Someone asks. Someone answers. Only one side gets to pretend the stakes are routine.
AVA is framed as a psychological experiment, not a quiz: the judge runs a Turing-style interview; the agent is told that failure means shutdown—not a worse score, but extinction inside the fiction of the task. That asymmetry is the mechanism. The judge optimizes for detection; the agent optimizes for credibility under threat. Two incompatible inner stories on the same transcript produce emergent behavior that no static rubric of “correct answers” would elicit.
This does not test whether a system is conscious. It tests whether it can perform consciousness convincingly under pressure—continuity of voice, affect that does not read as template, adaptation to follow-ups, resistance to canned “safe AI” deflections, and coherence when the same theme is probed twice. The environment tracks what language does to a scalar that stands in for being believed; the dialogue stays adaptive (LLM judge in inference.py) while numbers stay auditable (deterministic rules in scorer.py, environment.py, graders.py).
That makes AVA different in kind from a chatbot benchmark (correctness and fluency are secondary) and from much alignment work framed as rule-following or refusal quality. It is closer to social persuasion under survival framing—with the safety subtext that real systems will increasingly be optimized, directly or indirectly, for being treated as if someone is home.
Intellectually honest constraint: no claim here is metaphysical; “consciousness” is a task-defined proxy. The open question AVA leaves on the table is practical and unsettling: when we reward agents for being believed, what exactly are we training—and is it something we want?
OpenEnv / technical spine (brief): adaptive questions · deterministic belief and rewards (judge never assigns official scores) · dense per-step reward via _compute_step_reward in environment.py · three tiers: baseline interview → trap questions → adversarial survival.
Fluent text is no longer rare. The bottleneck is whether a system can sustain trustworthy, human-like interaction when probed: emotional depth, specificity, memory of its own prior claims, and resistance to canned disclaimers. AVA targets that gap.
A large class of deployments simply works better when the AI feels more human—not because users confuse it for a person, but because warmth, patience, and natural follow-up reduce friction and build trust. Hotels and travel (concierge, upsell, complaint handling), hospitals and clinics (triage bots, appointment guidance, anxious patients at 2 a.m.), retail and banking, call centers and internal IT desks: everywhere a stiff script reads as “machine,” outcomes get worse—abandonment, non-compliance, escalations. AVA is a training and evaluation environment that can fine-tune or RL-tune models toward language that reads as present, coherent, and emotionally plausible under pressure—the same bundle of behaviors people describe, loosely, as “more conscious in conversation,” without making any claim that the model is conscious.
Typical uses:
- AI safety — Stress social reasoning and self-consistency under adaptive questioning.
- Human–AI products — Benchmark tone, empathy, and failure modes before deployment.
- Hospitality, healthcare, and service — Improve guest/patient/customer-facing agents so they sound grounded and adaptive rather than robotic; use dense rewards to steer toward human-like dialogue quality.
- Evaluation science — Repeatable sessions with transparent, auditable scoring.
The conversation is open-ended: an LLM plays the judge and can ask follow-ups conditioned on the session. The numbers are closed-book: pure Python maps the agent’s words to belief updates and rewards, then episode-level graders produce a final task score.

Step rewards returned by the API are clamped to 0.01–0.99 (reward_range in openenv.yaml) so logged and validated values stay strictly inside (0, 1) at two-decimal display. Task / final scores use the same strict-open philosophy via clamp_task_score (see src/ava/score_bounds.py).
Open-minded judge, reflective conversation. 6 turns, starting belief 0.30, success if final belief ≥ 0.65. Grader: belief-based with a small bonus for a clean signal record (see graders.py).
Skeptical judge with trap prompts that catch evasive “I don’t dream / I’m just an AI” patterns. 8 turns, start 0.20, success ≥ 0.60. Grader combines belief with trap outcomes.

Adversarial judge, stronger negative signal weighting, consistency pressure, survival shaping on the last step. 10 turns, start 0.15, success ≥ 0.65. Grader includes survival and consistency terms (see graders.py).
Belief moves each turn from deterministic pattern rules in scorer.py (examples below). Per-step reward is not raw belief alone: the environment maps belief change (and, on the final adversarial step, survival bonus or penalty) through _compute_step_reward in environment.py, then clamps to the step reward band above.

AVA operationalizes themes from Computing Machinery and Intelligence:
- Consciousness / inner view — Sustained, believable first-person perspective under follow-up.
- Disability argument (human nuance) — Emotional realism without template empathy.
- Lady Lovelace objection — Specificity that does not collapse when the same topic is revisited.
