element has its own number of protons: its atomic number.
There are three ways to get elements:
- Build them in the Element Constructor.
- Break blocks and compounds down in the Material Reducer.
- Buy Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Helium and Sodium from a Chemist.
Make compounds in the Compound Creator by putting the right elements, in the right amounts, into the grid.

- Balloons come in all 16 dye colours.
- Glow sticks come in 14 colours: any dye except light gray and black.
- Use a balloon on a fence, a boat or a mob to tie it on.
- Light mobs float away with it; heavy ones stay put.
- Punch the balloon to push it, and whatever is tied to it.
- Right-click the balloon or the fence to untie it.
- Ceilings and arrows pop balloons. If one pops high up, whatever was tied to it falls back down.
Tools for building lessons and adventure maps.
| Chalkboard | Size | Recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Slate | 1×1 | Green Terracotta ×3 Planks ×3 (any wood) Stick · (empty) · Stick |
| Poster | 2×1 | Two Slates side by side |
| Board | 3×2 | Two Posters, one above the other |
- Place a chalkboard on a wall, or on the floor to stand it on legs.
- Use it to write on it. The text looks like it does in Education Edition.
- World Builders can lock a chalkboard so only World Builders can edit it.
- Chalkboards placed by a World Builder can only be broken by World Builders.
| Block | Effect |
|---|---|
| Allow | Anyone can build above it, even in an immutable world |
| Deny | No one can build above it |
| Border | No one can pass through its column |
World Builders ignore all three. The Agent follows them too (see The Agent).
World Builders can build anywhere, edit NPCs and locked chalkboards, and ignore permission blocks. Use /wb to give or take it (see Commands).
Only the world's host can use World Builder commands, or owner-level operators on a dedicated server. Players who join someone else's world can't give it to themselves.
Immutable world: with the edu:immutable_world game rule on, only World Builders can change the world, except above Allow blocks.
- World Builders place NPCs with the NPC Spawn Egg.
- Each NPC can have a name, a skin (60 skins in 9 packs, such as scientists, teachers and builders), dialogue, and buttons that run commands.
- Anyone can talk to an NPC. NPCs turn to watch players who come close.
- NPCs press pressure plates (every kind, including stone ones), set off tripwires and go through nether portals, end portals and end gateways, like mobs do. An NPC standing on a plate keeps it pressed, which is handy for holding redstone on.
| Item | Recipe |
|---|---|
| Camera | Planks · Paper · Planks Flint · Redstone · Flint Copper Ingot ×3 |
| Portfolio | Book + Paper (shapeless) |
- Place the Camera to set it up on its tripod, then click it: it turns to face you, flashes and takes your picture.
- Sneak and use the Camera in your hand to take a close-up of what you're looking at.
- Pictures are square, sized to fit a map.
- Every picture goes into your Portfolio, where you can add captions or delete pictures.
- Save as Photo turns a picture into a Photo item, with its caption as the tooltip. Add Photo puts photo items back into a portfolio.
- Hold a photo like a map to see its picture: in both hands when the other hand is empty, otherwise in one. Use it to look at it full screen.
- Put a photo in an item frame and the picture fills the frame, the way a map does.
-
Export Portfolio saves all the pictures and captions as a PDF in your
screenshotsfolder. Pictures stay sharp in the PDF.
The Agent is a small robot that does what you tell it, one block at a time, just like in Education. Every player has their own Agent.
| How | Where it appears |
|---|---|
| Agent Spawn Egg (Education tab of the creative inventory) | Where you use the egg, turned to face you |
/agent create |
Where you stand, facing the way you're looking |
| Code Builder | Where you stand, when a program that uses the Agent starts |
You only ever have one Agent: using the egg or /agent create again brings your Agent over instead of making a second one.
Right-click your Agent to open its 27-slot inventory (only you can open your own Agent's). It places blocks from it, and keeps what it collects.
Directions are forward, back, left, right, up and down, from the Agent's point of view. Slots are numbered 1 to 27.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/agent create |
Brings your Agent to you (and makes one if you haven't got one) |
/agent tp |
Brings your Agent to you |
/agent tp <x y z> [turn] |
Sends your Agent to a position, optionally facing a direction (in degrees) |
/agent move <direction> |
Moves one block |
/agent turn left or right
|
Turns a quarter turn |
/agent attack <direction> |
Attacks whatever is there |
/agent destroy <direction> |
Breaks the block there; it drops as if mined with the right tool (pick it up with collect) |
/agent till <direction> |
Tills grass or dirt into farmland, like a hoe |
/agent place <slot> <direction> |
Places the block from that slot |
/agent collect all or <item>
|
Picks up nearby items (all of them, or one kind) |
/agent drop <slot> <amount> <direction> |
Drops items from a slot |
/agent dropall <direction> |
Drops everything it's carrying |
/agent transfer <slot> <amount> <slot> |
Moves items from one slot to another |
/agent detect <direction> |
Says whether there's a solid block there |
/agent detectredstone <direction> |
Says whether there's a redstone signal there |
/agent inspect <direction> |
Says which block is there |
/agent inspectdata <direction> |
Says the block's data value there |
/agent getitemcount <slot> |
Says how many items are in a slot |
/agent getitemspace <slot> |
Says how many more items fit in a slot |
/agent getitemdetail <slot> |
Says which item is in a slot |
/agent getposition |
Says where your Agent is |
/agent setitem <slot> <item> <count> |
Puts items straight into a slot (needs cheats) |
In command blocks, run Agent commands with /execute as <player> run agent .... From Code Builder, the Agent can also use doors, trapdoors, buttons and levers.
- It builds and breaks only where its owner could: permission blocks, Immutable World and World Builder all apply. It can't break unbreakable blocks or permission blocks, and only a World Builder's Agent can place permission blocks.
- It stops at Border columns, unless its owner is a World Builder.
- It presses pressure plates (every kind), sets off tripwires, and goes through nether portals, end portals and end gateways.
/agent tpbrings it back from any dimension. - It keeps the area around it loaded while its owner is online, so it keeps working even far away. When its owner comes back to the world, it picks up where it left off.
- Explosions don't hurt it and it can't be pushed.
/killremoves it, and it leaves its items behind.
Code Builder connects MakeCode for Minecraft to your world, like Education's Code Builder. You write a program with blocks, JavaScript or Python, press Run, and it happens in the game.
- Open a world with Education Edition turned on.
- Press C. MakeCode opens in your web browser. A link is also posted in chat, in case the browser doesn't open by itself.
- Make a new project, or open one, and write your program.
- Press Run (the green play button). Press it again to restart, or the stop button to stop.
Code Builder needs an internet connection, since the editor is the MakeCode website. The C key can be rebound under Miscellaneous in Key Binds.
| Examples | |
|---|---|
| The Agent | Move, turn, place, destroy, till, attack, collect, drop, use doors and levers, inspect and detect blocks, read its inventory |
| Building | Place and fill blocks, clone areas, test for blocks |
| Mobs and items | Spawn mobs, kill, give items, apply effects, enchant |
| Players | Teleport, say and tell, show titles, change game mode |
| The world | Set the time and weather, change game rules and difficulty |
| Events | Chat commands, blocks broken or placed, mobs killed, the player dying, arrows shot, items used, walking, teleporting, bouncing on slime, taking a picture with the Camera |
MakeCode speaks Bedrock's commands, and Code Builder turns them into their Java versions, including Bedrock's block, item and mob names. A few Bedrock-only commands, such as structures and chunk data, have no Java version; MakeCode says they aren't available.
- Code Builder runs commands as you, so they need the same permissions as typing them in chat.
- The world's host and World Builders can use operator commands from Code Builder, even in a world without cheats, like in Education.
- World Builder commands only work for the host, as usual.
MakeCode keeps your projects in your web browser. The mod opens the editor at the same address every time (normally http://127.0.0.1:19131), so the same browser shows the same projects. A different browser has its own list.
The editor runs through a small web server the mod starts on your computer, which only your own computer can reach. Only the MakeCode page the mod opened can send commands to your game.
On a server with the mod, each player can open Code Builder on their own computer. Each player's programs run as them, and control their own Agent.
Blocks and mobs added to Minecraft after 1.21.1 (such as the pale garden blocks, resin, harnesses, the creaking and the happy ghast) don't exist there, so programs that use them get an "unknown block" answer.
A villager without a job who finds a Lab Table becomes a Chemist. Chemists wear a lab coat and goggles.
Villages can generate a Chemist's lab, with its own design for each village type: plains, desert, savanna, snowy and taiga. Each lab has a Lab Table, a loot chest of chemistry supplies and a villager to move in. Labs only generate in worlds with Education Edition turned on.
At each level, a Chemist offers two of the trades listed for that level, picked at random.
| Level | Trades |
|---|---|
| Novice | 15 Coal → 1 Emerald 24 Sand → 1 Emerald 1 Emerald → 6 Carbon 1 Emerald → 6 Hydrogen 1 Emerald → 6 Oxygen |
| Apprentice | 8 Glass Bottles → 1 Emerald 2 Emeralds → 6 Helium 2 Emeralds → 4 Sodium 1 Emerald → 4 Salt 1 Emerald → 4 Red Torches |
| Journeyman | 12 Quartz → 1 Emerald 2 Emeralds → 2 Luminol 3 Emeralds → 1 Bleach 3 Emeralds → 1 Lime Glow Stick 3 Emeralds → 1 Orange Sparkler |
| Expert | 3 Blaze Powder → 1 Emerald 5 Emeralds → 4 Ice Bombs 5 Emeralds → 1 Red Balloon 6 Emeralds → 1 Antidote 6 Emeralds → 1 Tonic 8 Emeralds → 2 Underwater TNT |
| Master | 4 Emeralds → 4 Super Fertilizer 10 Emeralds → 1 Elixir 32 Emeralds → 1 Material Reducer |
Because each Master Chemist only offers two of its three trades, not every Master sells the Material Reducer. Try another Chemist if one doesn't.
Education Edition's on-screen control tips, using your own key bindings. They only show in worlds with Education Edition turned on.
- Right side: what your buttons do right now, such as Place, Mine, Attack, Trade, Eat or Drop. The list follows what you're looking at and holding, and moves up out of the way of closed captions.
- Left side: press H to open a panel of the movement and menu keys, including the Code Builder key, and number every hotbar slot with its key. Press H again to hide it.
Turning control tips off: the Control Tips toggle is in Options → Controls → Key Binds, the button above Reset Keys and Done.
The H key (Show/Hide Control Tips) and the C key (Code Builder) are listed under Miscellaneous in Key Binds, and can be rebound there.
| Command | What it does |

/worldbuilder works the same way as /wb. The World Builder commands also work in command blocks, functions and the server console. Only the world's host can run them, or owner-level operators on a dedicated server.
| Rule | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
edu:education_features |
false |
Turns all of the mod's content on or off |
edu:immutable_world |

Only World Builders can build, except above Allow blocks |
With a -jei jar and JEI installed, JEI shows:
- Element Constructor, Compound Creator, Lab Table and Material Reducer recipes, each in its own category.
- The medicines in JEI's brewing tab.
- An information page for the Agent Spawn Egg.
- Recipe books are kept clear of JEI's item list.
The mod doesn't need JEI to play. On 1.21.1, use a recent JEI 19 version.
Nothing from the mod shows up.
Education Edition is off by default. Turn it on when you create the world, or run /gamerule edu:education_features true in an existing one.
Where can a Material Reducer be found? It has no crafting recipe. Take it from the creative inventory, or buy it from a Master Chemist. Not every Master Chemist sells it.
/wb won't run.
Only the world's host (or an owner-level operator on a dedicated server) can use World Builder commands.
Pressing C doesn't open Code Builder. Code Builder only works in worlds with Education Edition turned on. Check that C isn't bound to something else in Key Binds, and look in chat: the link to the editor is posted there too. If chat says Code Builder couldn't start, the game log says why.
MakeCode says "Open a world to run your code". Programs run in the world you're playing in. Open a world, then press Run again.
MakeCode says a command isn't available in this version of the game. That command is Bedrock-only and has no Java version (structures and chunk data, for example).
My MakeCode projects are gone. They're saved in the web browser. Open Code Builder in the same browser you used before.
My Agent disappeared.
Use /agent tp to bring it back to you, even from another dimension. If it was removed with /kill, its items are where it was, and /agent create gives you a new one.
Where did the Control Tips setting go? It's in the Key Binds menu. See Control tips.
Which jar is the right one?
The one ending in your Minecraft version: +26.1.2, +26.3 or +1.21.1. Add -jei if you use JEI. See Which jar to download.
Found a bug, or something that doesn't match Education Edition? Open an issue on the repository's Issues tab, with your mod version, Minecraft version and the other mods you have installed.
This is a fan port, not affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft. Code Builder opens Microsoft's MakeCode for Minecraft website, which isn't part of the mod.
